Iran isn't a rational actor and they believe that the continued existence of this regime is at risk. I suspect they believe they can "scare" countries into backing away from support for action in Iran. The ironic thing is, it'll probably galvanize people to support action *against* Iran.

I’m honestly uninformed here but how is France letting the US use their air base different from the gulf countries who are facing missile and drone attacks on a daily basis?

Fr France bankrolled the GWOT in Africa, they, the Brits and the US are the few nations that are willing to conduct a little operation across the world for their own interests And Iran fucked with both UK and France who wanted to stay out

The EU is already sympathetic to Iran and getting hurt economically while its “ally” is intent on escalating and making everything worse. Spain just closed their airspace to US military flights to the ME today. I wouldn’t be surprised if more EU nations followed.

Certainly agree with this, but this is also a very very American target and they've already stated that commercial targets such as datacenters are not off limits. This could also be a trial run for further attacks and/or could be a message to all American businesses overseas that they are not isolated from the conflict.
