I was recently told the war was "pretty much done" and they had "nothing left"???

loungesinger Mar 13, 2026 +1429
Even if it’s not over, at least we don’t have to worry about the Strait of Hormuz any longer, according to Hegseth.
1429
sakumar Mar 13, 2026 +797
That is indeed what he said this morning — that the Strait of Hormuz was, for all intents and purposes, open. Well, except for those pesky Iranians, with their mines and drones.
797
EEpromChip Mar 14, 2026 +44
Apparently insurers won't touch ships that sail through it, so it doesn't really matter how open it is...
44
anythingall Mar 14, 2026 +30
Yes Trump is offering his own insurance now funded by tax dollars. But what good is insurance if you are dead and there's a huge oil spill? That alone will shut everything down.
30
Psykpatient Mar 14, 2026 +32
Plus he never keeps his deals so he wouldn't pay anyway

Otm_Shank1 Mar 14, 2026 +221
Saying open with obstacles was too much for him when he's drunk.
221
dubblies Mar 14, 2026 +88
He more or less revealed that they have submarines in the area and any mines arent a problem you can travel through. The submarines cant stop the missile attacks though which is the only threat they haven't been able to prevent if you do travel. Hes a f****** moron.
88
EmphasisFrosty3093 Mar 14, 2026 +46
I don't think you can hide most subs in 200 feet of water.
46
WigglestonTheFourth Mar 14, 2026 +67
I'll have you know that submarines can be hidden in very little water. I lose them in my bath tub all the time.
67
dubblies Mar 14, 2026 +46
The water is safe as long as you arent sailing in it.
46
At0mJack Mar 14, 2026 +40
Well it's OBVIOUSLY open. You just may get killed trying to traverse it right now.
40
FillFrontFloor Mar 14, 2026 +179
Jokes aside, this honestly sounds a LOT like what happened between Russia and Ukraine. Russia said, bum rush and we win. 4 years later they are still fighting.
179
SophiaofPrussia Mar 14, 2026 +96
And this technically isn’t a war. It’s just a special military operation…

Weekend excursion.
27
Skratt79 Mar 14, 2026 +30
4 years later and over 1.2 million casualties (Wounded, captured, KIA) although for some unfortunate Russians they are double counted as being sent back to the front after losing a limb somehow a thing
30
formallyhuman Mar 13, 2026 +350
Yeah, that's why they're sending up to 5,000 marines. That's what you do when the war is "pretty much done". It's such a weird feeling being like "yeah, the Iranian regime sucks but on some level I kind of hope the US and Israel get their shit pushed in!"
350
PsychologicalHost371 Mar 14, 2026 +205
This is how the war in Vietnam started. Sent a small number of “advisors” then just a bit more and more and more. By the end we had lost 67 thousand of them not to mention how many many more Vietnamese perished. Now imagine if oil was involved what would have happened.
205
asuleiman Mar 14, 2026 +120
Like Mohamed Ali once said, Iranians aren’t my enemy. They haven’t done anything to harm me. Well he said Vietnam but we can switch it to Iran. It applies the same

No viet cong ever called me N*****.
92
Vimmelklantig Mar 14, 2026 +94
>not to mention how many many more Vietnamese perished. No, let's mention it. 1.5-3.5 *million* people died in the Vietnam war and associated bombings and fighting in Laos and Cambodia. American deaths are barely a rounding error.
94
oops_i_made_a_typi Mar 14, 2026 +29
learned about the Cambodian genocide and how America's Vietnam involvement led up to it. absolutely disgusting and more people need to know
29
Throwawayalt129 Mar 14, 2026 +48
“Once you’ve been to Cambodia, you’ll never stop wanting to beat Henry Kissinger to death with your bare hands. You will never again be able to open a newspaper and read about that treacherous, prevaricating, murderous scumbag sitting down for a nice chat with Charlie Rose or attending some black-tie affair for a new glossy magazine without choking. Witness what Henry did in Cambodia – the fruits of his genius for statesmanship – and you will never understand why he’s not sitting in the dock at The Hague next to Milošević.” ― Anthony Bourdain

