Is it really a betrayal if it's been their modus operandi for years?

MrFilkor Apr 9, 2026 +84
Hungarians even voted for this *twice* (2018, 2022), giving them absolute power. And it was well known (even then), that they were Russian puppets.

Putin has a tight leash on him!
57
snoosh00 Apr 9, 2026 +22
So like... Why is JD Vance campaigning for him?
22
VEMODMASKINEN Apr 9, 2026 +24
Because Putin has a tight leash on Trump too?
24
snoosh00 Apr 9, 2026 +3
Oh, I'm aware.
3
Overall-Medicine4308 Apr 9, 2026 +2
Trump has a fondness for anti-liberal movements around the world.
2
snoosh00 Apr 9, 2026 +4
I know. My rhetorical question was kinda pointless (because it's so obvious)
4
Ecureuil02 Apr 9, 2026 +16
No kidding. How much is f****** up established world alliances worth keeping this guy out of jail?
16
BuilderRemarkable242 Apr 9, 2026 +10
To them? They'd rather burn this planet down
10
diegoeche Apr 9, 2026 +4
Then why Hungarians are overwhelmingly supporting Orban? I don't get it. I lived in Hungary. I read the history. Why do they want to be Russia's puppet state?
4
MinorKeyEnjoyer Apr 9, 2026 +6
they’re not. polls have the opposition winning
6
Dassiell Apr 9, 2026 +3
How about the last election, or one before that
3
Overall-Medicine4308 Apr 9, 2026 +3
Orbán is buying the votes of poor people with food and money. He’s so much like Ukraine’s Yanukovych!
3
diegoeche Apr 9, 2026 +2
Unfortunately I've met people pro-orbán. Both in Budapest and outside of it. Some people truly believe the propaganda.

Few-Acadia-5593 Apr 9, 2026 +26
Imagine, you sit with ten other people the one person at the table that kept saying “f*** this table” for x years becomes the mole… and you’re surprised? In 2026?
26
windingsand Apr 9, 2026 +50
If the US really is pulling out of nato in whatever form this would be a chance to make nato 2 without them and hungary
50
CucumberWisdom Apr 9, 2026 +19
They're not. Congress and the Senate would never approve it. Especially not after the midterms
19
notnickthrowaway Apr 9, 2026 +29
Trump doesn’t care about what Congress does or doesn’t approve, all he has to do is sabotage and break it. Like he has been doing whichever way he can.
29
Apprehensive-Air5353 Apr 9, 2026 +2
That's not entirely true at all, and if Trump could just do whatever he wants then he would completely ignore all Supreme Court rulings, but he doesn't do that. As for congress, they never *actually* do anything to reign him in, but he would otherwise. They're still obeying some level of the law despite being fascists for some reason.
2
CrankHogger572 Apr 9, 2026 +1
That's not true. He won't have the power to do so, he can't just declare that we're leaving NATO and have it actuallu mean anything. Also, Supreme Court would likely shoot down any Executive Orders he makes regarding NATO. They haven't been as partisan as Trump had hoped, he's been losing Supreme Court cases left and right lately
1
IOnlyEatFermions Apr 10, 2026 +1
Trump is Commander in Chief. The US remaining in NATO is meaningless if Trump won't order the US military to come to the aid of our allies in the event of an attack.
1
LeoDiamant Apr 9, 2026 +5
You still think there will be midterms? Id say its a 50/50 at best.
5
Koala_eiO Apr 9, 2026 +3
It's definitely going to be interesting. Hopefully Trump doesn't stage terrorist attacks on your soil to cancel the elections. Remind me in November.
3
LeoDiamant Apr 9, 2026 +2
Yep, just sitting tight w a loose plan in the back pocket if things go sideways.
2
W31337 Apr 9, 2026 +1
The rest of NATO could leave and create NATO2. Then the USA wouldn't be a member.
1
TemporarySun314 Apr 9, 2026 +24
nah. The rest of NATO stays, and the traitors can make up NATO 2 if they want..
24
Mr_Waffles123 Apr 9, 2026 -11
Can’t be NATO 2 since only Spaine and England are on the Atlantic.
-11
wollycottonbrains Apr 9, 2026 +9
Wha about Canada, Portugal, and France? They’re nato states as well.
9
Mr_Waffles123 Apr 9, 2026 -13
Well you see Greenland and Canada are going to be part of the North American Treaty Organization. Portugal doesn’t count and France is just there.
-13
Agitated_Reveal_6211 Apr 9, 2026 +1
You should buy a map. Also, Spaine? Spain, or España.
1
Mr_Waffles123 Apr 10, 2026 +1
Did I not say Spaine? Maybe you should learn to read.
1
Droctulft Apr 10, 2026 +1
> Did I not say Spaine? That’s his point. The country is not called that.

Alone_Again_2 Apr 9, 2026 +6
I’ve a question for those more versed in internal Hungarian politics than I am. If elected, does P Magyar dismantle the state apparatus that has been created to hold power (ie media control, redistribution of power to smaller counties, etc) or does he keep it and use to his own ends?
6
ComPakk Apr 9, 2026 +5
He promised to dismantle the old system and put countermeasures in place so it can't happen again. He also presented some pretty realistic paths and goals to this if they win. Obviously we will see what actually happens but if he keeps 40% of what he promised the old system will crumble.

razgondk Apr 9, 2026 +8
Slam!

Expando3 Apr 9, 2026 +3
Raise your hand if you thought Hungary was with NATO and not a mole in NATO passing intel to Russia.
3
Electrical-Lab-9593 Apr 9, 2026 +2
sometimes in intel, its better to have a mole you can watch, then be looking for an unexpected mole.
2
Expando3 Apr 9, 2026 +2
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

No ' ' needed around betrayal. Call it what it is.

These aren't air quotes, these are actual quotes. They mean that this word or phrase was directly used by the quoted person, it's not part of the article writer's explanation or commentary. Think of it as a soundbite, but for print media.

ProfetF9 Apr 9, 2026 +9
when will this be enough to kick them out of the EU?
9
Explorer_1990_ Apr 9, 2026 +15
12 APRIL we will have election
15
CrankHogger572 Apr 9, 2026 -1
And what are the odds the election is fair and isn't rigged? 0%? -3%?
-1
boersc Apr 9, 2026 +11
You can't kick them out, but you can isolate them. No real information is shared with them any more, unless neede for a vote.
11
letir_ Apr 9, 2026 +3
That sounds pretty ridiculous. Running and hiding from fellow member of EU because you know that they share information with the enemy is not a solution.

Kick Hungary out of Nato and the EU, problem solved
3
GoethesFinest Apr 9, 2026 +1
We really really really need consequences for how the Hungarian Government has been acting for at least 10 years. Makes me sad, that the EU apparently just looks past all of these things all the time.
1
Jman1a Apr 9, 2026 +3
Imagine it was Poland or Italy doing this. Would be a full crisis within the EU. But Hungry? Nah
3
Ordinary_Local_6904 Apr 9, 2026 +2
Kick hungary out of the eu and all other economic and defence agreements. You’ve had 16 years of their nonsense, stop being so damn stubbornly weak. Let them join up with the flailing belorussian and russian and serbian economies. They can reminisce and replicate the loser ussr together.

France is the EU's biggest importer of Russian natural gas. They spend around half a billion euros a month for Russian gas.

At this point a war between Europe and Russia, the US, and Hungary is unavoidable. We just need to hold out long enough for Germany to fully remilitarise.

There is this wonderful thing called outside. You should check it out if you think that.

Macron knows something about betrayals. He betrayed France by supporting Islamic extremism and terrorism.
