It should surprise nobody that Chris Carter has a long documented history of sexual harassment towards his women employees. He just seems like a total creep. His relationship with Gillian seems to have soured a lot the older and more opinionated that Gillian got - remember Gillian was only 24 years old in the pilot episode - and that doesn't feel coincidental to me.

This is quite something. I don’t know if you’ve ever actually watched any interview with him, but he comes across as pretty much the opposite of what you’re describing.
You’re talking about the person who stood up when everyone at Fox wanted to fire during her pregnancy, and who is the godfather of her first daughter. Yet your comment jumps straight to implying something pretty disgusting about him.
He and Gillian were on great terms for years. The real tension only shows up much later, around the revival, and largely over disagreements about Scully’s direction.
What your comment suggests, intentionally or not, is this idea that Gillian was somehow naive when she was younger and only later “realized” who Carter was, which just doesn’t line up with reality. It ends up painting him as some kind of villain while ignoring the actual history between them.
Criticizing the writing is completely fair. This kind of accusation isn’t.

Ryan Coogler is a very sentimental kind of guy, and I mean that in the best way. He originally created the special 70mm print of *Sinners* specifically so it could be shown in that format at his childhood movie theater (the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland) because that’s where he went to see movies growing up. He wanted to do something special for that theater, although it has since been shown in a few other theaters that are setup for the 70mm format.

I like Coogler a lot but I'm more excited about what he does in the future, if it follows the vein of what he's done already then I won't be as interested. He has so much talent and it's a shame he spent years making two Marvel movies when we could have had more things like Sinners. Black Panther wasn't even bad - it was one of the better Marvel flicks, not that that is saying a lot - I just really don't care about the Marvel stuff at all anymore.
He has a really creative vision and should be making original stuff, and I hope the success of Sinners means he gets to do it for a long time. X-Files gets a pass from me because instead of dragging the old characters back in he's going to actually bring in a new cast and X-Files always had a lot of variety week to week anyway. Be interesting to see how he works w/ TV though because most of his TV work has just been... Marvel stuff, and nothing particularly interesting.

They never flat out say it's terrible, but sometimes they hint at it. Like when Mark Hamill said he fundamentally disagreed with everything Rian Johnson wrote for Luke Skywalker. > Gellar reiterated that the script circulating isn’t the final version and pleaded with fans not to read it.
I mean, it would be like judging the original series by its pilot where Willow was played by a completely different actress. The whole point of developing a pilot is seeing what works and what doesn't.

> Carter had absolutely no idea where the show was going, or where it was supposed to go
IIRC, they never, at any point, had any idea where show would be going. They just managed to wing it and keep it plausible enough for first five (?) seasons before it (lore) started to hopelessly get off the rails.
I always liked "monster of the week" episodes way more than "lore" ones anyway, and those keps show watchable for much longer.
16
Quiddity131Mar 25, 2026

The fact is that a lot of the key early show major story decisions happened not because Chris Carter had a master plan but because Gillian Anderson became unexpectedly pregnant and he had to write around it. Skinner and the Cigarette Smoking Man become much bigger characters. Alex Krycek gets introduced as Mulder's new parter then spins off into a different role. Scully gets "abducted", something they fall back on with the story for many years afterwards.
5
MattyzooksMar 25, 2026

Yea. Season 2 sets up the mythology properly with the slow build up of the Syndicate in Krycek, Mulder's dad, clones, Mr. X, etc. before we meet the Syndicate proper in the s3 premiere.

Moving productions can often kill the spirit of the show. It’s such a huge reset: mood of the crew, familiarity of the locations, different filming rules…these background decisions often ripple into the frame.

>It ended beautifully in 2001.
If we’re making up preferred endings then I’d suggest earlier. The actual finale was not exactly a beautiful conclusion.
Midway through season 6, the post-movie mythology arc and whatnot, might have been fine…
Or the finale of season 7, which arrives shortly after the conclusion to the Samantha storyline (season 7’s “Closure”).
7
Quiddity131Mar 25, 2026
+4
Closure was the single worst episode of the show for me and a great example of the fact that Carter just made it up as he went along without caring much about continuity. The season 7 finale was pretty good though.
4
MattyzooksMar 25, 2026
+2
Season 8 finale actually isn't even that bad. Baby is born. The next gen of agents are going to continue fighting the good fight. Krycek is dead. Mulder and Scully have their happily ever after.
It sucks Mulder isn't in half of season 8 but a lot of it works and the mytharc is surprisingly not very confusing (until season 9 fucks up the whole alien replicant plot).