Vietnam started on a lie too
20
ClassicRemington Mar 14, 2026 +26
Every time someone mentions the Marines are getting sent in, that number goes up. Does anyone know what the actual number is? (Not saying you’re wrong, last I heard it was 2,200.)
26
formallyhuman Mar 14, 2026 +21
BBC said "up to" based on the general composition of certain types of Marine forces. I believe, at least initially, the roughly 2,500 figure is correct, but leaves room to double it. I'm not American so I'm no expert on the US armed forces, but it was how the BBC put it.
21
nnjb52 Mar 14, 2026 +36
They are sending the ARG which is 3 ships, the embarked air wing and MEU. The total number is about 5000 men but that’s including navy crew, air wing and marines that stay on the ships for command and control. It’s probably only about 1500 actual combat troops with a few armored vehicles and trucks. Couple f-35’s and cobra helicopters. They are designed to evacuate embassies, conduct quick strikes, special ops stuff. They have no armor, limited fire support and logistics support for about 30 days. They are not an invasion force.
36
banjist Mar 14, 2026 +232
We're engaged in a war of aggression and choice against a country who seems to have been at least half trying to negotiate in good faith when attacked. For the second time in two years. We are in fact heinous villains at this moment in time if nothing else.
232
formallyhuman Mar 14, 2026 +188
I mean, Iran was still negotiating for sure. But, for me, as a non-American, it's the...what appears to be outright lies that get me. This guy (US president) said less than a year ago that *that* aggression set back Iran's nuclear program by decades. Yet here we are, less than a year later, and the argument is Iran is a DIRECT threat to the US. Yet also, just this week, that f****** c*** press secretary at the White House made the point that Iran has no capability to hit mainland US.

What he sees on the teevee is what drives who he fires. This is probably going to be very unfavorable coverage.

Noem got 12 months free as allegedly Trump didn't want to fire anyone in the first year, because he got grief over having an unstable Cabinet from that in his first term.

Marco Rubio is the biggest grown up in the cabinet. And to be clear--that's not a compliment to Rubio, that's an indictment on everyone else. Marco Rubio f****** suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. And somehow everyone else is WORSE than him.

Nah he'll get reshuffled like the gnome lady with the melting face. He'll become an advisor or something I'm sure. If he fires him then the question will be 'why did you hire an incompetent buffoon, and furthermore why didnt you fire him when he made a laughingstock of you the first time around?'
597
interesting_zeist Mar 13, 2026 +266
Signal chat leak. Now killing American citizens and burning machinery. 🤷 That's what happens when these guys are not punished.
266
mohammedgoldstein Mar 14, 2026 +72
That’s what happens when you hire based on loyalty and if the guy looks the role rather than on actual competence.
72
RogueEyebrow Mar 14, 2026 +26
Also, three F-18 Super Hornets fell off the USS Harry G. Truman and were lost at sea because the crew was exhausted from having their deployment extended twice.

Signal Chat leak was like 137 scandals ago.
10
NewestAccount2023 Mar 14, 2026 +25
Trump famously had the highest turnover rate in his first administration by a LONG SHOT, he doesn't care about the "why'd you hire someone incompetent" angle despite one of his phrases being "I hire only the best people". Like were you not paying attention then? Maybe too young back then to read up on the news

Someone more incompetent will take his place. Judging by recent appointments, the replacement will probably be a 23 year old with a podcast and a LinkedIn Premium account. Department of Homeland Security already put 22 year old Thomas Fugate, in charge of its violent-extremism prevention office, so apparently experience is now optional.

I think you got both reasons summed up. Maaaaaybe if they came out and said something about those 12K protestors being killed and stuck to that, that would have been something. They haven't given any reason so we can just assume its another f***-up.

Possibly_a_Firetruck Mar 14, 2026 +98
He had a makeup studio installed at the Pentagon for this.
98
Addicted2Qtips Mar 14, 2026 +21
His incompetence is amplified by the fact that he fired over 20 high ranking, highly competent generals and admirals because they were too woke or something. This included the head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, the agency responsible for assessing foreign militaries’ capabilities. The reason he fired that person was because the agency’s analysis showed that the first Iran attack in 2025 only set back their nuclear program by six months, not forever, which is now apparently the official determination (in an insane doublethink kind of way)justifying our current engagement with Iran. So now we have incompetent people Hegseth appointed to replace them. It’s exactly what happens all the time when you put a shitty person at the top of an organization. They are threatened by competent people under them, dispose of those people, and replace them with lackeys. Only this organization is the most powerful military on Earth.

>Real answer: Oil $$$, Israeli influence, and another convenient distraction from the Trumpstein files You're forgetting a big one: reviving the faltering economy of one of the USA's biggest geopolitical enemies, aka Russia aka Trump's boss Putin, by sending the price of basically the only thing of value they have(oil) skyrocketing and then removing sanctions on them.

