For All Mankind S5

Posted by GreenerMark

Season 5 is very strong so far, and I think Ep 3 was one of the best of the series so far. (No spoilers) I've found the show very interesting and compelling from the beginning, and it continues to be relevant and well-done seven years after it premiered on AppleTV+.

Ep 3 was so good. The flashbacks were amazing. Loved seeing young Ed again. And that walk down the hallway….😭

I started rewatching and I'm more struck by how little actually happens in each episode of seasons 4 and 5 relative to the first couple of seasons. The episodes in season 1 were almost movies in miniature, especially up until Jamestown, and they still managed to introduce and get us invested in new characters without it taking away from the plot. I still enjoy the show but it's definitely fallen in scope and quality.

Seriously! We've spent so long on Mars! I need time skips and for them to be setting up stations around the outer planets. Why is this show suddenly a police detective drama half the time? That's not what I come to FAM for.

Yeah, I'm not interested in this season's who done it. There are countless shows on the air that have that market covered. Where is the science "fiction"

Thing i am not liking is that this all feels like ground we have tread before. All that build up from season 4 and we are back to square. Oh the mars people are being opressed by the evil rulers. What was the point of last season? They achieved nothing. Why does anyone still even tolerate the russians? Who gave them control of mars? Now the little man has to fight the power all over again. Now instead of a class based uprising, it is a good vs evil based uprising. This was ed's entire arc? Seriously feels like a waste. The whole arc of last season was a waste.

> What was the point of last season? They achieved nothing. ... did you watch last season? If they didn't divert the asteroid, Mars would have been abandoned.

I have said to a friend that the last thing i want is for this season to become an allegory for the american revolution. I think thats where its headed, but I'm just a bit over Mars at this point.

The problem is they lost the "race to the next" bit of the show. They used to have plots with stakes like Be the first American Woman on the Moon, Be the first with a base on the Moon, Be the first to Mars, etc. Now it's "let's kidnap a space rock". I still enjoy the show and I think the race to find extraterestrail life might put a spark in it but it doesn't have the same thrill as before.

Yeah, the only characters left I care about are Margo and Aleida. And they get little screen time. The rest of the characters and most of the Mars plot lines… lack depth. I see the actors trying but the writing just isn’t the same quality as before Moore left.

A show like this is just hard. We all got invested in Ed and Gordo and Karen and Tracy and Molly and Danielle and Ellen over the first two seasons, but due to the nature of the show, the focus inevitably had to shift onto new characters. The smartest thing they did was seed Aleida as a main character since childhood, so that we at least have her as an adult to care about.

I found myself invested with the initial set of characters pretty quickly though and that has not happened with any of the new ones. Same with the storylines. I just don’t care much about what is happening on Mars and nothing seems to have as high of stakes as the earlier seasons.

They save all the plot for the penultimate episode and season finales. I now see why the show was cancelled after this weak season so far I've put the show on hold until season 6 ends and then binge it.

I thought it was kinda a little weird when Aleida's husband and daughter were just like "yea go on this dangerous space mission that will take over a year before we see you again." Over dinner

LOL! Yeah, I thought about that, too, but that's her life's work. And people are living on Mars....

I think trips to space and Mars have gotten so routine in the show, that it isn’t really considered dangerous.

Episode 3 was masterful, a really well executed way to tell that particular tale. The flashbacks worked well without affecting the pacing and both the ending and the closing credits shot of the capsule orbiting were perfectly judged. One of those moments where a single episode transcends for me.

Totally agree, S5 feels like the show found a second wind on Mars. Ep 3 had “instant classic” vibes. Kinda makes me want to rewatch season 1.

I’m glad it was peaceful, but it wasn’t where I feel his character was heading. I felt the same way about Danielle last season. She’s kinda just written off the show. It honestly feels like they originally planned in detail the first three seasons, and now they’re just making it up as they go. I’m still enjoying the show though.

Just seeing Gordo again made my day, the way Gordo and Tracy went out will always stick with me

I haven't really had the same feeling to be honest. I'll finish the series because I did appreciate the first 2 seasons. Season 3 and onward has really lost its luster. The biggest problem are the characters. S1 and 2 had amazing characters that really carried the story, but due to the nature of the show all the OG characters are now gone and replaced with mundane leads who aren't even close to replacing the quality of the ones from the first few seasons. It makes the plot lines less interesting and just overall brings down the quality of the show. Other people have mentioned budget cuts with how few sets there are compared to the earlier seasons, but it's not even that it's just how utterly pointless some of the new storylines are mixed together with subpar characters.

