they forgot the words “or life”. First-degree felony punishment range in Texas is definitely very broad. Technically if one were to receive a sentence of 10 years or less, they would actually be eligible for probation. There are definitely arguments to be made in support of and against this broad range. in reality, the parole laws in Texas for a violent offense like this make it so any sentence in excess of 60 years really only affects how long someone will be on parole after they are released. On an offense like this, first parole eligibility comes at half of the sentence or 30 years, whichever is less. So 61 to 99 has the same parole eligibility as life.

Bet it’s just depending on what the prosecutor thinks will stick. Texas is big on the prison industrial complex…. In this case it’s not so bad tho
24
PM_tanlines 3 days ago +5
5-99 is just the range for a first degree felony in Texas
5
riaowo 3 days ago +4
Yup that’s texas for they also have that if you’re convicted of murder your sentence can be from 5-99 years the judge has a ton of leeway in sentencing people

Sure would be great if we didn’t live in a soul crushing capitalist hellscape where parents have to spend all their time and energy working just to barely make ends meet instead of being able to be there for their kids.
127
strega_bella312 3 days ago +311
It would also be great if people who were not mentally/emotionally equipped to have children just...stopped having them. I know plenty of adults who don't work 2-3 jobs and have spare time to spend w their kids and still f*** them up bc they're just terrible people. ETA: someone commented and deleted something about "you can't fault stupid people and prevent them from having kids when education is such shit in this country " - smart and stupid has nothing to do w it. I know dumb as f*** people who raised beautiful children w love and respect. I'm talking about the mentally stunted narcissistic lazy assholes who give zero thought to the kinds of people they're sending out into the world w the rest of us.
311
gofishx 3 days ago +53
The problem is that relying on "this type of person shouldn't do that thing" isnt ever going to be a viable solution for any human problem. People in generalare always going to f***, they are always going to do drugs, they are always going to try to break the rules, and they are always going to disagree on things. The most effective solutions to these sorts of things need to work with people, not against. You cant necessarily prevent bad parents, but a community can come together to make sure the local kids have access to good schools, safe spaces for children, youth outreach, recreational sports, etc in order to give those kids a better shot at life, security, and happiness.

So quick question. Who decides who lowlifes are? What living standards are we abiding by? What happens when the cities are at fault for living situations? Would we sterilize people before they have kids? What happens to the kids abused outside of their home? Would we automatically sterilize abuse victims since more than zero end up abusing children like they were?

Trust me, those parents would still exist even if we had universal healthcare and childcare. Plenty of adults walking around out there who are basically just overgrown teenagers
31
Beginning-Sound-7516 3 days ago +52
I think there’s a little more at play here than capitalism making their parents have to work long hours… plenty of the killers from my citys parents don’t have jobs at all. It’s possible to raise your child to not kidnap and torture people even while putting in a 60 hour work week
52
YomiKuzuki 3 days ago +32
Please, let's not delude ourselves into thinking that's the only reason. There are people who have kids just to tick a box or to show off. They don't actually give a shit about their kids, just how their kids existence can benefit them.
32
GermanPayroll 3 days ago +22
Or maybe they’re just bad people. At some point you just don’t torture people even if your parents have to work two jobs.
22
Cumdump90001 3 days ago +3
Yeah, bad people exist. But a whole lot of society’s problems stem from people’s basic needs not being met. It’s literally just a fact that people do less crime and are generally better to each other when their needs are met and they have opportunities in life. Saying that bad people will still exist doesn’t detract from anything I’ve said. People still drive drunk so we should just get rid of laws against drunk driving? Or do we do what we can to address the problem and then handle those who still are a problem regardless?
3
ProfessionalPack7205 3 days ago +9
I mean just saying this happens in every society. Happened long before capitalism happened. I'm not syaing it's helping but it's been a problem forever
9
Kalelisagod 3 days ago +24
Then don’t f****** have them. Making excuses for shitty parenting is about the lamest thing I’ve heard. These kids are predators and should be in prison forever. But their parents should be held accountable also. Personally if a child is found guilty of a violent crime the parent should do 50% of the time with them. No f****** exceptions.
24
Cumdump90001 3 days ago +4
Advocating for a better society isn’t making excuses for shitty parenting. Recognizing the reality of the situation isn’t making excuses. It’s facing reality, calling the problem what it is, and advocating for a solution. You clearly let emotion rule your mind and don’t care about solutions, just retribution. And short sighted ignorance like that is why we are where we are as a country today. Congrats, you’re the problem!
4
Kalelisagod 3 days ago +5
It’s not emotion. I deal with kids all day and watch parents that could not care less. These parents need to be held accountable. As for these boys for all I care they should be locked away forever. There is a zero chance they amount to anything in society except for criminals or burdens. We need less of those.

We have 365M people in the US. Majority of the population don't commit these type of crimes.
2
Cumdump90001 3 days ago +10
Right. But that’s not an argument against anything I said? People drive drunk all the time and don’t get in accidents. Thats not really relevant when someone says “you shouldn’t drive drunk.” Like… please think critically here. Connect the dots. You can do it.
10
Nullhitter 3 days ago +4
>Right. But that’s not an argument against anything I said? You're crying about capitalism and I countered that the majority of the population don't turn out to be vicious monsters.

