I’ve been a fan of From since season 2, and I can say I’m happy that it’s ending with five seasons. I think any more than that, and the show would have become too long in the tooth.

Yes and no. If they knew how many seasons they would get it could have easily fit into less. There was quite a lot of fluff and things that ultimately went no where.

A lot of which wasn't actually fluff, but was simply ignored for a hurried ending. D&D saw dollar signs everywhere. And now they're almost unemployable. Serves 'em right, really.

Eh, alot of it was fine in the books, but just unnecessary for the show. They could have cut all of dorne, most of the iron isles, everything about Euron, etc etc and the show would have been fine.
>And now they're almost unemployable. Serves 'em right, really.
I mean, I hated the last season just like everyone else, but let's not live in an alternate reality here. They were set to do Star Wars before Netflix dumped a truckload of cash on them ($200 million) and now they are doing the 3 Body Problem. They are still incredibly successful..

One of my favourite shows, Homeland has 8 seasons. So does Dexter.
4
method115Apr 15, 2026

Homeland pulls it off but there was I think 1 or 2 bad seasons in there. It's been a while since I watched it but it did pick up again after that. I know for a fact it was one of the seasons after one of the main characters dies but not sure if it lasted 1 or 2 seasons. Then from there it's good again. Dexter didn't work IMO and is actually a show I use as an example of going on to long.
2
NurRauchApr 15, 2026
+9
Dexter started losing quality after the conclusion of the Bay Harbor Butcher plot line in season 2. That was an example of a show blowing its mother load way too early on. Dexter almost being caught as the area's most prolific serial killer is the type of thing that you need to save for the very end of a show, not something you spoil right away in season 2 as a middle-tier boss fight.
Season 3 already showed signs of flailing. Jimmy Smits was an interesting season villain but compared to the stakes of Season 2 the show almost felt like it was taking a vacation from meaningful plot advancement.
They managed to pick it back up with Season 4, but if we're being honest that was less because of the core themes of season 4 and more because of Johnathan Lithglow's magnetic acting powers. And once they concluded Rita's arc, IMO the show never found its footing afterward. The following seasons were confused, jumbled messes of uncompelling seasonal villains, stalled-out character development for Dexter, and soap opera-quality melodrama with side characters who could never measure up to the weight class of Sergeant Doakes or Agent Lindy in the earlier seasons.

Does it though? People seem to forget old days of networks pushing through 10-15 new series each fall, then canceling the majority of them if they failed to capture an audience within the first dozen episodes.
Netflix still cancels a ton of shows, but the trend of canceling a show within weeks of its premiere seems to have slowed for the most part. FX, HBO, and Apple in particular have been very faithful to their creatives when it comes to letting a show continue despite low viewership.

In terms of horror shows, it’s really solid. Great, honestly. It’s not really an apples-to-apples comparison, but in terms of horror and overall quality I’d put most Mike Flanagan shows at a 5/5, and From at more of a 4/5. It leans a bit more into tropes and can get a little schlocky at times, but it’s still very worth watching.
Also worth noting, when From hits, it really hits. There are some genuinely brutal, haunting moments that stick with you.

If you're someone that needs a story to have a payoff and for everything to make sense, then this show is probably not for you. If you're OK with B-grade plotting and characters doing dumb things, you'll be satisfied. I'm in the latter camp. I know it's not great but it doesn't need to be for it to be watchable.
1
Arch3r86Apr 16, 2026

Fair enough, yeah, I could be fine with that.
I’m mostly wondering if it’s one of those shows where it’s easy to tell that the writers ran out of material and are just cashing in checks by prolonging the mystery… or wether it’s actually well done and entertaining the entire way through.
Like, Lost was well done imo, I didn’t mind the constant mystery.
But in regards to the show “Dark”: season 1 was a real masterpiece, but then Dark season 2 & 3 both felt like added on nonsense going nowhere, a lot of unnecessary badly written c***, with an even dumber finale. (I understand this view might be controversial, but I feel strongly about this opinion and will die on this hill)
Dark could have been great, but 1 good season doesn’t make it a masterpiece (the way it’s talked about online..)
🤷🏻♂️
I’ll probably give From a chance, it looks fun.

