"Vanderhorst had been under the influence of MDMA and **three litres of vodka** she had consumed on the night of the offence..." 3 liters of Vodka!? I'm an alcoholic (sober since '96) with a very high tolerance level and my daily consumption was 1 liter a day. When I checked into rehab my bac was .48; I can't imagine 3.
849
h_virus Mar 25, 2026 +282
Lmao 🤣 I would be dead after the first liter. I think there’s no way she had 3 liters, she’d be dead or in the ER fighting for her life.
282
gartho009 Mar 26, 2026 +54
I bet they confused pints with liters. Those sidecars will get you fucked up, three will send you to space, but it's at least physiologically believable that someone had three.
54
snowmuchgood Mar 26, 2026 +8
I was thinking it’d be premixed, even 3 pints is enough to knock out your above average man.
8
sniggity_snax Mar 26, 2026 +42
Yeah I have had drinking problems in the past and theres no way she had 3 liters... Especially when on Mdma!!! That usually makes a person want to drink *less* alcohol not more
42
captainchristianwtf Mar 26, 2026 +10
I've been sober for a long time, but back in the day rolling made me drink like a fish and have a super-human alcohol tolerance. Doesn't feel great when the roll wears off though
10
Chang_Daddy2 Mar 25, 2026 +218
It would be 3L’s (of premixed Vodka drink). Extremely common in Australia. Usually around 5% in a 330ml bottles or 375ml cans. So roughly 8 or 9 drinks which is pretty standard on a night out.
218
Mysterious_Cow_2100 Mar 25, 2026 +14
When I go out I have like 2-5 drinks… I’m never going to get drunk enough to vandalize sculptures! D:
14
TurelSun Mar 26, 2026 +78
I mean... she stuck googly eyes on it. Are you saying you don't think you'd ever get drunk enough to stick googly eyes on something?
78
Ill_Reading_5290 Mar 26, 2026 +78
I don’t even need alcohol to stick googly eyes on things.
78
WolfGangSwizle Mar 26, 2026 +17
On our walk back from the bars we walked through a park and thought it’d be funny to stack the picnic tables. We stacked them 8 high and it stayed like that for days. A good buzz with some friends makes you just want to get into some tomfoolery occasionally.
17
Acheloma Mar 26, 2026 +16
The net on the basketball hoop at the local park was all ratty and needed to be repaired bc it was honestly gross and no longer functioned. One time my friends and I got drunk and were walking through the park and went past the basketball hoop. I felt like I could climb it and grab the net, so I did climb it but then cohldnt get the net down so my friend tossed me a pocket knife and I cut it down while they all cheered and then my friend wore it on his head like a hat and we called him the pirate king.
16
GozerDGozerian Mar 26, 2026 +10
I know empirically that I can get so drunk that I would think it’s a good idea to stick googly eyes on things. It was a whole phase. Back when people got newspapers and there was a comic strip section, I would cut out oddly worded panels from them and apply them in random places as well. That was often done soberly.
10
Own_Inevitable2493 Mar 26, 2026 +6
You were comic strip Banksy
6
Baeolophus_bicolor Mar 26, 2026 +3
Funny. I used to cut those out too. Just one panel. Or I would cut the words from one panel, and put them on another pic for comedic effect.
3
Alive-Resolution7844 Mar 26, 2026 +3
I mean, she was clearly carrying a big pair of googly eyes around with her. She was gonna stick them on that sculpture no matter how drunk she was.
3
Mysterious_Cow_2100 Mar 26, 2026 +2
Correct, I am a law abiding citizen and lack whimsy.
2
Chang_Daddy2 Mar 26, 2026 +4
When I go out I have about 16-20 drinks… we are all built different.
4
Mysterious_Cow_2100 Mar 26, 2026 +7
This is true, but you might also have a drinking problem lol. Also the sheer expense?? I don’t go out much anymore but I paid $15 for a single whiskey sour with well liquor. Wtf mate?
7
Chewed420 Mar 25, 2026 +63
No one can drink 3 liters of vodka in one day. Consuming such a massive quantity would cause extreme alcohol poisoning, likely resulting in coma, coma, permanent brain damage, or death. The body cannot metabolize alcohol at that volume.
63
Boring_and_sons Mar 25, 2026 +108
It's that second coma that really gets you.
108
suppository_wisdom Mar 26, 2026 +10
Coma, comma, coma
10
bandswithothers Mar 26, 2026 +5
Coma, comma, chameleon 🎶
5
Chewed420 Mar 25, 2026 +24
ya watch out for that second one! 😅
24
jrob321 Mar 26, 2026 +2
Look at this one over here doubling up on their comas.
2
winky9827 Mar 26, 2026 +2
Better than joining the triple coma club.
2
Lirael_Gold Mar 26, 2026 +9
They're not drinking it all at once, and you'd be surprised what the liver can get used to (until it breaks horribly) Also depends on the ABV % of the drink in question, at my worst I'd get through a liter of gin (in sips) by about 3pm, then coast through the rest of the day until I got home and then drank the 2nd liter whilst playing games/watching movies. That made me sleepy enough to fall asleep. 3 would would have been questionable, but I can believe that someone has done it and not died. (also to be clear, when I was at that level I would have gladly died if I could afford a 3rd bottle, it was grim) (the stroke I had was the wake up call and I've been 2 years sober, hooray)
9
UCLA_FB_SUCKS Mar 25, 2026 +17
At .48, you can almost say you had blood in your alcohol stream
17
Far-Adhesiveness-740 Mar 25, 2026 +55
Damn, I’m double proud of you.  Proud that you got up to .48 and proud that you quit 30 years ago.
55
Ditka85 Mar 25, 2026 +36
The scary part is that I drank it at home, decided I needed rehab (again) drove myself to the hospital, completed all the paperwork and checked myself in. The nurse, who I'd met during an earlier stint, was shocked that I drove there.
36
___coolcoolcool Mar 25, 2026 +11
Wow, you were that functional at 0.48?? Our bodies can do amazing things sometimes.
11
missyanntx Mar 26, 2026 +6
That's the fun part, we're surrounded by functional alcoholics and don't even know it. /daughter of a functional nice tempered alcoholic //and even the best case alcoholics f*** their kids up
6
Ar_Ciel Mar 25, 2026 +5
I remember old records of British nobility where some lords went through CASES of port or sherry a day.
5
Somestunned Mar 25, 2026 +3
She deserves a medal not a conviction.
3
d0ctorzaius Mar 25, 2026 +12
Yeah unless she vomited a lot of that up, I don't believe it. In my binge drinking days the most I ever drank would be ~30 drinks across a whole day. 3 Liters of vodka is like 67 shots, basically impossible to be conscious with that on board.
12
008Zulu Mar 25, 2026 +8
Here in Australia we have a saying; Go big or go home.
8
Kaffe-Mumriken Mar 25, 2026 +14
Where do you fit googly eyes in?
14
008Zulu Mar 25, 2026 +23
Wherever we can put them.
23
Small_Bee_9523 Mar 25, 2026 +6
As it should be.
6

