Yes. It's like in the 80s/90s when we didn't understand what people thought was so revolutionary about the Beatles in the 60s. It's because every other band copied the shit out of them, and even improved on their creativity. So unless you were around to see Seinfeld at the time it was live, it feels pretty mediocre now.

Regardless of the series, that's not an objective way to measure a show's quality. The scenes are written/edited to include timing for an audience reaction, and if you replace that reaction with awkward silence, it's going to be... awkwardly silent.

Last time Poland was jointly invaded by the Soviets and the Nazis. Hitler and Stalin were allies who had planned the invasion out ahead of time. The Wehrmacht and Red Army literally met in the middle and shook hands. Stalin was flabbergasted when Hitler later betrayed him.
If there’s a war in Poland again, they won’t be getting invaded from the western border this time. And if German tanks are crossing the border in to Poland, they’re likely being escorted by the Poles to help defend against Russian encroachment.
30
Nocritus3 days ago

Stalin was not flabbergastet by the betrayel, he knew Hitler would attack the Ussr at some point, he just thought they would attack later.
This was the reason, why he cooperated with him in the first place, to buy himself time to prepare.

I mean soldiers on horseback using anti tank weapons on an enemy at night when the enemy are mostly sleeping makes as much sense now as it did then...
As a kiwi I actually read about the engagement that my Polish wife told me about.
Apparently at school she was taught (by the Russian regime) that Poles were dumb enough to attack tanks front on during the day with swords.
The reality seems like they were actually fairly smart soldiers and did a shit load of damage against a far superior foe.
hey I think I have heard that recently as well.

25
Target8803 days ago
+12
There was a cavalery charge by Poland against Germany, which was successful. I am not sure if they used swords.
It was not a stupid idea, the attack was successful, and they dispersed the German infantry force they attacked.
The problem was that German armoured cars arrived with machine guns and perhaps 20mm cannon too. The poles were exposed and had to retreat, and many were killed.
Most men and the tankettes they had were held back in reserve. I would assume the anti-tank rifles that the cavalry had were held back, too. They could penetrate armoured cars and many tanks of the day.
German tanks only arrived after the battle, which was shown to German and Italian journalists
The division the infantry unit was from was not even considered a tactical retreat after the battle. The attack slowed down the advance of the Germans.
The Polish cavalry was in the process of being converted to motorised units when the war started.

I mean, "strongest military" is highly subjective. UK probably has strongest navy in a 1v1 but land army is relatively small, because why wouldn't it be, they dont really need it? France has probably the best Military industry base and has a lot of great tech, but has its focus split a lot between land, sea and air. Both have nukes but, does that count when comparing 'conventuinal' forces? UK would probably the hardest country to physically invade in Europe, but that's largely geographic amd economic not pure military strength. In terms of creating the strongest land army Germany could fairly easily eventually top UK&FRA, but that is their primary domain, which it isn't for the other two
30

The Royal Navy can reliably deploy one or two frigates, a handful off offshore patrol vessels, and one SSBN. That’s it. The SSBN deployments are getting dicey too, and definitely stretch the definition of “reliably”.
On a good day, you’ll also get a choice of maybe one SSN, one air defence destroyer, and / or a carrier that may or may not have a full complement of aircraft.
Don’t ask about amphibious capabilities or logistics. There isn’t any.
France regularly deploys their SSN fleet, keeps their SSBN fleet at sea without 6 month plus deployments, and has a properly available set of frigates and anti air warfare frigates to e***** its carrier as and when it’s deployed. The carrier also has a full complement of locally supported and highly available aircraft. Don’t ask about escorting the carrier; they can’t do it.
Even on paper the RN is in shit state but in reality it’s worse as most of the fleet is stuck in maintenance hell, or actively falling apart (Type 23s). This won’t be remedied at all with current plans. The only fix is significantly more money even than current planned increases account for.
Btw, I’m not advocating for spaffing tons of money to bloated defence companies, I don’t really care about the state of the RN. Just, you know. It definitely is not the preeminent European navy
30

European army is a pipe dream. Even right now, when it comes to general European political or economic issues, there is always someone sabotaging the whole thing over tiniest disagreements. Not even mentioning leaders and parties being bought by Russia left and right.
It would be more optimal to have a treaty to have multiple very strong and capable militaries who are able to cooperate and work together when shit hits the fan.
85

It requires stronger European integration to the point where the EU becomes the leading governing body, at least on foreign policy and trade. That seems far away, but should be the goal imo as it is the only way in which the EU can act as a respectable global power. It currently is indecisive, slow and very weak to divide-and-rule attacks by foreign powers.

