Great rock intros

Posted by Akeenmindofthesouth

Im trying to do a list of great rock intros. Riffs that create expectation before the song starts. Songs that lift you up!! Nothing depressing please. I want your suggestions! Some examples are: For those about to rock - ACDC Thunderstruck - ACDC The spirit of radio - rush Baba O’Riley Thanks!!! 🙏

Money for nothing - what a fckn awesome guitar intro

Efficient-Drink-7475 Mar 27, 2026 +31
dire straits goes so hard, that opening riff just builds perfectly into the main song if we're talking intros that get you hyped maybe throw in welcome to the jungle or even some sabbath like war pigs

Megamoss Mar 27, 2026 +13
If anything the intro is too good. Those reverb drenched drums and guitar build and build, then the song kicks in and the production goes suddenly clean and clear. It's like being punched in the balls just as you're about to cum. Yes' Owner of A Lonely Heart suffers from a similar problem. That said, the song is still great.

microtherion Mar 27, 2026 +2
The same "too good" description could be applied to "Living is a Problem Because Everything Dies" by Biffy Clyro.

Johnny_2Times Mar 27, 2026 +3
You beat me to it. It's also one of the very best songs (entire record, really) on vinyl to test any new gear out with.

Wotmate01 Mar 27, 2026 +3
Most concert speaker systems have certain frequencies where they're a little bit lacking, or slightly boosted, and you can tune a system using a 31 band graphic EQ to produce a flat sound, boosting or reducing frequencies as needed. I can tune a concert PA with Money For Nothing, and I'm a lighting guy.

Johnny_2Times Mar 27, 2026 +2
This is very interesting and so this was many years ago but I went to a Steve Miller Band concert and their recordings are awesome but in person, it was the most flat sounding concert I've ever been to and it was physically hard to actually hear the music. Do you think this was intentional? Or perhaps just an off night? Venue was Hard Rock Vegas which I've regularly frequented for well 30 yrs now with location and venue changes/remodels/etc etc even underground venues up the wazoo but it was the first time ever hearing a flat concert there at this venue and of all bands, Steve Miller. Totally unexpected. Couldn't hear a thing the entire time. ??

Yeah man brothers in arms rips, that’s a great reference record. Also such a hard guitar sound to replicate on MFN. Jeeez

The first minute of Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones may be the pinnacle of rock n roll.
61
lovefist1 Mar 27, 2026 +15
The whole thing really does have just about everything you could want from a rock n roll song. So much going on and it just comes together perfectly.

Honestly, you can pick just about any song on  that album.
12
Dangerous_Prize_4545 Mar 27, 2026 +2
Yeah...I thought I'd stop at two lol But just thinking about the opening of those gives me chills. And that baseline of Easy is so recognizable. They were opening with it a lot on NITL and it really builds even more in a concert setting.

Don’t Look Back by Boston. Song always lifts me up, right from the intro. Barracuda by Heart does, too. Led Zeppelin of course has several- for example Whole Lotta Love and Immigrant Song

F*** yeah they do. And those are two of the best. I’d throw in Thumb as well. Just that whole atmospheric buildup before the two drum beats and then it’s f****** ON. One of the best bands ever.

Sway, Rolling Stones Can't you hear me knocking
6
microtherion Mar 27, 2026 +2
The Stones were (are) very good in leading with their strongest riff and setting the tone. If I had to pick one, I'd probably say Brown Sugar, but the heavy riff on Jumping Jack Flash is also a classic (Especially the live version on Get Your Ya-Ya's Out), and the intro to Rocks Off really sells the sleazy atmosphere of the song.
2
frankyseven Mar 27, 2026 +5
IMO one of the greatest guitar riffs/intros of all-time is [Ladylike by Big Wreck](https://youtu.be/zsco84fcwj4?si=fCisX6lUJsR9c2lS) and hardly anyone knows it.
5
belowthepovertyline Mar 27, 2026 +3
Big Wreck should have been... bigger.
3
frankyseven Mar 27, 2026 +3
They really should have, but they are still around and making some killer music! Check out [Holy Roller](https://youtu.be/D_7ojKnWnHY?si=GatVUlw9cBMJfhX5) off their new album. F*** can they play. See them live if you ever get the chance, insane live show. Ian Thornley is probably the best guitarist on the planet.