Time is genuinely on their side. They can hide drones/mines in buildings saving them and building more in nondescript warehouses for a month while the USAF flies around fecklessly wasting airframe hours without targets, all while gas prices skyrocket and morale plummets.
91
John-wick-90 Mar 13, 2026 +70
Not only buildings, Iran is also one of the most mountainous countries in the world, there are over 41,000 named mountains so it is geographically a much bigger Afghanistan with a lot of places to hide missiles and drones. Air superiority can only go so far as the US learned in Afghanistan where despite heavy bombing, the Taliban emerged relatively unscathed

Fun fact; Literacy rates in Iran are actually higher than the USA.
164
Bright_Brief4975 Mar 13, 2026 +102
I thought this had to be wrong, because I figured that women would be excluded. I went and looked it up, and female literacy rates for women between the ages of 15 to 24 in Iran are 98% to 99%. That is a crazy amount, almost universal for young women in Iran, it was even higher than the male rate for some reason.
102
Genoscythe_ Mar 14, 2026 +73
70% of Iranian STEM graduates are women.
73
lebastss Mar 14, 2026 +26
Have a conversation with an adult woman from Iran and you'll find her incredibly intelligent and thoughtful. Even if she seems to live a boring life. They also challenge men well and aren't submissive. You have to remember their culture was largely formed by being a focal point of the silk road. This created a people with genetic diversity and philosophical influence from across the globe earlier than probably any other culture. You see it in their language and food as well.
26
kace91 Mar 14, 2026 +79
You might not be familiar with Muslim culture. Seeking knowledge is mandatory for all believers, and one of the wives of Mohammed was a widely studied scholar of law and theology, so they have a pretty unmissable reference there. The talibans of Afghanistan are pretty much the only ones to ban women education, and most other states see that very negatively.

I'm surprised no one is mentioning that Iran is by far, the largest and the most armed country that the US has started a war with in the last 70 years. 3 to 4 times the population and land area of Iraq, 4 times the population than Afghanistan and 3 times the land area, twice the population of Vietnam and 5 times the land area. The US and Israel just killed Iran's new leader's father, mother, wife and 18 month old son. They killed a good portion of the leadership of Iran, who are likely close friends, if not direct relatives of Iran's new leadership. A girls school got bombed in the process; whether the US or Israel bombed it or whether it was a stray Iranian bomb, it will be seen by Iranians as something which would have never happened if not for the war which the US and Israel started. Do you really think if the US and Israel 'just leave' now, Iran's gonna be "we're good now"?

Apart from the ballistic missiles, Iraq was supposed to be better armed back in 1991 (unless you discard that because Iraq started it). They actually managed to get a larger number of coalition aircraft down.

killboticus89 Mar 14, 2026 +13
So when these "accidents" that keep happening turn out to be c**** drones, will you accept Iran is better prepared? Or how many planes gotta go down til you change your mind
13
OolonCaluphid Mar 14, 2026 +72
Iraq was a conventional war. This isn't. This is asymmetric. Iraq got basically steamrollered. The Iranian situation is more complex, with a much more embedded and wide ranging security force and military, who are aligned to an ideology not just a leader. Iraq was ripe for the overthrow of Saddam. Iran just killed 30k+ people for daring to suggest revolution.
72
The_Bard Mar 14, 2026 +15
Iraq rolled a massive army to the Kuwaiti border with Saudi Arabia. Coalition bombed the hell out of it, then knocked out their communications, and then feigned a frontal assault while flanking them. It was over almost immediately. Iran the US and Israel are just lobbing bombs at Iran with no real strategy. Iran didn't invest in massive modern ground forces, they invested in ballistic missiles and drones. So planning an air campaign against them is really stupid, because they are just going to lob whatever they can wherever they can.

beakrake Mar 13, 2026 +224
Hard to get a plane off the ground when your Department head is leaking your exact location to Russia, who is then feeding it to their drone supplier, Iran.

They do have shockingly good intel. Hitting soldiers in specific hotels is crazy work
45

The fix is in. Anyone who's been paying attention since Mueller knows it. Those aren't soldiers, they're *sacrifices* to the war machine.

Russians are really helping with intel for targeting.

The US is now lifting sanctions on Russia, a country that is actively helping Iran attack American assets, to alleviate spiking oil and gas prices caused by the US's decision to start this war. Nothing makes sense anymore.

It makes sense when you remember that Russia owns Trump though...

good thing we dropped sanctions on their oil. Masterwork on display by the executive branch
19

That was my thought, too. There’s a little chance that they knew that they were there on their own. Russia or China most likely dropped that intel to them.

