Global Streaming Subscription Revenue Tripled In Five Years, Poised to Top $200 Billion by 2030: Price increases have helped as major players are looking toward "extracting greater value from existing audiences," an Ampere Analysis survey finds

Posted by Neo2199

>**Global streaming subscription revenue surpassed $150 billion for the first time in 2025**, according to a new survey from Ampere Analysis, which highlighted that as “a major milestone” for the subscription market. **And streaming subscription revenue will hit $202 billion by 2030, up 29 percent,** “**as streamers shift focus from subscriber growth to price increases and ad-supported tiers,**” the research firm predicted on Monday. >“While international expansion remains an important driver of the market, **platforms are increasingly focusing on monetization through price increases and the rollout of ad-supported tiers, particularly in mature markets**,” Ampere emphasized in its latest report. “As ad-free subscriber numbers stabilize, hybrid subscription and advertising models are playing an increasingly important role in revenue growth.” * **Global streaming subscription revenue jumped 14 percent in 2025 to reach a total of $157.1 billion. That amounts to a tripling over the past five years from $50 billion in 2020.** “The international expansion of global streaming services, the rollout of ad-supported tiers, and consistent price increases across major platforms have contributed to the increase,” Ampere noted. * **The U.S. remained the largest driver of the streaming sector last year, accounting for 50 percent of global streaming subscription revenue in 2025**, according to the research firm. “**Netflix is the largest contributor in the U.S. market, with revenues up by 14 percent in 2025 following an across-the-board price increase at the start of the year**,” Ampere explained. “In more crowded markets such as North America and Western Europe, the next phase of expansion is increasingly driven by ad-tier subscriptions.” **"Extracting greater value from existing audiences"** Remember Rule of Acquisition 3: **Never spend more for an acquisition than you have to.**

"Extracting greater value from audiences" just makes me cringe. What a horrible, if accurate, way to put it.

It’s such a disgusting phrase, but it shows exactly how they think. It’s not enough that revenue has tripled, there’s even more “value” just waiting to be extracted

While shutting down the traditional studios to put them in low cost centers. The strikes only helped the top line.

This is not late stage. This is the stage.

Seriously… the people paying should be extracting value. This is just mind numbingly upside down.

More ads, less shows, **longer times between seasons of those shows with fewer episodes** AND higher price. Yayyyy.....

slawnz Mar 31, 2026 +1
But… but I thought they were forced to raise prices because of increased costs? No? /s

"Extracting greater value from audiences" makes me want to cancel subscriptions and find an outdoor hobby, f*** this techy hell bullshit, they make everything absolute shit. Actors and artists are not getting one cent of that greedy money grab it all goes to investors and executives leaching off both the artists and the audiences. They want to replace the artist with AI, and they want to make the audience unemployed using AI, they want crazy ass shit that has no sustainable model of functionality and they will break society. F*** all this shit, we need to reset the tech industry, pull the plug and hard reset this shit.

Outdoor hobbies are great. You should find one anyway. Helps mind, body, and spirit.

gotta love the term "extraction" when it has anything to do with human beings. The x makes it sound sexier.

So everyone claiming they canceled after each hike are.... full of shit?!

Listnook (and even less the people who comment) is an extremely tiny niche of the real world, literally nothing said here has any significance in reality. And yes, probably 80% of those comments were also full of shit but even if they were all true, it would not even be visible

lupin43 Mar 31, 2026 -1
Does this also include the infinity times I see people on listnook say that nothing said on Listnook matters or is real

I'm sure they're making massive revenue off of the people that subscription model pricing was made for. The "set it and forget it" crowd. Those that sign up for a subscription, forget about it, then can charged forever.

Tossawaysfbay Mar 30, 2026 +8
Which might be true for a handful of accounts. Maybe even a million or two. Netflix has 300+ million subscribers. And they keep growing. Every quarter.

NoExcuse4OceanRudnes Mar 31, 2026 +1
You think people aren't watching these streaming services?
1
RevoOps Mar 30, 2026 +8
If you sell something for 10 bucks to 100 people you make 1000. If you now sell the same thing for 20 bucks and 45 people start writing snide comments about how you are a moron and they will never buy from you again, you are now making 1100 from the 55 people that don't give a shit.

I got rid of Netflix something like 6 increases ago. But I have no illusions that I was a trendsetter or anything.

