I've started watching movies blindly and avoiding all trailers and synopsies. Had no idea what this film was about other than that it's well known and written by Tarantino.
The first half seemed just like other Tarantino films, suspenseful violent thriller that had me hooked. I was genuinely curious how that family was going to get out of this situation, especially with the crazy brother. I thought the dynamic between the two brothers was incredibly interesting, rooting for one and hating the other.
The mexican bar was a bit over the top but still felt real. Salma Hayek, okay. I was laughing at Tarantino getting a foot in his mouth, weird but whatever. Then when that first vampire face morph happens my reaction for the rest of the movie is just what the actual f*** is going on. I thought maybe this is a dream sequence or the drinks were laced but no, we're doing a straight up vampire massacre now. Logic goes out the window. Character dynamics are gone. It was quite fun. Kinda felt like I never finished that original story though.
Overall verdict what the hell lol.

I went into Nightcrawler pretty much blind too, since I had never really heard of the expression in reference to “accident chasers” before. I was always a Jake Gyllenhaal fan so I was like ok let’s try this out. Holy hell I was not prepared for one of the most terrifying performances of his career. Just straight up sociopath, progressively gets more cold hearted and even watches his cameraman die in front of him.
It was good but I’m not sure I would ever watch it again. Really well done in the vein of Requiem for a Dream where it’s a great movie overall that just leaves you hopeless and feeling depressed.

Sinners, for me, was more integrated than that. They were up front about the magic of music and attracting monsters. Oddly, I put From Dusk till Dawn on the same shelf as Predator. Characters who think they are in one movie wander into a VERY different film.

I knew Sinners was a Vampire movie from the start, but honestly all the set up for the Juke Joint just completely drew me in to where I forgot about it. But then Remmick slammed to the ground and it was an immediate reminder of what we were in for.

AlmightyRulerMar 22, 2026
+7
Except that the writers seemed to forget that part almost immediately. It's never explained *why* the "magic" draws evil things. The vampire saying "I wanna see my people again" could mean anything. Does he mean the old Celts? The Saxons? The *Irish*, since...he is, apparently? And can anyone actually *see* the ancestral ghosts getting conjured up, or is supposed to be a metaphor, or...??
Also, the guitar player was so irrelevant to the plot you could excise every scene with him in it and have the same movie.

By the way this was written by Tarantino, but its Robert Rodriguez directed. I swear it was their 1st attempt at an experimental collaboration. Because you're right the RV is pure Tarantino exposition thriller, but the Bar is all Rodriguez horror-fantasy. Its almost like two incomplete "grindhouse" movies welded together.
I was the opposite. All I knew going in was vampires, George Clooney, and Julliette Lewis. And at 16 Juliette Lewis was enough for me. But I didn't know it was Tarantino, and I wouldnt have recognized Rodriguez' name yet. I wasn't ready for Keitel and Clooney in a one-room hostage movie. Suddenly switching to the vampire Cheech-Trejo-Hayek gorefest to end the movie.

It's interesting how this movie launched without any effort to hide the vampire part (it was in trailers, TV ads, and the poster--as well as newspaper reviews) and was sold upon it.
Source: I watched it in theaters opening night.
Then, a couple decades later people are obsessed with the idea the vampire part was supposed to be a secret.

This I think was a product of the times. Terminator 2 had the same problem back then - they gave away that Arnold’s T-800 was a good guy (as opposed to in the first movie) to help sell it to audiences, but this is actually a twist if you go into the movie blind.

I never see the show reccomended anywhere! Its definitely a hidden gem. Just as crazy and weird as the movie, and the 2 main characters are a really close match to old Clooney and Tarantino.

I’ve heard that Sinners is heavily influenced by that film, how true is it?
13

Ryan Coogler specifically mentioned that it was an influence, along with Rodriguez's "The Faculty", John Carpenter movies (esp. "The Thing"), and the Coen Brothers movies (he mentions "No Country for Old Men" and "Inside Llewyn Davis", but you can't tell me there's not a bit of "O Brother Where Are Thou?" in there as well).

It’s the same film in essence. Two brothers, they’re criminals, who encounter vampires while on the run, and it even ends almost exactly the same.
There are several different things that occur throughout the film, and the performances are absolutely fantastic all around. It’s more of a popcorn flick than sinners that’s for sure.

I went it in blind too and it was a educational movie for me.
I knew about the violent vampire stuff. Was cool with that.
I did not know about the dancing scene.
My teenage body did not move, did not breathe, for that entire 5 minutes. I had heard the word "sensual" before, but now I understood it.

Haha watched it with my parents as a kid when i was like 10. I saw the trailer and knew its a vampire movie and told my parents its a vampire movie. About 1/4 way through my dad was like, looks like you confused the movie, but its not a bad crime movie. Eventually even i decided that i must have confused the trailer with some other movie. And then the vampire thing happened and i was like told you its a vampire movie, i told you. Felt good man!

I saw this in college when it came out. We had zero idea what it was about other than it was a Tarantino project. That was the wildest in theater experience of my life. People were standing up shouting and cheering.
Everyone was down for a sort of neo western type crime movie and then WTF is happening right now.

There were rumors years ago that they would try to do a prequel about the brothers because the first half of the movie is also a decent crime movie.

I'd have been pissed about the "bait and switch" if it hadn't been for the comic book elements in the open credits that, when the movie was released, was a kind of signal that the movie wasn't to be taken too seriously. It'd be weird to watch for the first time in 2026 were comic book visuals and motifs are just standard film visuals and motifs.

You actually got to see it without having the plot twist spoiled in advance? Wow, I'm so jealous.
Please also report back after watching Terminator 1 and 2 in that order. (Not nearly as big a plot twist as FDTD, but still, must be nice to be one of the few people who didn't already know from the trailer that which the director intended to come as a surprise.)

I watched this movie with my dad as a teenager back in the 2000s. He had already seen it and gave me no prior details other than it was a Tarantino film. It still goes down as a favorite of mine due to how caught off guard I was by the switch up.
I think he enjoyed watching my "wtf" moment just as much as I enjoyed the movie.

May have already been mentioned, but they made a series where the first season basically covers the events from the movie, but spread across the whole first season.
This allows for a whole lot more detailed exploration.
After the first season it gets weird. They go into the back story of the vampires, which if I remember correctly, weren't actually vampires but some kind of ancient race of Mayan "snake people".
I kind of stopped watching after the first few episodes of the second season because the streaming service it was on removed it and I wasn't interested enough in the snake people angle to hunt it down.
Still, I really liked how the first season sort of gives us an "exploded view" of the events in the movie.
Sadly, none of the stars of the film are in it - Clooney, in my opinion, did an amazing job as Seth - but if you watch for the story, it's well worth it.
UPDATE: The series I'm talking about is separate from the movie sequels which I had forgotten about till I was reading some of the other comments. I haven't seen the sequels, so I'm not sure if they are related at all on plotline to the series.

Love the movie, the only thing I hate is the inconsistencies in vampires transformations, sometime it takes a while, other it's instant.
And the "automated stake" that was beyond stupid.... A lance would be better than carrying that heavy thing around.

That same formative experience as a kid made me a fan of movies and I try to avoid trailers as much as possible for that reason. Wish Sinners hadn’t given away the demonic spectacle that’s to come in the beginning but taken the same approach as from dusk till dawn