30 years is a long time, not easy stuff
3
GenitalFurbies Mar 26, 2026 +3
Assuming standard 40% that's 27 standard drinks. That's Andre the Giant territory. Something must be lost in translation here.
3
TheWhiteManticore Mar 25, 2026 +4
Literally replaced blood with 20% ethanol, the lady is an HPLC 🗿
4
SteveJobsBlakSweater Mar 25, 2026 +6
🤜🤛 I’m close to two years sober now and my peak was about 1L of the hard stuff a day too. 3 is simply… not possible.
6
ailish Mar 26, 2026 +1
Riiight? I'm not quite sure how she's alive, tbh.
1
Im_Pronk Mar 26, 2026 +1
.42 while standing right here!
1
i_sell_you_lies Mar 26, 2026 +1
Just saw in another comment it was 3l of a premix -- 5% or so (my money's on 14-20%)  So let's say that's 3.5ish bottles of wine ... which is a lot, but if it were white, I could have done that in a night...  probably would have too.   Congrats on your sobriety - 3.5 for me
1
sm9k3y Mar 25, 2026 +1205
Did they remove the googly eyes with a sledge hammer and chisel? And I love that she is "going to reduce" her substance use... haha so just MDNA and like 1 liter of vodka? And despite all that, the googly eyes were brilliant!
1205
510Goodhands Mar 25, 2026 +352
Exactly. They probably had double stick foam tape on the back, which could be removed with a piece of string and some adhesive remover, doing no harm to the sculpture at all. I sort of doubt that she had a big tube of superglue with her. ETA, someone posted a link to a video on the sun newspaper site. She is indeed brandishing a bottle of superglue; so the finish of the sculpture probably was damaged, it shouldn’t have cost more than a few hundred dollars to repair it.
352
BaLance_95 Mar 26, 2026 +26
Heck, the googly eyes are an improvement
26
sinsofangels Mar 26, 2026 +8
They should make it a tradition in the city for drunks to keep tacking the googly eyes back on (with an easy to remove option) like how Glaswegians keep putting the traffic cone on that statue's head.
8
Shounenbat510 Mar 26, 2026 +7
I agree. I don’t really care for the statue, but the eyes give it some personality.
7
mighij Mar 25, 2026 +78
After 3 litres of wodka and extacy she was more likely to sniff it then use it.
78
theycallmejugzy Mar 26, 2026 +3
I like wanilla wodka.
3
RedNewzz Mar 26, 2026 +67
I think you don't exactly understand what goes into a finish on a piece of artwork like that. You don't just hit it with a couple spray coats of Rustoleum. I do find the case and the intention of the woman fairly hilarious, but property damages property damage and she got caught so fair is fair.
67
510Goodhands Mar 26, 2026 +49
I know exactly what it takes, and I have done it myself. Certainly won’t cost $100,000, or whatever the article said. They don’t need to repaint the entire sculpture just to fix a couple of divots. Ask any automotive body worker.
49
Jivesauce Mar 26, 2026 +49
The article says that the sculpture cost $136,000, not the repair. She was fined $2000.
49
anaemic Mar 26, 2026 +16
$2000 dollarbucks as well, so $1389 / €1211 / £1050.
16
RedNewzz Mar 26, 2026 +10
No one said it costs $100k to repair. And though a good auto body guy is indeed a wizard, this isn't a kandy-kolored tangerine flake streamline baby and might just have a process unique to the artist.
10
C5Jones Mar 26, 2026 +5
It's not a *what?*
5
norunningwater Mar 26, 2026 +6
Most confident "what? Oh yeah I've made public art statues I know what they're made out of" I've ever seen
6
dafones Mar 26, 2026 +64
For what it’s worth, other news articles state that she used super glue. https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/38627247/woman-convicted-googly-eyes-sculpture-blue-blob/ So she probably did f*** up the artwork.
64
cscottnet Mar 26, 2026 +13
There is a solvent for super glue.
13
qrs136 Mar 26, 2026 +29
It ruins the finish.

