A former staffer of Rep. Eric Swalwell, a leading Democratic candidate for California governor, says that the congressman raped her when she was heavily intoxicated, an allegation Swalwell strongly denies.

Yup, and every Democrat seems to agree with most dropping him and calling for him to back down. If only the Republicans could have an ounce of the same ethics when dozens of victims come out or idk, their name is in the Trumpstein files infinitely more than anyone else with many victim statements about their abuse. Its not only Trump either but Matt Gaetz who Trump nominated to be US Attorney General to help cover up Trumps own pedophilia was never admonished by Republicans publicly and he decided to back out himself when the truth about him doing drugs and sleeping with a 17yo girl came out. George Santos was another for other reasons but so many scandals yet Republicans refuse to call anyone out now.

Remember that Franken was forced out at the same time Republicans were running known pedophile Roy Moore for Senate. The guy had been banned from his local mall, but not the Republican party. And he just barely lost. Republicans have never had actual morals.

Matt Gaetz? You mean the Beavis & Butthead-looking doofus that exposed his tackle to underage girls in a bowling alley, trafficked girls across state lines, did drugs and slept with an underage girl, and was overall a creepy sex-pest? And suddenly disappeared from the running for the Attorney General spot (and in general) when all of that came out? Matt Gaetz, the pedo representative from Florida?

These stories are conviently timed. Someone wants swalwell gone, just like MN dem Al Franken. You can bet these victims evaporate as soon as the any kind of actual looking happens. He need not bend and resign, but the claims should be fully and unbiasly investigated. Unfortunatly, the FBI is a shoe in for the current administration and cannot be unbias.

in theory yes, but in reality. The GOP has a magic Hypocrisy wand that Democrats can't use. Basic example of 2 different people doing the same crime: Let us pray and let God forgive his \[insert Republican\] mistakes and sins since he's now a Born-again \[insert more nonsense\] - Praise the Lord. VS He's a Democrat, all democrats are evil, end of story, he's going to hell.

Its absolutely ridiculous that of this goes forward and is proven true, no republican voter or legislator will understand the irony.  Although part of me hopes that *were it proven true and consequences applied*, it might help staunch Trump defenders ask themselves "what exactly is the difference between this and Trump, Epstein, and their victims?" Lmao I'm just kidding, these people are absolutely braindead and could not give you a definition of "logic" or "evidence" if their government subsidized lives depended on it.
84
m0nk_3y_gw 2 days ago +41
> were it proven true and consequences applied, it might help staunch Trump defenders wasn't that the thing about Al Franken? Rumors of being creepy (hover hands over a female comedian that was grabbing Robin William's ass on stage on the same tour, and holding too tightly to other women years earlier while posing for a pic) got him to resign instead of the investigation he wanted was even started. And Republicans stopped and thought about ? nope

Not that easy. The bar for a criminal conviction is ridiculous for r*** and sexual assault. And many victims don’t want to go through the trauma of being called a liar in court while reliving the worst day of your life. This point stuck out to me: Ask any guy what they fear most about prison and they may say death, but many will reply SA. Women live with this fear everyday, and when it happens, the trauma is incredibly severe. Now imagine reliving that trauma for weeks as every detail of your trauma is questioned and doubted over and over and over.

Couldn’t agree more. I’m liberal as all hell but breaking the law (especially something like SA/r***) deserves the full extent of the law thrown at you regardless of what letter accompanies your name. Justice is justice, and it shouldn’t be red or blue.

PogoLlama72 2 days ago +487
If this is true, charge him. If it’s not, say so under oath. Either way, Congress should stop handling these things internally and require independent investigators by default.
487
look_at_tht_horse 2 days ago +97
Tbh, if you're under fire for r***, I don't know that an extra perjury charge is much of a threat. Oath isn't magic truth serum.
97
fmfbrestel 2 days ago +39
The point is, if he his guilty it should be good that he gets the extra charge. That's why you want him to deny it under oath AND investigate independently, exactly like pogoLlama72 said. He never said we should take his word for it.
39
xXTheGrapenatorXx 2 days ago +9
Perjury is often not charged, though. One of those laws that is more often than not unenforced.
9
viveleramen_ 2 days ago +17
The idea about perjury is that you tell your side, and you lie if you want to risk it. If there’s not enough evidence of r***, but there’s proof you DID lie about where you were that night, or who you texted or whatever, you can at least be indicted on perjury. It’s not enough, but it is something. Then, when you get caught doing the thing a second time, and your previous perjury charge comes up, it’s much easier to lose that one.
17
wip30ut 1 day ago +6
the huge obstacle is that these allegations may not hold up to the standard of being subject to prosecution as criminal offenses. Allegations of r*** & sexual battery for adults is very different than those involving minors. Testimony alone is not enough. And even censure by Congress is a tall bar just because these victims don't want to testify in front of a legislative body. Several of the Epstein victims have stated they will not testify in any Congressional hearings, only criminal proceedings.