Agreed, Season 5 has been very good so far. I bowed out for a while in Season 3 cause it felt like they kept doubling down on their worst subplot (Danny), but I decided to start watching again. I'm glad I got through Season 3 cause Season 4 was a massive improvement. Reignited my love for the show.

I'd be really curious to go back and watch the first two seasons again, because like the last couple, this one just feels like it's missing something. I think I've been able to pinpoint it to not feeling invested in any relationships/friendships that are on the same level as Ed-Gordo-Dani (the Margo and Aleida scenes really work for me, though). Also, the broad story arcs are still great, but the dialogue is mostly... bad? And some of the performances are strong (Alex is the clear standout among the "new" characters), but oof, most of the B-tier characters are forgettable.

I've yet to watch any of S5 yet, was getting frustrated with most of S4 and I'm way more interested in Star City. I'll watch it when more episodes are released.

I'm enjoying season 5. The season 4 shenanigans with the asteroid really tested my capacity to suspend disbelief but season 5 has been fine in that department and I'm enjoying some of the new characters. Albeit I'll confess a complete failure to recognize Mireille Enos as Celia. Trying to think if she has some scenes with Ed. Slightly weird reunion of Linden and Holder!

I thought it kinda odd they didnt keep Ed til the end of the show. Sure he was getting old, but Buzz Aldrin is also literally still alive l

Cancer’s a b****.
2
Mister-Distance-6698 Apr 13, 2026 -3
Sure but the cancer was a writing decision to begin with.

Well then I’m sure there’s a reason for it, and I’m going to wait to see what happens.

salmonchaser Apr 14, 2026 +1
Aleida is the full show character. She was in the very first scene!
1
bautin Apr 13, 2026 +1
Yes, but Buzz Aldrin isn't directly involved in the space program or directing policy. He's just alive, doing his normal person things.
1
Mister-Distance-6698 Apr 13, 2026
Neither is Ed as of season 5. Hes a convicted felon puttering around trying to get in the way.
0
bautin Apr 13, 2026
He's still involved in things. He founded the Sons and Daughters of Mars. It just kept getting more ridiculous as the character got older and older. And I get it because people like the actor. But eventually, you're just too far in his future. This was a good choice by the writing team. The show needed to move on from Ed for a while.
0
Mister-Distance-6698 Apr 13, 2026
Buzz Aldrin is still doing things too. And canonically its like 15 years later than it is in the show. He was doing a LOT of things 15 years ago.
0
bautin Apr 13, 2026
Like leading space missions and staging revolts and forming political groups. Sure. You know the scope of what Aldrin is doing and what they had Ed doing is different.
0
Mister-Distance-6698 Apr 13, 2026
I think you are missing the point I'm making. I'm not suggesting that Ed dying now isnt believable. I'm saying that its perfectly plausible that he COULD still be alive, and that its an odd narrative choice from a storytelling perspective to kill the main character of your show off 1/3 of the way into the second last season.
0
bautin Apr 13, 2026
I think you're missing the point I'm making. It's plausible that he's alive, what's not plausible is the amount of effect he's had on global/inter-planetary events at his advanced age. Especially considering he's never held a public office or became insanely wealthy. I don't think Ed was ever meant to be the *series* main character. They just kept dragging him along because they like Joel Kinnaman.

Mister-Distance-6698 Apr 13, 2026
> what's not plausible is the amount of effect he's had on global/inter-planetary events at his advanced age. Hes in his early 80s. Can you honestly not think of a real life person in that age range who has had a major impact on global events? Cause like... there's one who is president as we speak. John Glenn went back into space at 77, and going to space in FAMK is an easier task than it is in real life
0
bautin Apr 13, 2026 -1
Boy, you really got me there, because I totally didn't mention holding public office or being incredibly wealthy as a way for people to effect the world despite advanced age. John Glenn went to space as a test subject, not as a mission commander. *And* it was seen as a boondongle just to have him ride on the shuttle. Edit: Commenting then blocking just shows you're more concerned with getting the last word than being right. Ed was mission commander in 2003. The same year he stole the asteroid. Those things I mentioned give people influence outside of their personal ability. Ed has none of those. He can be told "no". He isn't particularly gifted in any capacity. He has had no reason to be as influential as he has been.

rcanhestro Apr 13, 2026
Ed probably spent 1/4th of his life in space between all the moon missions and Mars though. Ed's body is basically fucked (which is why he has cancer on the show).
0
Mister-Distance-6698 Apr 13, 2026 +2
But again that is entirely a writing decision. There can be real world reasons to kill him but narrative wise its an odd decision to kill what is ostensibly your main character 1/3 of the way through your second to last season. And if they WANTED to keep him alive there are real world examples of living Apollo astronauts you can point to. That's all I'm saying.

Best episode since season one. However the bar wasn't very high.