I’d venture to guess they’ll get 10 years max, be out in 5, and have no real consequences for taking another’s life
7
14Knightingale27 3 days ago +3
The victim isn't dead. Not that they shouldn't receive firm consequences, mind you, but the victim was never intended to die. They planned a beating, not a murder. I'm actually kind of surprised? Usually with these things a group gets together, shit gets out of hand, they go for murder. They kidnapped him to beat him up, then let him go and told him not to tell the authorities (good on this kid for going there despite how scary it must've been too).

> AUSTIN, Texas - Four 17-year-old men are facing first-degree felony charges after allegedly kidnapping and torturing a classmate in an attack planned a week in advance. > The suspects - identified as Jose Rojas-Alvarado, Oscar Armando Santiago-Martinez, Angel Lemus-Perez, and Carlos Roberto Oliva-Villeda - have each been charged with aggravated kidnapping with a deadly weapon. Lemus-Perez faces an additional charge of engaging in organized criminal activity. > According to arrest affidavits, the attack occurred on February 19, 2026. The victim left Del Valle High School with three of the suspects under the impression they were going to get pizza. After a brief stop at a gas station, the suspects drove the victim to a home on FM 969, where a fourth suspect was waiting in a detached garage. > Once inside the garage, the situation turned violent: > Restraint: The suspects used duct tape to bind the victim’s hands and feet and cover his mouth. > Assault: One suspect held a gun to the victim's head while the others beat him with aluminum bats, a walking cane, and a belt. > Torture: The victim reported being burned, forced to drink alcohol, and repeatedly threatened with death. > Recording: Investigators state the assault was recorded by one of the suspects. Motive and Evidence > The victim told investigators the attack was sparked by a dispute involving a girl—specifically, that he had been speaking to one of the suspect’s girlfriends. The suspects allegedly warned the victim that if he contacted the police, they would harm both him and his family. > After being dropped off at a separate location, the victim reported the incident. Authorities documented extensive bruising and contusions across the victim's chest, back, and legs. During interviews, some of the suspects reportedly admitted to the assault, stating they had planned the attack roughly a week earlier. Community Impact > Del Valle ISD confirmed that the four suspects are no longer enrolled in the district. In a statement, the school district emphasized that the incident occurred off-campus and is being actively investigated by the Travis County Sheriff's Office. > The news has left the student body shaken. "I thought it was insane," said student J'Kaideon Mitchell. "We never have anything super crazy like that." > If convicted, the four teens face a prison sentence ranging from five to 99 years. Peak small p**** energy. Fighting over a girl at 17.

What exactly do you expect them to say about a non-school related incident that happened off campus?
229
Derptionary 3 days ago +25
Because schools will claim "We are responsible for you until you reach your home!" whenever you yourself misbehave in order to get you in trouble... but if you happen to be the victim then the school turns into "Oh it didn't happen at the school not our business!" When I was in middle school I had an incident where they found out I had gotten into a fight on my way home and the school was threatening to suspend or expel me because they claimed they were responsible for me until I reached my front door.... right up until they discovered I was the one who had gotten attacked but managed to come out slightly better than the other kid. Then they flipped to it not being their business and that if I wanted to report it I should go to the police... but if I went to the police I might get in trouble too so maybe I should just let it go.
25
UnremarkabklyUseless 3 days ago +7
Why would the school say they are responsible for you until you reach home? Is it when you take the school bus? If not ymthe school is not responsible as soon as you exit the school premises.

So, looking at them, there's a good chance this will be a Republican talking point for the foreseeable future. Especially likely, depending on who the victim was, if that comes out. I also don't expect the bare facts, or evidence, to be the main focus either.
56
donkeybrainhero 3 days ago +80
Just look at how it's written. "17-year old men." I've never seen a news outlet refer to underage teens as "men". But it elicits a stronger reaction rather than saying "highschoolers" or "teens". Now, apply that to their names and mugshots, and you get your talking point. What they did is horrific, but this is definitely being framed this way for a reason beyond informative reporting.
80
Adultery 3 days ago +97
The Texas criminal justice system says 17 year olds are adults. If you’re 17 and get arrested, they’re taking you to adult jail.
97
Ok-disaster2022 3 days ago +7
Part of that is to protect the legal rights if the accused. Minors tried as minors have reduced rights for defense compared to someone tried as an adult
7
PhoenixTineldyer 3 days ago +30
It's Texas, they want them tried as adults so they call them men.

You're so worried about how it's being framed, but informative reporting is not a real thing anymore. Everything is skewed. Either way this should illicit a strong reaction, if you want people like this, living around your neighborhood go for it. Any teenager who's capable of this sort of thing in my opinion should be tried as an adult and held to the same consequence.

This is a tale as old as time tbh Teenagers throughout history have always been kind of terrifying. Some people are capable of incredible violence and when your prefrontal cortex is still developing and you're raging full of hormones and trying to prove yourself to your friends it can be a recipe for some seriously fucked up behaviour, and as a result this kind of story is one that has happened every once in a while since basically the beginning of time. Like... if you want to traumatize yourself you can read about Junko Furuta, Shanda Sharer, Sylvia Likens (kinda counts cause her caregiver was the one bringing kids into it) It unfortunately isnt something new
