The Khwarezmian Empire (which ironically included modern day Iran) comes to mind. Ghengis Khan sent diplomats to ask about trading with them. The Khwarezemians imprisoned them. Khan sent another party, they were beheaded and had their beards shaved (an act of huge disrespect to the Mongols).
Well, instead of getting a new trading ally the Mongols invaded and absolutely obliterated their entire empire in what wikipedia refers to as "one of the bloodiest conquests in human history" all because the Shah thought it'd be funny to shave off some beards.

Some have finally started started to say they don't support trump, but they still watch fox news, are still republican and have no problem with all the other republic politicians who support trump. They'll try to pull the 'I didn't vote for him this time around' to which I follow up with, 'Did you vote for Kamala then?" and you damn well know the answer. It's all such disingenuous bullshit. They've ridden the ride before, they know the ups and downs, have the fox news talking points ready to go, moan about prices but spend longer talking about pronouns. But now, they're all feeling it. Wifey warns me not to stir things up, but if they mention the stock market just once, the price at the pump, I'm rubbing it in, hard. And a few "what happened with the Epstein stuff?" But their 401k's... they used to proudly announce how much the market's up, how much they've made. But no-one's been on vacation abroad yet. They're all waiting for the dems to do something/anything they can point to. But it's not happening, and they're not happy.

The Roman Empire in 408 decided to go full racist, had its top general (who was *only* half roman) murdered and went full genocide against all germanics living in the empire.
These consisted of a) Women and children b) Their husbands and fathers, which formed most of the army.
Immediately, the empire lost most of its army, that now coalesced around Alaric, a failed goth rebel who had just been beaten the year before, and now found itself leader of the largest army in Europe. A year later, the city of Rome was sacked by that army for the first time in 800 years.
So yes, shit like this by racists has happened before.

The irony is, the US *does* have plenty of oil, but that doesn't do much to the price. Trump for some strange reason thought affecting global supply elsewhere in the world wouldn't matter much at home, or that the effect would be only brief, because the US has "energy independence".
It totally does matter. He's being schooled on what a global market commodity is.
You can't take about 20% of the supply out of the market without having a huge effect on prices everywhere. That same barrel of oil produced in Texas yesterday is now worth more, and costs more when you refine it into gasoline and sell it at retail even if nothing about your production or refining system in Texas has changed.
The only way to manage otherwise would be if the US could somehow suddenly magically replace 20% of global supply. That's a hard "no" on a timescale that would influence things in a major way.
The most creative interpretation of his massive f-up is that Trump thought "we'd make lots of money" (i.e. oil companies in the US) even if he did screw up supply in the Persian Gulf a bit.
Now the prices, both crude and refined, are frozen in for months and there *will* be broader negative economic effects from that, globally, especially with actual production and delivery facilities damaged in the Gulf region that will take time to fix even if ship traffic goes back to some semblance of normal immediately, which it isn't yet.
TL;DR: Donald Trump did not learn much about global commodity markets when supposedly studying at Wharton. This is exactly what people would have predicted would happen for decades.

Listened to a podcast about some navy guys talking about it. As awesome firepower as a carrier strike group has, it only has x amount of interceptors and has to be resupplied. When dealing with drone swarms they expend them quickly, when low on supplies they have to return to a safe port to get those big missiles in quantity, that's pretty far away because Iran has proved they can reach out pretty far.
So they can't spend a lot of time on station, and they do not want to get too close.

Interestingly, i too was listening to a podcast on the subject where they were highlighting that the aircraft carriers are no longer the pinnacle of naval warfare. Despite the enormous cost and length of time to build them, they can be taken out with military drones costing a fraction of the price. War has evolved a lot in the past 5 years.

If only the Military wasn't beholden to the military industrial complex! They might have tried to buy some of those interceptor drones that Ukraine has been using since last year which work pretty well on Shahed drones and cost a fraction of an interceptor missile (and a lot easier to build).

It's honestly wild how little the US military has apparently learned from the Ukrainians, vis-a-vis modern warfare. I'd contend that US infantry/mechanized elements would get absolutely mulched on the battlefields of Ukraine, their strength is overwhelming air-superiority that's proven to be incredibly expensive and vulnerable to supply crunches.
It's so embarrassing being American these days.

I began writing on the Russian invasion some weeks before it happened, and have continued to advocate for supporting Ukraine for a variety of reasons, one of which is the observation and intelligence opportunities it would provide. 14
ArcaneDemenseMar 31, 2026

Actually the carriers themselves are just fine. The issue is what they put on the carrier. You could very easily retrofit Ford class carriers to take a large drone complement, or deploy an e***** boat to do that job depending on the tradeoffs you wanted to make. The problem is that for political and MIC reasons plus having morons currently in charge the US has not made those choices.

Why are we still doing things the insanely expensive way? We spend billions on giant ships with high tech weapons, Iran slaps together some $1000 drones and we run away.

