The trailer itself is far more creative in scope and idea than what the title and poster let on. Scared of the eventual “Forgotten Island gets forgotten at the box office” if audiences pass on it cuz of its name/vibes

You're being downvoted because you're being needlessly pedantic around a marketing phrase that was designed to be flexible enough to be technically accurate, which is the sweet spot for most marketing copy.
Global = Famous and/or active in at least two distinct geographic regions
Comedy = Comedian or stand-up comic
Superstar = Legitimately a meaningless phrase that suggests fame or public awareness
Jo Koy = Jo Koy
The other person you're arguing with has given ample evidence to support all of those claims, but you're moving the goalposts for no reason and claiming to laugh at your downvotes. You're arguing that no one from the UK has heard of a guy who has a show at the O2 in a couple of months.
So, what: Jo Koy has convinced the venue to lose truly catastrophic amounts of money and ignore their own market research? Or is possible that a comedian you're unaware of is more popular than you realized, and now you're just digging in your heels to avoid being wrong about an incredibly minor point?

>Forgotten Island - In Theaters September 25
>Your best friendship is worth fighting for.
>DreamWorks Animation, the studio that brought you unforgettable bonds between a boy and a dragon in How to Train Your Dragon, an ogre and a donkey in Shrek, and a robot and a gosling in The Wild Robot, now welcomes a dazzling and emotional story about two lifelong best friends who must come together before they drift apart in Forgotten Island.
>The new original film is written and directed by Academy Award® nominee Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado and is produced by Academy Award® nominee Mark Swift, the filmmaking team behind Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
>Grammy and Academy Award® winning supernova H.E.R. and Liza Soberano (Lisa Frankenstein, Alone/Together) star as high school graduates Jo and Raissa, who have been best friends since grade school but are now about to embark on separate life paths.
>While celebrating their last night together, Jo and Raissa stumble upon a mysterious portal that transports them to the fantastical island of Nakali, packed with magical and mythological creatures they grew up hearing stories about from their Filipino families.
Some of these figures will become friends, some foes. Joined by well-meaning-but- hapless weredog Raww (Dave Franco) and a small-but-mighty pack of pals, Jo and Raissa must face The Dreaded Manananggal (Tony winning icon Lea Salonga), the most feared creature on the island. When they discover that the memories of their entire friendship are the price for returning home, Jo and Raissa will race to find a way to leave the island before they forget each other forever.
>
>The film’s all-star voice cast also includes Emmy nominee Jenny Slate (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Dying for Sex), Manny Jacinto (The Good Place, Top Gun: Maverick), BAFTA nominee Dolly de Leon (Triangle of Sadness, Ghostlight), global comedy superstar Jo Koy (Haunted Mansion, Jo Koy: Live from Brooklyn) and Emmy w***** Ronny Chieng (The Daily Show, M3GAN).

They really burry the lead on it being Filipino mythology. Compared to Coco where they advertised it as Mexican mythology, this trailer uses US music, and I thought the island was like prehistoric dinosaurs based on the one bird we see. LISTEN: the MOVIE doesn't hide the fact that it's in the Philippines, the TRAILER does. Of course the trailer still has to work with scenes from the movie. The MOVIE has Filipino myths and uniforms and all of that. The TRAILER is trying to hide it into something generic. There is not one word in the language or a city, or a name drop in the trailer. The people cutting the trailers aren't the same people as the people making the movie. The moviemakers made a very lovingly Filipino movie, that's the selling point, but the person cutting the trailer tried to hide the Philippines from it. I'm just observing.

Well Who Let the Dogs Out and Don't You were legit hits in the Philppines back when they came out. Might be more interesting if it features western songs that were huge in the Philippines but are unknown or obscure in the US (like Elton John's Skyline Pigeon, or Carpenter "You")
They say this movie has some 90s and early 2000s references but I wonder what kind given the PH setting. Jolina Magdangal? Britney Spears? Magic Knight Rayearth? Shrek?

The thing is, external cultural influences can also be a part of local culture, even if they weren’t created locally. Celine Dione is as much a big part of Philippines culture as local singers. The songs used in the trailer are songs that were popular in the Philippines, so it is very much something people in the Philippines can recognize and resonate with.
3
purplenellyMar 26, 2026

Yeah but I'm not doubting its cultural accuracy, I'm talking about the marketing strategy, they seem to be hiding that it is the Philippines in this trailer. I'm sure it will be stated in the movie itself multiple times, but they scrubbed it from the trailer.

purplenellyMar 26, 2026
+1
Ah yes, anybody who is "well-traveled"... What kind of superiority complex is that? You think you're better because your parents are immigrants? I'm sorry I don't have parents who flew me to Asia when I was 12, I guess, but I have solo traveled on my on with a backpack through Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Croatia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Turkey, India, Nepal, China, Mongolia, Japan... You guys use the dumbest insults on Reddit. Like even if I wasn't well-traveled, you'd be an arrogant and condescending person if you looked down on me for not traveling. You really thought that was something that made you superior? Do you also march into the poor neighborhoods of Nepal and act all superior because the people there aren't "well-traveled"? Or you just do it on Reddit?
In any case, I'm talking about the marketing for this trailer, where they obviously hide the fact that it is in the Philippines, which in an odd choice, because you would think it's a selling point.

