I read a take that basically said Simmons is coasting on unearned credibility because the popular imagination has somehow mistakenly placed KISS next to actual metal legends. Also, he told Terry Gross that if a woman wanted him to open his arms she would need to open her legs. TG told him he was being obnoxious.

She was really taken off guard by that whole interview. Then when Simmons realized after insulting her in a sexual way, that his infantile behavior wasn’t winning him any praise, he threw a snit fit and stormed out. She was sitting there like “what the hell just happened? The guy just sat down in front of the mic and immediately just… self destructed and… left…”

Depends on what you call a hit. While they were popular in the 70’s, and had a couple of well selling albums in the era, in the 1980’S they fell out of relevance, thus, the “Unmasking”, which was more of a publicity stunt. They only regained a fraction of their popularity once the original band reunited and put the make up on again. And even then, it was for the nostalgia. And even that went on way too long. Albums released post reunion hardly set the world on fire. I will admit the live shows were spectacular, but the music was secondary to “The Show”.

KISS has zero billboard No 1 hits. They have a single no 1 hit in Canada for “Shout it Out Loud” and one for Top TV Songs. Beth only ever hit #7. So no, they didn’t have a lot of hits, they just got a fair amount of radio play.

No 1 hits aren’t an indicator of success and shouldn’t measure how talented or important a band is. The Ramones never had a no.1 hit and are arguably more important than anything on the billboard charts in the last 25 years.

I was 12 once. They became popular when I was 15-19. Guys wearing makeup and playing shitty music was never my idea of cool. I think the marketing was ahead of its time though, KISS nation or whatever the f*** it was .... you're one of us, you're a cool kid (even though high heels, makeup and shitty music is not and never has been cool). I am an 80s kid, and I can’t stand KISS. I remember finally hearing their music after being well aware of what they look like, and I was disappointed. It didn’t match. I wasn’t a huge hair metal fan, but I at least got it. KISS feels to me like a band centered around their visages, and the music is incidental.

Kiss is not hair metal. I am not defending Kiss, nor am I criticizing hair metal. Kiss was big in the mid to late 70's. Hair/glam metal was more of a mid to late 80's thing. Yes, Kiss did make that music video for "Lick It Up" in the 80's where they don't have make up on and have a hair metal look, but that was an attempt to dip their toe into another genre to try to stay relevant.

I remember as a kid seeing KISS’s wild look before knowing what they sounded like. Metallica wasn’t around yet, but I expected something wilder than their crappy, pop-leaning cheesy 2nd tier, relatively tame rock’n’roll. Maybe I’m the only GenXer who feels this way, but IMO KISS has always sucked. That their marquee member turned out to be an overconfident dolt was no surprise to me at all.

Great business man/shitty person. Kiss was more of a business than a group of artists that love music. He thinks he’s a Beatle when really he’s just an old rockstar from the 70’s who had a good business. Nobody really gives a f*** about him enough for him to be given some grace for being such a douchebag.