I remember everyone was gonna canceled Netflix due to password sharing look how that turned out 😂😂😂

bannedagainomg Mar 30, 2026 +5
There is a reason things like this is tested in a smaller market before its pushed worldwide. When markets such as Canada, spain and NZ accepted it and they gained users there was little reason to believe it would backfire in UK, US and rest of EU. No matter how delusional people were here at that time, probably mostly free users that made most noise anyway.

rcanhestro Mar 31, 2026 +2
odds are many stopped watching, but the password cracking was legit a genius move. it doesn't affect those that didn't shared, so those didn't noticed, and for groups, let's say a group of 4, all it takes is for 1 of them to remain subscribed for Netflix to break even. if 2 of them get their own subscriptions, Netflix wins, not just increased revenue, but reduced expenses, since they no longer need to provide the service to the other 2.
2
NoExcuse4OceanRudnes Mar 31, 2026 +1
> odds are many stopped watching The ones who weren't paying in the first place lol

I did cancel cos of this and the pricing, and now we sail the high seas. But my boomer mum signed up 🙃

I have Netflix only because it’s free with another thing I have that’s also free. Apple TV is the only service I’m really interested in paying for.

I have plex, i pay for nothing

Hopefully you were able to get your storage situation figured out because if you need to buy more HDD's, you'll definitely be paying for it. In the literal and figurative sense.

I only pay for AppleTV so my MIL can watch her shows while going through chemo. I will pay until she demands that I stop. Everything else is easily found with the new left-clicker d******* feature.

I was a massive fan of netflix when it arrived in the UK many years ago. I stopped pirating overnight when it appeared (same with spotify). Since then the enshittification of video streaming knows no bounds. Guess what, I bailed on video streaming and am happily back on the high seas. But spotify? I'm still a loyal subscriber and have been for nearly 20 years.

Extract greater value from customers.. hmm.. prices go up?
2
Silver-End9570 Mar 30, 2026 +2
Start investing into physical media folks. Only way to stop them "extracting" additional value out of you is to own the media you consume as much as humanly possible.
2
GhostGamer_Perona Mar 30, 2026
With anime that’s a quick way to go broke though. It’s not easy to find modern series for c****

rudebii Mar 30, 2026 +2
don't spend it all in one place. I have a feeling lot of the folks are done being "extracted" and are setting sails for the high seas.
2
DeLongestTom182 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Time to raise the black flag and sail the mighty seas. 🏴‍☠️

Don’t worry more adds and more price increases are coming

"Extracting" lol bend over and open wide

Snakepli55ken Mar 30, 2026 +1
The amount of people I know who are now ditching some streaming services for the high seas increases every day. I know I’m slowly canceling all of mine. They are way overpriced now.
1
RevoOps Mar 30, 2026 +1
Want to know how expensive streaming subscriptions will get? Google howuch a cable package cost in like 2005 than apply inflation to it.  That is how much people are willing to pay for entertainment and that is how much they will try to charge you.
1
keving87 Mar 30, 2026 +1
It tripled because the amount of services to subscribe to has grown, and each service keeps raising prices. Funny how that works huh?
1
DearthNadir75 Mar 30, 2026 +1
Yeah I sail the high seas for any and all media I want or need. I'm not giving another f****** dollar to these greedy a****** corporations. If I could download food and a car I'd be set.

When do consumers get to ‘extract greater value’ from the services they pay for? Cost always rising without the service improving, pretty bum deal.

LadderEffective3458 Mar 31, 2026 +1
God I can't wait to have my value extracted.

tcote2001 Mar 31, 2026 +1
It’s called price gauging not “extracting value from customers”
1
Obrusnine Mar 31, 2026 +1
It's always about extracting value instead of providing it with these people. That's why I cut them all off and started using a Debrid service instead. They'll never see another dime from me.

I cancelled my 27 year old netflix account last year and I haven't missed it at all. The netflix it started as was a completely different experience. Getting obscure art films in the mail was amazing. The seas have called me back. I'll leave them again if they keep shit up on a platform and let me download it to my phone for when I don't have connection, but until then I am not going to subscribe to shit anymore. One fee, one time, I own it.

I’m looking to stopping many if not all of mine. Just not worth it anymore, quality dropped down massively.

I canceled everything. I went full clean state mode. HBO might be the only thing I get back. I’m over this and everyone else should be as well.

EndersInfinite Mar 30, 2026
surely this means they are producing more high quality content filmed in the US? Right?
0
Sad-Week6040 Mar 30, 2026
People will keep on paying, so why wouldn't they? I've canceled Netflix after the news of another price hike coming. Gotta speak with your wallet.
0
AvailableReporter484 Mar 30, 2026
And Netflix still can’t produce good content to save its f****** life. They’re on thin ice with me. I’ll only pay so much for Seinfeld reruns before I tap out.

OkStrategy685 Mar 30, 2026 -2
Someone has to pay for it or none of us will get anything.