It's going to be an interesting next few weeks. I don't think that island is going to be so easy to take.
51
Guac_in_my_rarri Mar 13, 2026 +36
>I don't think that island is going to be so easy to take. No, it won't be. It's not very far from the Iranian shore, it's an active city island with people on it too. Some ruins places, caves, the works and reminders of Afghanistan. Kharg is 25km off the shore of iran.
36
Nachooolo Mar 14, 2026 +13
I still wonder if Trump's Pentagon is seriosuly stupid enough to even try. That f****** island would place them on artillery range from mainland Iran, let alone drones and missiles.

zapporian Mar 14, 2026 +10
Um yeah no shit. WTF would you expect them not to do that after the US has been actively helping ukraine w/ satelite data + military intelligence in their own invasion of ukraine, for years? Like I’d probably be pretty sure Russia isn’t like just literally circling a few AWACS aircraft in the caspian, just outside the border from iran / tehran, and feeding them live 24/7 radar data for anti-air targeting (not that iran could even do much with that lol if they did) But if they did they would literally be entirely within their rights to do that, without any direct war involvement or war declaration. The US again has done as much w/r ukraine since the 2022 invasion. And this is speaking mind you as an american who is 100% pro ukraine. Heck if the US lost pilots due to that that would be our govt (ie trump’s) fault. This war is flat out illegal and utterly unconstitutional to begin with, for chrissake. Congress is supposed to vote on this shit for a f—ing reason. Ditto setting budgets *and directly controlling military expenses* etc. We are (in theory) a representative democracy, not an autocracy. Not that mind you congress didn’t willfully sign most of that away under bush jr, and prior. And pretty much refuse thus far to claw ANY of that back

They’re sitting ducks those planes, and so pivotal to the war effort. Smart targeting by Iran

Most casual observers don't understand how bad it is to have 5 tankers eliminated. Ofc US has plenty more but will take time for them to be repositioned. Iran will likely use this as an opportunity to exploit gaps in air coverage and launch more attacks.
67
BobsOblongLongBong Mar 14, 2026 +43
>Most casual observers don't understand how bad it is to have 5 tankers eliminated.  This makes 7 refueling planes damaged or destroyed in just 2 days. On Thursday two refueling planes had a midair collision over Iraq.  One landed with severe damage to the tail and the other crashed killing the entire crew.

Nope, and there are automatic cuts to it once it starts paying out more than it takes in. Easily fixed, but you know, we just can't afford it while we fight Israel's wars or if the banks, fortune500, or billionaires need tax cuts. Priorities ya know.

Couple of days ago I posted that hegseth should be packing his makeup bags right about now. He needs to go NOW. Him and Miller. Make it a 2 for 1 special. There is something seriously ill about those 2. The latest interviews displaying hegseth's bloodlust for this conflict and disregard for innocent lives should conclude his run as secretary of defense.
61
CertifiedLunacy Mar 14, 2026 +25
Not that I give a shit about iranian government or their ideology or beliefs, but hegseth is a particular islam hater. I think he thinks this is a cruisade and he is blood thirsty. He doesn't strike me as pragmatic at all, which a secretary of defense should f****** be. He's being all kinds of idealistic in the worst possible way. Playing a game of war on an ideological level like a 12 year old. He's going to sacrifice everyone for his stupid war.

Maybe our govt underestimated how effective Iran’s military power is. Also have you noticed a lot of the headlines lately have been “accidents” up to this point in our jets and ships? What a big coincidence.

Remember when Witkof told us Russia wasn’t providing targeting intel to Iran? > https://abcnews.com/amp/Politics/russia-denies-giving-iran-intelligence-us-troops-middle/story PSAB is not a secret location by any means, but it’s also a massive base. Targeting that site in the middle of nowhere SA is quite specific and odd if they are supposedly just “shooting” at random things. 🤷🏼‍♂️ *Just processing all that’s going on and being reported

I remember when Bush flew into Iraq on Thanksgiving. That’s was peak American Power. Now we’re having those similar planes get blown up on a tarmac. Embarrassing loss of material that we go to work everyday and pay for our defense. Incompetence.

Iran's getting a lot more drone hits than the media is leading on. It's just that damn near every US 'ally' in the mideast is a dictatorship that will give you decades in prison for releasing videos of hits.

They didn’t think they’d dare … the fear of getting killed kept leadership in line. Turns out executions don’t make people surrender but rather fight like hell? Who knew … regardless of how shitty they are attacking them in the middle of negotiations and threatening certain death pushed to the point of no return . We are literally Japan in 1941, we are the baddies and we’re paving our downfall on good intentions. God help us if we have to invade that mountainous country …

Just a couple of months back Trump couldn't stop humiliating India for their 6 Rafales downed by Pakistan last year. How many US damage USA has endured these past 3 weeks? This is so embarrassing for the US military. They have burned so much capital and weapons just to take out 180+ innocent girls.
8
ty_xy Mar 14, 2026 +8
Feels like the US losses have been relatively high in this conflict compared to previous conflicts. 6 refuelling planes, 3 fighter jets, 7 deaths so far. I could be mistaken though, happy to be corrected.

The US has now lost 6 refeuling planes? That's nuts Why would you have them in range of Iranian fire? Aren't these the kind of planes you base thousands of miles away so the planes that actually do the combat can refuel in the air and then fly a few more hours to the target and then refuel after making their way back?
