Foreign investors pull out of India at record pace
Foreign investors have pulled $21 billion out of Indian stocks in the last two months, putting 2026 on track to be the worst year for outflows since the markets opened to overseas investment in 1993.

STCG tax, LTCG tax. Why would anyone sane invest in such a market? Vietnam is a much a better investment hub atp.

I am not sure, mate. New government here is also tightening tax regulations

Indian govt wants investment in the country but also wants to tax everything, you can’t have both the boobies in your mouth.

Sure, but it seems to be increasingly likely that it is simply not viable for countries to support companies without getting any taxes. The whole "but they create work" does not really work, because pay is not keeping up with inflation and the like, the average worker is globally earning less while the rich companies are earning more. At some point I think investors are going to end up having to accept a lower return on investments then they are expecting now, and a much more realistic view on yearly gains, as well as having to accept that when the public is earning less, they can't expect to continue to expect returns to increase. The current growth and investment expectations are unsustainable in the long run, the math isn't mathing and has not been mathing for quite some time. The world is effectively subsidising the rich, because of the 'they will move' threat, ignoring that if there is a job that needs doing, it isn't just going to sit around not done, someone is likely going to do it, sure it might not be a big company then, but does it need to be?

On a semi related note, I was in India recently for a short business trip and omg the visa process was asinine. My e-visa was rejected twice for some stupid reason even though everything was correct. I ended up applying for an arrival visa with the exact same info and I got in without an issue. What?? I've been to many countries but India was the only country that seemed hellbent on making it difficult for foreigners to do business there.

Yeah they don’t want even the locals to do business

What’s funny is this is a vast improvement from License Raj era, the government was so anti-capitalist it plunged India from like top 6 GDP since forever to barely hitting the top 10 at times. It still keeps a lot of that bureaucracy and culture. You need our market we don’t need you attitude.

A part of it is also the security of the employees. From what we hear from a few of our customers that are (still) in India, they feel "unsafe" to send especially female personnel down there... In this, too, Viet Nam is a better location... Three IT labs I was part of setting up 10+ years ago in Bangalore have moved out of India in the last three years, two to VN, actually, one went back to Germany. Two of them had the "personnel security" issue... And remember, that was in Bangalore, a city deemed rather safe...

Yup. I’m originally from India but never lived there. Work at Apple. Jumped at the opportunity when they sent me to India for 6 months. Worst six months ever. People stare constantly, try scam you, I couldn’t speak to male colleagues without them trying to make sexist jokes, hit on me or act egoistical when I told them to do tasks. India needs a MAJOR social overhaul, and yet everytime I see Indian women speaking up about it online they get attacked.

I mean, India has religious fascists in power, nobody in their right mind should be doing business there until the political landscape changes.

They're trying to invite investors while making it hard for investment to actually happen.

Ripples of the war. Have you not read the article?
1
GoliathTCB May 13, 2026 +1
I did read the article. It still doesn't implicate the conflict as the reason for investor flight out of India.

There is a silent recession and inflation going in India. Yeah the GDP growth is good, but reality is way too different. Everything is becoming increasingly expensive everyday. Add the rising fuel prices and population boom along with unemployed youth, there is a disaster waiting to happen. Its a wonder India even functions as a country. If anything collapses(fuel scarcity or something similar), there is just no infrastructure to keep India working. It'll be hell on earth.

25% of Indias Economy can be replaced with ai tokens.
1
Fresh_Boysenberry576 May 13, 2026 +1
Too bad no one has figured out how to make those tokens cheaper than Indian workers
