Game Changer + Make Some Noise mashup set 👀

I bet they told the players it was MSN and then revealed a GC twist. That would be good fun.

Another season, another attempt at Sam trying his best for his audition as next Saw mastermind

Really looking forward to it being back. I find I get less interested in Make Some Noise as the Season goes on (especially this year when they’ve only had one new contestant all season) but GameChanger I’m always consistently focused in on. Even when there’s a bad episode, the setup generally is interesting enough to keep you engaged.

Gamechanger has built in stakes-raising and demands constant creativity in a way the Game samers do not/cannot. It’s fine for a show to be more familiar and get into a comfortable groove, but only one show really feels like appointment viewing.

Gamechanger is legitimately an all time great, a very tenuous concept which requires constantly that both the people in the game and its producers are on their A-game. Think about it, the fabric of gameshow design has evolved from simple concepts that build more tension in later iterations through gimmicks like Password -> The Chaser or rely on their interminable existence in the zeitgeist like Family Feud/Jeopardy. GC requires interesting gimmicks PER EPISODE + buy-in from the players cause there isn't the tension of *this randos monetary fortune hinges on his esoteric knowledge* so if the game falls flat, it's hard for the contestants to save it. Whereas Make Some Noise is a good ape on Whose Line, but that format is tried and tested. Any college bar has that exact setup for improv night in every town basically.

Make some noise has definitely gotten stale for me. I basically only watch the Brennan Josh Zach dream team episodes now.

You're really missing out. There have been some bangers in there. Jacob, Kimia, and Jeremy is a great team, so are the musical improv people like Ross and Jess.

Pretty much agreed, but I’ll always tune in for some Ross Bryant as well

Make Some Noise got weirdly self referential and increasingly uninterested in keeping with its own (already loose) ruleset. Like the episode with Izzy Roland, Lisa Gilroy and Angela Giarratana was the first time I thought an episode was actually bad, it just turned into noise. And I love these performers in other episodes/shows, though I think Lisa is getting a bit much with her "F*** Sam" routine, but either the prompts/minigames are poorly selected for the group or the group's synergy is off since they're all "Oops all chaos" kind of improv comedians EDIT: Also want to add the "tiktok" editing being a lot more noticeable this season, but that might just be me.

Interesting take. I find MSN to be consistently funny - the best show they have. GameChanger has very few episodes that are fun in and of themselves. They mostly rely on knowing the cast and just enjoying seeing them.

Genuinely insane take. Brave of you to post it though. Respect

While I disagree with you about MSN, to the point I've never seen an episode from start to finish as it's not for me, I do agree with you on GameChanger, especially in recent seasons. It's moved away from "fun and creative idea for an episode" and firmly into "how can this play into person X's specific trait", and has ramped up the parasocial nature of it entirely, the who wants to be a millionaire episode was the most egregious example, it's nice that they helped a friend, but as an outsider it was mind numbingly boring and offered close to nil in terms of entertainment value. Similar with the "social media challenge" episode, and several others, with the only ep that I can genuinely remember enjoying from the latest season being spin the wheel.

Too many of the episodes have stopped being competitive games. "Brennan Lee Mulligan cannot win" was a great episode, but it also pointed the show in the wrong direction. When too many episodes are either rigged, have heavily scripted outcomes, and/or allow the cast to take over and subvert the game, it falls apart.

Agreed, it was great when it was more akin to "zany" Taskmaster, with the game's existing to facilitate a wide and varied set of reactions. Newer seasons of Game Changer(and honestly most of the recent shows), have felt like they were purposefully designed to try and catch that perfect "youtube/tiktok/instagram" clip. I can understand why they've moved towards it, as it seems to be what a lot of folks want, but it makes for a weirdly disjointed viewing experience.

Game Changer has always been my favourite. My issue with Make Some Noise is that they always try to extend the bit to the point of being not funny. They are given a funny prompt, the comedians have a fun quick witted bit...and then...it just keeps going, running the joke in to the ground until Sam finally stops it. Also it's a bit too self-referential.

Seeing this makes me finally want to get this app and engage with this show on a deeper level than YouTube shorts. I might wanna clear up some of the other things I'm watching first but still.

It's an interesting show to watch from season 1 through to now. It starts very low budget and, with the exception of the Covid remote season, you watch the budget and idea complexity just keep going up.

Season 1: we have a lightbulb “lie detector” to try and make the contestants admit some embarrassing truth. Season 7: we stole some of Jacob Wysocki’s blood.

Not to mention their own studio committing literal fraud to help Brennan Lee Mulligan get one over on Sam Reich.

