>The mountain bongo is a rare antelope known for its brown skin and distinct white stripes. With fewer than 100 individuals left in the wild, a conservancy based in Kenya is breeding them and slowly reintroducing them into the wild, with a target of 750 wild bongos by 2050. I never heard of a bongo until now. Seems cool.

This is good news! But it's hard not to make jokes with a name like that.

This song was on a CD my parents used to play in the car all the time for me when I was a kid in the 90s. Sound of my childhood right there!

This species is being saved through captive breeding programs in zoos, where they are carefully bred and then gradually reintroduced back into the wild. The main goal is to rebuild their population and prevent them from going completely extinct.

The fact they got a nickname like ghost of the forest is so cool

The “Ghost of the Forest” name itself reflects its true nature. It is extremely shy, elusive, and rarely seen in the wild. Its striped body also helps it blend into the forest, making it even harder to spot.

I’m all for this. Humans have caused so much ecological devastation, it’s our duty to try and fix what we can. Hopefully without making things worse.

That's crazy, I didn't realize how endangered they were. I literally [pet one](https://www.wildliferanchtexas.com/) on the snout recently, in Texas, from the window of my car, about 5 miles from a Super Walmart.

The eastern subspecies is endangered, the species itself is not.

That's the wild part, it's the [critically endangered one](https://www.wildliferanchtexas.com/animals?pgid=lhqtb8hv-a34a038b-e098-4ea7-8d9c-4fab92b865f5) (note the url) that I got to pet from the window of my car, 5 miles from a Super Walmart.

Cool. Apparently they breed fine in captivity.

Such wonderfully unique creatures. I hope the conservation efforts will be successful.

I remember in high school, a history teacher was arguing with us there was no such thing as a Bongo. Some of us had all read about it in the same textbook in another class earlier that day. I think he had some misplaced concern we were doing a little unfortunate stereotyping or something?

While I think this is neat but also have no faith in humanity so I think it might be a bad idea.

I had no idea these were so rare. Beautiful animals.

Don't let the rich know. A US millionaire will swoop in with suitcases of cash to pay off anyone they can. just to take a pick with the antelope corpse. Takes a weak man to shoot animals for game and the US has plenty of em.

…. Not to be a d*** or erase First Nation cultures, but is it possible that indigenous Kenyans used the term for the bongo, independent of its use on Turtle Island?
26
HadoMasterBackup May 10, 2026 +18
Or that perhaps people decided to use the term for a different animal that exhibits similar behaviour?

> It didn’t appear independently, at the same time, on 3 different continents. For a term so incredibly generic, its very very likely that it appeared independently multiple times.
10
Osiris32 May 10, 2026 +9
And have any First Nations people complained about this? Or do they not care so this outburst is meaningless?