One and a quarter L on either side and rolling in the middle

Umami_Tsunamii Mar 25, 2026 +1250
It’s funny how Australian government can pursue this case against a 20 year old that made everyone laugh, but turn a blind eye to the groups targeting and nearly killing members of the gay community.
1250
PauL__McShARtneY Mar 26, 2026 +290
The Australian government is not likely to go after its own police force any time soon, but I like the way you're thinking.
290
Affectionate-Set952 Mar 25, 2026 +115
NGL. It looked better with those eyes on
115
succubus-slayer Mar 25, 2026 +210
Oh Australia, where they let a guy go free who secretly recorded 150 women in the bathroom, and got caught peeping on another by security. Priorities.
210
NessaMagick Mar 26, 2026 +24
In my state last year someone was driving distracted (fumbling around for a cigarette on the floor) while on meth and rear-ended another car on a bridge, killing a couple and critically injuring and traumatizing their daughter. The killer continued to drive after the crash, getting more citations for distracted driving. His punishment was 100 hours of community service and having his license suspended for two years.
24
wyvernx02 Mar 25, 2026 +321
I have used those giant googly eyes before. If they damaged the sculpture then whoever made it did a terrible job painting it. The adhesive on them isn't that strong.
321
AdjNounNumbers Mar 25, 2026 +161
My daughter's first purchase when she got her first job was a giant bag of hundreds of googly eyes that she proceeded to put on everything she thought would be funny around the house and I never once damaged a thing peeling them off. Half the time the adhesive released on its own given enough time. I only know this because I left the hilarious ones in place. Anyway, she'll be getting her first apartment after next semester and I can't wait to visit. Already got the bag of googly eyes ready to go
161
cloudncali Mar 26, 2026 +33
The kids are alright.
33
AdjNounNumbers Mar 26, 2026 +13
Heck yeah. Her second purchase was an original Nintendo DS and a bunch of games that predated her birth by a few years ago I must've done something right
13
zoobrix Mar 25, 2026 +109
Looking at the damage it seem like it's wrapped in some sort of plastic or rubber like material wrapped over top of the sculpture itself. Whatever it is it doesn't seem very durable. The real crime here is a city spending $136,000 Australian dollars on something that looks like one of those oversized animal climbers you see on childrens playgrounds.
109
DerpSillious Mar 25, 2026 +94
The real crime is not leaving the eyes on, it's alot better with them.
94
smurf-vett Mar 26, 2026 +16
Needs a party hat too
16
DerpSillious Mar 26, 2026 +10
Oh I hope its a tiny fez.
10
Zealousideal_Aide109 Mar 26, 2026 +4
a tiny cone party hat or little fascinator on its huge head would look hilarious!🤣
4
ResilientBiscuit Mar 25, 2026 +14
In a previous article it said they were superglued on. So it sounds like she didn't just use the normal sticky back on them.
14
Tin-Tin-K Mar 25, 2026 +24
It states she was under the influence of MDMA and vodka and used superglue. She didn't just stick hobby eyes on it.
24
Masterweedo Mar 26, 2026 +6
That's why you don't mix alcohol & MDMA.
6
WolfGangSwizle Mar 26, 2026 +6
It’s the glue that gets ya
6
Masterweedo Mar 26, 2026 +8
Drinking alcohol, and carrying around Gorilla Glue is a recipe for disaster.
8
bloomlately Mar 26, 2026 +5
She used super glue, even showed it off for the camera.
5
Svennis79 Mar 25, 2026 +10
You are assuming someone tried to peel them off gently in a sensible way, and didn't just go at it with a wallpaper scraper.
10
kvlt_ov_personality Mar 25, 2026 +12
Half stick of dynamite oughta do it