Also we may have sold Sams house to the Triad

I watched a lot of shorts before getting a Dropout subscription...then was frustrated with how much of each episode I had already seen...there were no surprises left for me. 😅

This is certainly my big fear which is why Im trying to stop watching them

Dropout is the only streaming subscription I've ever had, signed up last year and it's been worth every penny.

I subscribed in January and no regrets.

Very excited for Catherine McCafferty. I asked her at Fringe '24 if we'd be seeing her on Dropout soon and she gave a cagey response like "stay tuned." Took awhile but I'm looking forward to it!

She has the perfect energy for it, especially after seeing her multiple interviews with Vic/Anna, excited!

Sam coproduces the McAffrey show you saw! So its already part of the Dropout metropolitan area, even if it's not in Dropout proper

I found Season 7 to be a bit disappointing compared to Season 5-6 so hopefully this is a return to form.
7
Qtip533 5 days ago +3
I agree. It started out great but the later half of the season was disappointing. I particularly didn’t like the “who wants to be a millionaire” and “shark tank” episodes.
3
MigratingPidgeon 4 days ago +6
Shark Tank was so close to being a good episode but I think only releasing the videos after the episode and learning who actually won a month later kind of made me feel stupid for watching the episode close to when they come out. Also think Sam should've put his foot down at the end when Vic chaos gremlin'ed the 20k budget that none of the sharks could pay and kind of screwed over Trapp who saved his money up. Not even getting into the overly parasocial nature of the episode but that's just the direction Dropout seemingly embraced.

I think the show has transitioned from being usually pretty good to being super hit or miss as they increasingly up the ante each season. They've also become far more reliant on their cast's reputations, which makes for some genuinely bad episodes. Like imagine watching the millionaire episode and having no idea who he is. It's even worse.

> Like imagine watching the millionaire episode and having no idea who he is. It's even worse. I just feel a bit weird about giving Jakob 100k Linkedin money to make short films when you have a platform and can just give the guy a show. Guess they want to have no strings to the money but still feels a bit of a waste of an actual episode.

One of the funnier shows right now.

I love Game Changer, but can we all acknowledge that Very Important People is the best Dropout show? I'm dying every episode watching that chaos.

Mmm, strongly disagree, VIP has some AMAZING moments, but it’s crazy inconsistent.

apple_kicks 4 days ago +3
Love VIP i hope they get more non studio actors and comedians in it. But also kinda wish they tried few more subtle costumes
3
slinkslowdown 5 days ago +2
I tried watching VIP about a year ago and couldn't stand it. I had just dropped in on a random episode and was just lost. Tried again from the very start recently and I'm loving it.

I love the idea of someone struggling to follow the plot of VIP.
7
slinkslowdown 4 days ago +3
Well I didn't ~get~ that Vic was playing VIP Vic and not their real self, I didn't grasp that it was like... a meta? thing? as a whole. I did watch every single Last Looks back then, though, purely because I think makeup stuff is cool.
3
AllChem_NoEcon 4 days ago +2
Oh hell yea, the Last Looks are non-negotiable for us.

slinkslowdown 4 days ago +1
It's amazing what they're able to do, mad skills across the whole makeup team.

Im actually not as much of a fan of VIP as I was hoping I would be. I think Voc is hilarious and the people that have been dressed up are hilarious, but the only two episodes I enjoyed was Zac as the muscle guy and Jake as the contestant w*****. I cant put my finger on what feels off about the show to me. It could be that the characters feel extremely forced to be funny. Instead of playing the characters naturally, they are forcing crazy after crazy after crazy. Because I really like the idea of the show, so I keep tuning in hoping for it to finally click. Its a really top notch group of people at the end of the day who do amazing in other shows!

How does one start watching this? I've seen highlights but do can I just start with this season?

Titan7771 4 days ago +4
It’s on the streaming service Dropout. You can definitely start wherever, but I think it’s worth starting from the beginning, it’s pretty damn good from the jump.

Someone more knowledgeable than me (which is not a high bar), is that Dead Meat’s Zoran Gvojic at 1:39 in the phone booth?

Looks similar, but I don't think so. Looks too short/small to be Zoran

Another dropout thread, another rinse and repeat comments.

I use an app that tells me when I get charged for monthly subs so I can keep track of them. For streaming TV I'm almost always like "why are we paying that" The exception is Dropout TV. When I see that come through, I smile. I do wish they'd start expanding out for new talent. I love everyone but...I think bringing in some fresh faces might help mix things up

Dropout is so lovely. It is edgy but not mean, quirky, s***, queer, intellectual... watching their shows is a bit like hanging with friends I actually want to hang with. Dropout is like the meme "society if we..." and it is inclusivity, sex-Ed, Trans rights, equality and creativity.  The giant sperm on smarty pants is one of the best things ever.  I paid for this for a while, I might do again...