It's funny because for every Puss in Boots the last wish or The Wild Robot, DreamWorks makes some 4 terrible Trolls movies or Boss baby sequels.
Say what you want about Pixar, but people's beef with them is they made incredible films for years and they haven't reached those highs again, but that's only a problem of people who only care about the next movie rather than the overall output of the studio.

I remember being in animation and the general feeling was that it kind of ebbs and flows between studios. Good movies and products attract good talent, shifts take place over long periods of time, but they do.
Stuff like this gets my former animator’s heart excited about dreamworks again, which at one point, they did with their work on Shrek. The same way Pixar films have done in the past for others. They were who first to inspire me to get into 3D animation to begin with.
It was Disney with Fantasia that got me into 2D.

Looks fun. I loved Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and this looks like it will have the same energy.

Yep, I'm in. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (despite, well, everything about that name) was an incredible movie, so I'm there for anything those chaps deliver.

I’m so tired of the trailer trend of a shitty simplified remix of a classic song that then dramatically slows down, and speeds up toward the end.
Can’t really tell how good or bad the movie will be, but choosing such an on the nose song for an incredibly simple premise doesn’t give me much hope. Looks like Coco without the heart or cultural significance.
I’ll hold out hope that it will actually tie more in to Filipino culture and turn out great.

Uy Pilipinis!
Btw Filipinos do not act like this. The two main characters are pretty Americanized so I when the line "you don't have to go to the US" was said I was amused.

Wonder if the two go to a public or private school, because other than the uniform, the school scenes are very us-coded.

public - uniforms, private - no uniforms usually in the Philippines

buddy what i went to a private catholic school for most of my life (except for college) and we wore school uniforms. it’s super common for both types of schools to have school uniforms; schools that don’t require their students to wear uniforms are very, VERY rare. i have never seen a private school have a no uniform policy, even the most exclusive ones lol. in fact, private schools are even more strict with the uniform policy.
1
ValenzuMar 26, 2026
+1
Yes, public schools have some flexibility for the use of uniforms since not everyone is privileged to afford extra unfiroms.
1
lavabread23Mar 26, 2026
+1
yes, you’re absolutely right! i live near a public school and from what i’ve seen although the majority are wearing uniforms, there’s more kids who wore regular clothes and they’re allowed to do so which is in contrast to my school where we’d get stopped and questioned by a teacher if we even so much as forget to wear our neckties 💀
no idea what that one redditor’s smoking for him to just randomly say something so plainly untrue and incorrect lol

ValenzuMar 26, 2026

What?
It's very common for private schools to have uniforms.
The difference is that a lot of public elementary school uniforms are generic (dark blue) and always short-sleeved while private schools are more elaborate and if the schools are air-conditioned, can have long-sleeves.

eb12se4nt-z13ow-97g0Mar 26, 2026

yeah but its opposite in the Philippines since richer people can afford clothes, there are some that have uniforms but usually they don't.

Not to be a snitch or anything, but one of the crew members commented on [JJ Bersch's review of Hoppers](https://letterboxd.com/jjdotbiz/film/hoppers/) and says Dave Franco is better in Hoppers than their own upcoming Dreamworks film.

The voice acting seems off. It doesn't seem to match the animation. Is that just me? Maybe it's the sound quality. Maybe this is first pass audio. Well, we'll see.

This seems way too ambitious, passionate and high effort, how did this even get made? It's like someone who's really passionate about animation got carte blanche to make the movie they want. I'm afraid it won't do well at the box-office, but it will be praised by adult fans of animation who love Steven Universe and The Owl House. I hope I'm wrong and families latch onto it, but "the 90S" hasn't been 10 years ago for 20 years.

This looks interesting and all but why are these bitches driving a bus illegally? This is the Philippines why are they committing crimes? Plus this is a kids movie kids are going to hate this unless there's a reason like maybe the bus driver died or something.

It does look like the cops show up. I'm guessing part of the reason the one girl is leaving for the US is because her parents think her friend is a bad influence
1
ValenzuMar 26, 2026
+1
I dunno, that's a shallow reasoning for the parents to want to leave for the US.
1
RosebunseMar 26, 2026
+1
Is it? I mean, granted, this film was made before the US turned into a dystopia hellhole, but kids get sent away for reasons like that all the time. And it's pretty clear that the one girl is doing increasingly more wild and crazy things.

The want for Filipinos wanting to move to the US is more towards a want to have a more successful life thinking that the Philippines is an unsalvageable hellhole. Usually those with this mindset are middle to upper-class Filipinos that already have relatives in the US.
Judging by the trailer, Raissa seems to be middle to upper-middle class given her 2-storey house. She's a "rich kid" as they say.

The movie appears to be set in an early 90s-2000s coastal provincial town. So a quiet life, but not a lot in the way of job opportunities. Those living in larger houses over there from the 90s-early 2000s would have already have come from generational wealth. My dad’s side of the family is from a similar town in Batangas (province south of Metro Manila), but now his hometown is a tourist destination.

Eh. Keep in mind that people, despite the current administration, do still want to immigrate to the United States for education and life.
That is especially true for Filipinos as they were formerly owned by the United States, can speak English quite well, and have many relatives/enclaves in the nation.

Jo looks like how a Filipino would think what a Filipino "tomboy" lesbian would look like.
Lesbianism have existed in the country pre-colonialism based on the existing records.