So I would like to wait on a lot of shows until they wrapped them up so I knew there was at least some kind of ending however I went through a really bad depression episode(?) A few years back that began during and followed Long Covid. I already struggled with Bipolar Depression but the Long Covid, which was mild compared to many others with it, was kinda crazy and I had like 7 specialist including physical and speech therapy. Anyways, to the point, I watched so much tv, in particular sci-fi, that I basically ran out of sci-fi. I was watching shows not in English with shitty text translation just to have more content.

3 seasons have aired and there have been no answers or any substantive plot progression. The "I gotta go" shit borders on parody at this point. The funniest thing was a character that leaves a certain place and you think there is going to be SOME plot progression but she ends up right back where she started at the end of the season. Felt like a middle finger to the audience. But I still watch it for whatever reason, I've never really seen a show this bad that's somehow still compelling.

I totally get where you're coming from but have a different perspective. For me I see them not answering questions as a deliberate choice to cause frustration in much the same way the characters trapped in the show get no answers just more questions. My *hope* is this has been the writers plan from the start and that they wrote the show to progress this way towards a clear ending that answers all (or at least all of the main) questions we have as viewers. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it isn't until the final episode of season 5 that we actually have our questions answered and we get closure.
I could be very wrong and the writers make a mess of it but I have some hope the writers started the show with a clear full story and they could stretch it out or compress it/cut bits depending on how many seasons they got. Knowing they have a final 5th season to end things they should be able to give us a satisfying ending. Hopefully anyway 😁

For me that sucks even if it's what they intended. Purposefully frustrating your audience is just whack storytelling. I think it's more likely that it's just a standard mystery box failure where the writers aren't good enough to handle the ebb and flow of mystery > reveal that is required to be done throughout the entire show properly to keep the viewer engaged and not feeling cheated.

I don't disagree with you and I am most likely wrong with my way of trying to rationalise it 😂
They may have been like "oh this is a cool idea... people get trapped in a town with scary ass monsters at night and these special rocks protect them" and they get the green light then someone asks "so like why do they get trapped there and where did the monsters come from?" and the writers are like "shit we didn't think it would actually get picked up so we don't really have answers to that part yet but we can work it out as we go" lol.

Another thing is that we're still kinda at the halfway point of the show so. Theres 20+ episodes to go for answers and questions.

Bullshit. people keep saying they answered stuff, but they didn't answer shit, only made more questions. Here is an example.
Take this question: "What are the bottle tree trees?". Some spooky mysterious tree/s with bottles hanging from them with little notes inside that have random numbers written on them. Are the numbers dates? Is it a code? why are some of the numbers backwards? These are all reasonable questions. But the actual answer? They are musical notes! You might be saying eureka! there's your answer, checkmate atheists!
But that still makes no god damn sense. Musical notes mean nothing when you don't know the order to play them in. They also make no sense being notated in that way. They could have just, you know, wrote the musical notes down the way you are supposed to write musical notes down. They could also, you know, actually tell you a cohesive order to play them in, then you got an actual song going. And then, what is it even mean still? Ok so now you have some dumb-as-shit convoluted system for coming up with some dumb song, now what? Why a song? What does the song mean? what is the song for? Why all the bullshit just to get to this point and still have no clue what any of it means any way?
Hurr durr, people aren't paying attnetion, hurr durr, the show *is* giving answers hurr durr.
Bullshit. I have even more questions. I don't count this as an answer at all. It is slightly more information than we had before, but since I have like 10 more additional questions now and still no answer to the original question which is, 'what are the bottle tree/s?", have we actually gotten anywhere? I paid more attention than the show likely even deserves at this point, and I only have more questions and have achieved zero answers. Learning a teeny weenie bit more about the monsters does not answer an answer make. I still have the question "Yo, what is the deal with these monsters yo?
Just when you think you are starting to piece stuff together, the show just shovels more shit onto the pile. who is the guy? Is he the guy from the radio? Who is that other guy? What was that thing banging on the roof of those creepy cabins? And what are those cabins anyway? What is with the dates? Or are they dates or some dumb ass musical notes, or something? What is with the rotten food? Why is the town some old 50s town but all this other shit is even older? What is the deal with the 50's monsters? why are there ghosts? Why do some people hear voices and others don't? How do people get stuck in the town? How did that one b**** leave the town, only to just come back anyway? And what is the deal with the light house? And what is up the bugs? And why can some random characters jsut like have visions and time travel and shit but other people are just cattle standing by to be massacred? What are the talismans? Why did the monsters not kill the one guy? What is with the disgusting children? What is that jibberish they are saying? I could keep going, but what is the point? You don't the answers to these questions either, and if you think you do, you are wrong. I watched this last time it aired and these are just random nonsense questions off the top of my head, none of which get answered in season 3. I have way more than these still, and I have perused what some people claim are the answers, and those people are wrong as far as I can tell. They are just hair brained theories based on nothing. There are no answers yet, only more questions. until we know what this all is and what it means, you don't know.
You might think you are getting answers, but you aren't really. Here is another example off the top of my head.
The weird symbol we kept seeing. What is that? Oh, we later learn that it is tree roots from above where the children were sacrificed. Ok, so now we know what the symbol is of, and where it came from, but we still have no clue why, so we still don't have the answer. You might tick this off as one more answer to another one of the questions, but until we know what it means or why any of it happened or why some people see that symbol, we still don't know what it is or why it is significant. If that is what you mean by the show is giving answers, I fundamentally disagree with you on what constitutes an answer.