98

We're seeing something that happens regularly over military history. Nations prepare for war based on the last war, but until shit hits the fan, nobody really knows how the changes in technology will affect the way war works. Just like industrial-scale use of artillery in WWI, air space superiority and bombing in WWII, and the shift to close quarters/urban combat over the Iraq war, we're now seeing the expansion of the impact of drones that we already saw guiding the conflict in Ukraine.
The reality is that we do have a pretty remarkable arsenal of drones, but the asymmetric nature of this conflict means we can't put them to the same kind of use. Using a drone to intercept another drone isn't nearly as easy as using a drone to target a large, slow ship or infrastructural target, and half the benefit of those drones is that you can keep them anywhere so you don't need large, targetable depots for your arsenal.
Drones seem to be shaping up to give a truly massive homefield advantage that invading forces simply don't have the tools or tactics to neutralize yet, but who knows if that will change in the near future.
132
SunshineSt8ReprobateMar 31, 2026

Except for the fact that the war in Ukraine really dictated what the new gameplan for war should look like, and we're copying none of their strategies. No low-cost interceptor drones to take these Shaheds down, no protective netting to protect aircraft left on open runways, and no concept whatsoever about what we've blindly stormed into.
Our entire military industrial complex is designed with high-dollar asset production in mind instead of making more pragmatic choices about what resources really do the job efficiently. All bling, no basics.
We're truly being led by some of the dumbest f****** people alive, thanks for that MAGA.

The issue is that they don't actually want him gone.
The Republicans in Congress are still very afraid of Trump. People who are turned on by him and his machine don't do very well. Nobody knows what's going to happen at the end of Trump's term, and even the people who are against him in principle are clinging on to the tiger as hard as they can and hoping they can wait him out.
Meanwhile, it's a porkbarrel feast for grifters. They requisitioned $200bn for DHS in the OBBBA and you know tons of that money went to contractors. So they can keep their heads down, get incredibly wealthy, shift all the blame onto Trump, and hold out until he's gone.
Personally I think that's part of the benefit of the "unitary executive" idea, from the perspective of Congress. In principle they should be upset that he's usurping their power, but in practice they can correct any particular imbalance with legislation any time they like, and in the meantime, Trump is taking on all the authority and thus all the blame. It's why there's been no vote about the Iran war: so long as there's no vote, it's Schrodinger's issue. If it goes badly they can blame Trump and if it goes well, they can say they supported it by not holding a vote to block it.

Hi, liberal here
Republicans: they tied themselves to Trump, in a desperate bid to maintain power and now no longer control their own destiny. Record numbers of Republican lawmakers are retiring or not running in 2026. It’s like the end of Titanic.
Democrats: people always wonder why most Democrats are quiet or just plain weak, but it’s because they simply want to go back to how things were before Trump. They stymie any real progressive change in order to keep their corporate donors.
So…as typical in American politics, the Conservatives re-brand all the time and Democrats hope their re-brand is so awful it gets them elected. There is no leftist party in the wings looking to demonstrably change American political culture for good.
Lastly, Americans have goldfish memories. They’ll punish Republicans here, but after 4 years of trying to clean up the mess, Americans will get impatient and vote in whatever new iteration of the Republican Party comes back in 2032, smarter and more hateful than ever.

Westminster (assuming you're from the UK) also has a pretty good track record of evolving and self reforming when it needed to. Glorious revolution, the 1832 reform, Salisbury Convention, the Devolutions.
Westminster is a breathing, living institution. Americans like to unchange the constitution when Birtain has an uncodified and not despite, but because of that felxibility it bends then reforms when needed. The US constituion will break due to its rigidness.

America is just too proud. They have their constitution and their founding fathers, they're holy, America is best, case closed, no reforms needed, DemocratsTM vs. RepublicansTM forever.
Nowadays their constitution is being eroded by the minute, but they don't care or realize, because they're too high on the "America is best" supply.
America is cooked and most astonishingly, cooked itself.

In a way though he was elected on a platform very similar to what he is doing. Granted lots of people voted on single issues and are now surprised Pikachu's but most of it was out in the open and even with Iran, everyone on the left knew that he was the most likely one to use military force on top of being unstable and an overall piece of shit.
Isn't the American electorate responsible for the situation? I'm not even sure removing him is popular enough. With Putin they obviously rig elections and going against him is an easy way to get tossed out of a window. Here we kind of just tossed ourselves out of a window after having full access to all the information we needed. It shows that access to information is not enough when people aren't able to understand that information.
Hopefully the world can isolate us as soon as possible and move on, it will be a tough breakup but nothing is going to improve from here on out in the USA. It will just get worse as the impacts pile up from the current regime gutting education and social services and voting access. Expect us to become more and more like Russia or a theocratic but nuclear armed nation ironically like Iran.

This is exactly what would happen.
The whole aim here, alongside our tendency to pamper, support, and obey Israel, is to *isolate the US* from the rest of the world, for who-knows-what reason. Whoever is pulling trumps puppet strings wants America to have its own kind of Brexit. Our leadership, if you can call it that, also wants to weaken the rest of the world as we do so.
The perfect way to pamper Israel, isolate ourselves, AND weaken the greater world economy? F*** up the Hormuz. If somehow, impossibly, we managed to sweep in, topple Iran, and then control the strait, I absolutely guarantee you the very next move the orange shitgibbon would pull would be to start charging everyone exorbitant tolls, and outright blocking passage for others based on no good f****** reason at all. He's already trying to call it the Strait of Trump. All he ever wants is power and control, and no amount will ever be enough.

The problem is that Trump has already proven that placation only lasts a matter of days, at best. He hasn't got the long-term memory or impulse control for diplomacy, and that's without throwing in his malignant narcissism and antisocial personality disorder.
Our biggest problem is that we're in no-man's land when it comes to international trade, thanks to Brexit.

The irony of telling the UK to "go get their own oil" after we blew up the global supply chain is staggering. Everyone was getting their oil just fine until this administration decided to drop bombs during active negotiations. To start an illegal war that destabilizes the entire world’s energy market and then tell our closest allies "not my problem" is the height of diplomatic malpractice. We are effectively telling our friends that the U.S. is no longer a partner, but a liability.