A European Defense Force doesn't have to mean the disbanding of national armies.
We could follow a model similar to the US one, with the national guard and the US Army (& USAF, US Navy, etc)
The EDF's role would be strictly limited to the defense of EU territory, no out-of-area operations. A shared command structure with deployments requiring a qualified majority vote (not unanimous, we've seen how easily this can be abused)
"But that's what NATO is for"
NATO's greatest strength was never Article 5 itself, it was the credibility of the commitment behind it. No treaty automatically sends soldiers anywhere. What deterred aggression was the unshakeable belief that it would. That belief is now shaken. An alliance where a single member can cast doubt on the whole thing isn't worth the paper it's written on. The EDF isn't about replacing NATO, it's about not being left exposed if NATO continues to unravel.
I'd go even further and reinstate mandatory military service, just for the EDF. There's nothing dystopian about it, Finland has mandatory military service and they consistently rank as the happiest bunch on the planet.
A year of EDF service for young Europeans, rotating across countries, training alongside people from 27 different nations. The fastest way to forge a shared European identity is to have people from wildly different backgrounds go through something hard together and come out the other side.
But, but, what language are they going to speak?! English. The French Foreign Legion takes recruits who've never spoken a word of French and gets them functional in months. Europeans who've been immersed in English through the internet, films, games and TV shows since childhood would adapt even faster.
Funding is a tough one. Legalize cannabis across the EU. The tax revenue + savings on enforcement costs alone would be substantial. It won't cover everything, but it's a start. Even the hippies and pacifists get to contribute to rearmament.
We Europeans aren't exactly known for our bold, out of the box thinking. Plenty of people are still convinced the next 30 years will play out like the last 30. They won't and that complacency is going to cost us dearly.

Poland and Ukraine will probably grow even faster if we look at current trends in military growth.

Poland doesn't have a lot more room to grow they are spending 4.8% of GDP on defence already, and the government debt went from 55% of gdp in 2024 to projected to be 69% in 2027, which is still low comparatively but it puts into doubt how sustainable that is long term. Ukraine also probably not that much more room either unless they get more outside support and widen conscription and either way after the war is over Ukraines military needs to contract because 30% of gdp is obviously not sustainable at peace and if the war is still going in 2039 something went horribly wrong.

Obligatory:
"Once all the Germans were warlike and mean, but that couldn't happen again.
We taught them a lesson in 1918, and they've hardly bothered us since then."
*Tom Lehrer*
Having posted that, I think the Germans are doing the right thing given current circumstances.

Classic bullshit from our european governments. "We COMMIT to being SUPER GOOD at this one thing.....*by \[insert random future date\]"*

Germany has been rearming for years though. They're not just sitting around doing nothing. These plans to increase with future dates are still very important because they send the message to industry that the German rearmament will continue. Weapons manufacturers don't want to invest in a huge factory to come online in 2027 if all orders stop in 2028. The industry needs assurances that Germany's rearmament will continue.

Who's gonna pay for all of that? Because according to our chancellor Merz we are all just lazy pieces of shit who just want handouts and dont want to work.
Also who will be in this "strongest" army? I dont see young people joining when all year the gouvernment is gaslighting everyone below the age of 50y.

Well the Bundeswehr has been growing, and receiving more applications as well. You don't need to love your government to still want to keep your country and the entire union safe.

The Americans in here are saying "what could go wrong" is kind of funny. Your country is literally following Hitler's step by step guide to fascism.
