Former death row inmate Richard Glossip released on bond after nearly 30 years in prison

The legal system often treats innocence as procedurally subordinate to rules about timing, jurisdiction, and finality. A famous example is Herrera v. Collins. The Supreme Court held that a claim of “actual innocence” by itself is generally not enough for federal habeas relief absent an independent constitutional violation. Justice Scalia went even further in concurrence, suggesting the Constitution does not necessarily forbid execution of a person who had a “full and fair” trial even if later evidence suggested innocence. But, hey, 'Merica is the greatest country on Earth because we allow a handful of people to become extremely wealthy. Or something.

I do too. But even if he successfully sues the state, the amount he will get will be a joke.