44

Ok, but I really liked the googly eyes on it. 🤷‍♀️

6
H0vis Mar 25, 2026 +26
I love the idea of being 'under the influence of three litres of vodka' because it implies she didn't drink it, because she'd be dead. I like to think one of those really big bottles of vodka started talking to her. "G'day ya c\*\*\*, got any googly eyes on ya?"
26
Alive_kiwi_7001 Mar 25, 2026 +7
"What's that, Skip? I need to put googly eyes on a statue or Little Jonny won't make it out of the mine?"

It's a bit of alcohol wipes and a rag, wouldn't say it's worth a conviction, kinda made it look better IMO

That's ridiculous Unless the woman put crazy glue to glue the eyes, the structure should not have been damaged by that. So no reason to press charge.
19
epidemicsaints Mar 25, 2026 +38
She filmed herself using Gorilla Glue to put them on. >Speaking to the camera, Vanderhorst slurs: “Alright government, how do you feel? 3 liters of vodka. I’ve drank a lot in my life, like a lot. I’ve never approached that amount, that’s major league drinking like the female Wade Boggs

She did not drink 3 liters of vodka alone. Drunk, or not, a $1000+ fine for googly eyes on a blob sculpture is excessive.

>and that repairs to the artwork would be costly as the stickers could not be removed without damaging the sculpture. wait how did they try and remove the googly eyes a chainsaw? a heat gun and they should practically fall off, what kind of paint did they use on that thing and how has it stood up to even mild weather?

>Local Mayor Lynette Martin said the googly eyes was "wilful damage to a valued public artwork", and that repairs to the artwork would be costly as the stickers could not be removed without damaging the sculpture. Rectified gasoline removes every sticker. Also WD40 works well, but check first that the plastic can't be damaged by applying a small amount to a spot out of sight. It's rare but happened to me once that a plastic surface became opaque after using WD40. Never had any problem with rectified gasoline (all sticker removing products contain it).

according to [https://sevoice.com.au/googly-eye-watering-fine-handed-down/](https://sevoice.com.au/googly-eye-watering-fine-handed-down/) she used gorilla glue, I'm not sure if they mean the [two part epoxy](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Gorilla-Glue-Epoxy-Clear-Glue/681614846?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=102663790) or the super glue

This is the most important thing I have seen in the last decade.

Rage bait is what pays the bills. People will either be pissed she did it, or pissed she was punished. Win-win for BBC.

No crime was committed.

There should be damage to justify a graffiti charge. Should have just been trespassing

ramdom-ink Mar 25, 2026 +4
There was damage, referenced as per the photo in the article. The stickers could not be removed without damaging the sculpture.

Im saying I don't believe that it did damage. Something built to stand in UV and the weather all day isnt going to be damaged by weak adhesive on the eyes. Even if she applied super glue to it. If the piece got damaged then it was damaged by the removal.

MDMA and THREE LITERS OF VODKA in her system, and she got the eyes bang-on straight??? I'm impressed.

I'd call it an improvement. Most things are made better with googly eyes.

The googly eyes were an improvement. She should be commended.

So you're telling me it cost $2,000 to remove the sticky residue!? Has no one ever heard of the $5 Goo gone spray bottle?

It's a more serious crime for the city officials to pay an indecent amount of money for the so-called art that is the blue blob.

Was there earlier this month and no damage remains. Was like the googly eyes weren't even there