The primary isn't for a party nomination. It's all one ballot anyone can vote on and the top 2 candidates go onto the general election. > CNN found corroboration for key elements of each of the women’s claims, including the former staffer who said she was sexually assaulted. Two family members and a friend said in interviews with CNN that she told them about the alleged 2024 assault in the following days, and CNN also reviewed text messages she sent two friends describing her allegations at the same time. “I was sexually assaulted on Thursday,” she wrote to one of her friends, adding: “By Eric.” > The woman also shared medical records related to her receiving STD and pregnancy testing after the alleged assault. > For the woman who connected online with Swalwell over Democratic politics, a family member and two friends confirmed she told them last year about the incident where she ended up intoxicated in his hotel room. CNN also reviewed messages between her and Swalwell, including a photo he sent her that matches footage of him during a CNN interview in her city on the night they met in person. > The women described a similar pattern of events: Swalwell, who is married and has three children, showed close interest in their lives when they were in their twenties and finding their footing professionally, making them feel special and even starstruck. Then, they said, he would send them increasingly sexual messages. Many said they reciprocated and engaged with him in part because of his position of power. In some cases, those inappropriate exchanges escalated to alleged unwanted physical touch or sexual assault, often tied to episodes of heavy drinking. Swalwell is denying the allegations. But this should rule him out of the Democratic candidates for CA governor. People can choose from 9 other candidates: * Xavier Becerra, Democrat, former U.S. Health and Human Services secretary and former California Attorney General * Chad Bianco, Republican, Riverside County Sheriff * Steve Hilton, Republican, Fox News contributor and former adviser to conservative British prime minister David Cameron * Matt Mahan, Democrat, mayor of San Jose * Katie Porter, Democrat, former U.S. representative representing Orange County * Tom Steyer, Democrat, billionaire entrepreneur and former presidential candidate * Eric Swalwell, Democrat, U.S. representative from the Bay Area * Tony Thurmond, Democrat, state superintendent of public instruction * Antonio Villaraigosa, Democrat, former mayor of Los Angeles and former Assembly Speaker * Betty Yee, Democrat, former state Controller

Steyer has been talking the talk since 2014 and personally funded his 2020 campaign; he even flipped to supporting single payer healthcare last year. I'd take a late round pick on him, maybe he'll bust, maybe he'll be a hit, but he's better than any of the bizarro gop candidates

I think it might be safer emotionally to not make heroes out of these people. I know that there are going to be some people in it because they genuinely want to do good and be of good public service, but we need to remember they are in a position of power and corruption can be a desire too hard for some to overcome. Remember, they work for us, and we lend our power to them so they can be our representatives. Without us they have no power.

I get your rhetoric, but an innocent man absolutely has something to fear. What you say would only be true if innocent men hadn't been sent to jail over false accusations. Isn't he the guy who got honeyvaged by a chinese spy? Someone measure the libidos of people who go into politics--we need to put them on meds

This pathetic loser spoke at my friends’s graduation a few years back. His speech essentially was just recounting a time he was arrested as a teenager and his parents have to spend a lot of money on a lawyer to get him out of trouble. It was a really bizarre speech, and he honestly seemed like he might’ve been a little tipsy during it. Didn’t even realize until afterwards that he was sitting congressman smh.

I'd like to congratulate Governor Tom Steyer on his victory. This is his to lose now. I hope he does well and is more JB Pritzker than Michael Bloomberg.

The Democrats put up a dozen candidates and they're all varying degrees of bad. It's truly awful. Porter can't give an interview without coming off like a giant ashore, Villaraigosa has no business being in the race with his history of corruption, Thurmond's experience is as state superintendent, Yee's got Gray Davis taint, etc. If Becerra had Steyer's money he'd be running away with it, but now people are going to get behind Steyer because of the chance of two republicans out polling the democrats in the primary

What we won’t see are Democrats blaming the victims or calling them liars.

I read this article and if you notice people are wanting him to be held accountable and are demanding him to step aside and drop out, unlike the other side that would support him and say he did nothing wrong. One side wants accountability, which is something you should all want.

That's awful and if he is proven guilty, give him prison time. Same should go for everyone, regardless of whether you are rapist Joe Schmoe or the president of the United States.

I hate that the dems are the only party who care about this issue. We have a rapist criminal as president and the republicans just laugh about it.

I think the Democrats need to stick together. They barely have a slim minority. If they prosecute him, it’s one less seat to stop Republicans. (See how f****** stupid that sounds?!)

The timing is suss, but medical exams and texts dated to the time of the alleged attacks are not. I was still on the fence anyway, but this really looks bad for him. He should drop out and be investigated. This isn't just a "some women said he did this" kinda situation, they have receipts...

Even if you question whether it adds up to a sexual assault or not. At the very least, he preys on young women using his power and position to impress them and he cheated on his wife and basically fucked over his family.

>“All governments suffer a recurring problem: Power attracts pathological personalities. It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible.” Frank Herbert The politician class at least regarding how our society functions, favors psychopathic personalities. Narcissists, egomaniacs, sociopaths. The people who value their elevation, who feel so much ambition they are willing to do whatever they feel they need to in order to fulfill their wants. Those who feel entitled to the world. The humble person, the empathetic person, the thoughtful person, the self reflective person? They don't do this as often. They ruminate and watch and observe. They settle for quieter parts of life and find comfort and fulfillment where the pathological types are restless. And often they think they simply are not good enough because they can see their limits and how they can fail and how they can disappoint. They can feel the true weight and consequence of power where the pathological types only see the joys of endless power and privilege.

[So like only 1/6th as many women as Trump](https://www.axios.com/2024/10/28/trump-sexual-misconduct-allegations-women). I think it’s great that Dems are calling for him to resign as opposed to MAGA who flocked to their party’s rapist.