So this isn’t on Paramount+ anymore? Ugh.
I’ll be waiting for the show to conclude and binging it through the free trial on MGM+.

Oh this is very reassuring. Hm, the show got renewed this early? Before the S4 premiere is even out? Does it mean the S4 is considered ot be a banger by those internals who made the decision to renew it?

They probably realize they are going to potentially lose viewers who feel like the show is just spinning it's wheels. By declaring there is a concrete ending, it helps solve the problem many viewers have which is, do these writers even know what's happening? and why? I have watched all three seasons and for the most part enjoyed them, but overall there is absolutely zero clue wtf is actually going on in this show, despite what people claim. None of it makes sense, we still need more information.

I’m happy this show gets a natural ending it looks fascinating but I never watched it because I don’t want another subscription.
Maybe one day, but it’s always good when a show is able to end gracefully for the fans.

I was really hoping 4 would answer and end the series...so this is a curse and a blessing. Guess I'm glad it is getting the leeway to end how it wants but IMO it is DRAGGING as most shows do and spinning wheels. Like you have an interesting premise, its done well, acted well, like why are we just elongating everything. I also think this is yet another show where if they are going to stretch it out at least just release as a season and not episodes a week. There are WAY too much of characters not interacting how most would when clues/mysteries/etc are at stake and everyone has a piece of the puzzle but nobody shares for dumbass reasons to make us wait until next week where they do it again.

At least we know it is getting an ending. But it also means we need to wait like a year and a half to figure out wtf is even going on, and that's assuming they actually explain anything for a change.

Season 4 seemed like it sucked to me, especially toward the end. Honestly to me this show is a mostly fantastic concepts/ideas that they execute poorly on type deal.
Or that goes for the writers/plotters anyway. Most of the performances are good, and it's shot and directed pretty well too. But it isn't all held together well.

This show's success 100% depends on how they wrap up the mysteries.
I like the show...right now. But if the ending is dog-shit, it'll ruin the rest of the show. Like LOST or Game of Thrones.
So hopefully this means we'll get everything wrapped up nicely. Excited for S4 in a few days.

Is that enough time for the writers/producers to scramble figure out answers to their own questions, and make sense of all the non-sense they threw onto a board?
Will the writers/producers ever make the characters actually communicate basic information with each other? Or archive data and generally behave like they’re trying to solve the mysteries of where they are?
I’ve been burned by these Lost producers before.

I don't think it's ever a "bad" show. It has 2 big criticisms: some of the acting is questionable, and it takes a LONG time to start giving answers, spending a lot of time layering the mystery
However, I will say that at the end of the last season they started answering the big questions, so I am optimistic. It's just for the first few seasons, you have to accept the fact that it is a very vibes based horror show introducing mysteries that you don't start getting answers to until the end of S3
