Good Cop / Bad Cop

Posted by trycuriouscat

Perhaps this is pointless, but I just watched the show Good Cop / Bad Cop on Netflix and I just need to sing its praises. Unfortunately it has already been cancelled. Still, I absolutely loved this show. Stars Leighton Meester as a police detective in small town Washington (state), with Clancy Brown as her police chief father. The series title kind of seems to refer to her and her estranged brother who her father brings on as the town's second detective. But there is really no "bad cop". Meester is the main reason to watch this. She's sweet and funny and just darn lovable. Brown is, of course, as good as ever. The brother, played by Luke Cook, is fine. His character is eccentric and perhaps on the spectrum (thought that is never stated). Their sibling interactions are generally quite fun. Another nice thing is that the "crime of the week" isn't always a murder. Sometimes it is, but in a least a few episodes it is not. The whole show is generally very "light"; well except for the final episode! The small-town vibe and whimsical humor makes me compare it to Resident Alien. The supporting cast (beyond the main three) is not as strong as in RA, but they're fine. The show originally aired last year on The CW. Who knew they even had new shows still! Obviously it did not find it's audience. Quite the shame. I haven't found a recent show this fun since RA, I think. Anyways, maybe give it a shot.

man i keep seeing shows like this get axed way too early and it drives me crazy. was delivering food in this small washington town last month and the whole vibe reminded me exactly what you're describing - that quirky small town energy where everyone knows each other's business but in a weirdly charming way. leighton meester really doesn't get enough credit for her range after gossip girl. she's got this natural warmth that makes you root for her character even when she's just doing mundane detective work. clancy brown is one of those actors who elevates everything he touches, so pairing them as father-daughter makes total sense. the fact they didn't lean into the obvious "good cop bad cop" trope with the siblings actually sounds refreshing - most procedurals would've hammered that angle to death. gonna check this out tonight since you mentioned it has that resident alien vibe. need something lighter after binge-watching too much dark stuff lately. typical cw though, canceling shows right when they find their groove.

I enjoyed the show as well.. The brother reminds me of Flula Borg..  There's another good cop show with Tony Danza but that as well got cancelled

I'm a basic b**** who loves me some procedurals as comfort viewing, so this sounds right up my alley. Will definitely be giving it a view.

I enjoyed it, I wish they could find someone else to produce it since CW is pretty much done with scripted programming, they buy it from elsewhere when they need it.