The Buffy reboot was directed by Oscar-w***** Chloe Zhao. Written by Lilla and Nora Zuckerman who wrote the critically acclaimed show P**** Face. Do people really still feed off these awful PR articles? How many times have we heard this same fan feeding c*** from actors or directors? "Oh it's going to be better" or "Goes back to it roots" etc etc, only to be disappointed time and time again?

I hate when celebrities I like do this. There's a possibility that she's absolutely right, but what are the odds?

It’s Ryan Coogler. The odds are certainly better than they might have been otherwise.

I trust Gillian's judgement here far more than about anyone else's. Chris Carter should never have been allowed to make more, he had already proved he couldn't do an overarching plot worth a damn, and her insisting the last season be the final absolute end was about the best idea in the whole continuance series.
Well, the monster of the week episodes weren't bad either.

As long as the showrunner sits down and pre-plans the actual backstory and central mystery and sticks to it, I'm hopeful.

".......she had had “a few conversations” with the *Sinners* filmmaker, which could lead to her reprising her role of Agent Dana Scully."
“He’s such a cool guy and so talented,” Anderson said of Coogler, adding that “the pilot script is really good.”
So reading between the lines, home girl basically wants a job and is sucking up to hopefully get a scrap.
/sorry, i like her but not much to see here.

I don't generally disagree, but the X Files is such an open and broad concept (a small faction in a government agency investigates paranormal events) that I don't mind reuse of the label. As long as they don't get bogged down by the confusing ET conspiracy lore that made the original X Files a bit too dense from time to time, and instead focus on creating a new and more relevant primary conspiracy lore... I'll be pretty happy.
The people involved with this give me a lot of hope.

Hollywood has been out of ideas for decades.
It’s why reboots, sequels, and spinoffs make up 80 percent of what is in theatres.

Well it's not a very specific idea, it's basically just scifi cops.
It's not like they'll be redoing the same overarching plot points or monsters of the week, the ideas will be new.

Everything Ryan does is about race. And, I know Ill get downvotes, but I just cant be arsed with any more blunt American politics in tv shows and movies. I want an escape from the horrors of the world, not a constant reminder every time I change the channel.
You can all hate me now. I accept that I am in the minority.

Nah I'm with you, I want a show about supernatural shit, not supernatural shit being an allegory for racism in modern America. I also accept that I'm the minority after sinners but I don't think it's unreasonable criticism, and it's pretty laughable that some folks are accusing you of racism for having such an opinion.

The agents will both be people of colour in an organization that is mostly run by white men.
The first monster of the week will be a white man that transforms into a monster but in reality, he’s more of a monster when he’s in his human form because he’s racist.

Oh you want an escape from the horrors of the world?
Tune in next week when human breeding torso is rolled out from under the bed in a creepy farmhouse to be raped by her sons. It’s a laugh riot!
Need something a little less zany? Coming up, the ancient stretchy bile-nest humanoid that eats livers to survive is here, and the economy drives him to menial janitorial work! Sad!
Oops, it’s Cancer! Our hero Dana Scully is diagnosed with terminal cancer, but a wacky turn of events means that it goes into remission when she reimplants a microchip that was forcibly inserted into her during a hilarious prior kidnapping/abduction event!

The two leads for this new series need to be really good whoever they are. Those earlier reboot seasons were disappointing. Until they start filming this I’d not be so confident it’s going to happen though.
The fact they keep trying to bring X Files back (every 10 yrs or so) proves the franchise has a degree of momentum and interest attached to it. I think there can be a bright future for a proper high quality X Files sequel. Hopefully it happens and it’s actually really good.

I agree with the other comments here. Carter just botched Scully and I’m still kind of fuming over the last couple of seasons which kind of undermined her character. If she’s got a script that means she might make an appearance which would mean I’m all in here.

Sorry, gonna have some major doubts. I loved the original x-files, but there is no way they will recapture what made is special. A combination of monster of the week, cool conspiracy lore, and most of all, the chemistry between mulder and scully. I said it before, it should not be called the x-files, it will be compared to the original and fail. Instead, they should have done a spinoff set in the x-files universe. My idea is to have them work for one of the many secret factions on the show, a sort of scp/mib group that does the same thing as the x-files, but their goal is to hide, capture and exploit these anomalies for the organization they work. They are neutral to bad guys, who will do anything to complete their objective. Would be interesting to see things from the other groups perspective.
