The other Greek city states did that to themselves. After being friendly for 15 minutes during the Persian invasions, they proceeded to brutalise each other for the next near century. A series of wars saw Athens, then Sparta, then Thebes decimated one-by-one. Then Philip came through and swept up whatever lifeless husks remained.

we did not send soldiers 20 years ago unlike other nato countries. We did not join the bombing of serbia, and we rejected sending ships for the straits and more direct involvlement in Iran war. We also rejected joining trump's board of peace.
So no Greece does not do whatever the US wants, we do what we feel serves our interests. Helping UAE defend itself is part of it.
46
MminasApr 1, 2026
+2
Bullshit. We negotiated our way out of bombing Serbia but the majority of US weaponry was transfered on Greek trains and Greek-located US bases like Suda bay were used in the operation.
We haven't send ships to the straits yet but we did deploy in south east Mediterranean in full operational capacity.
We also deployed in areas of Huthi activity recently on US request
We also historically sent forces in South Korea, in Kosovo, in Afghanistan, and other US deployment zones and we already had a patriot unit in Saudi per US request.
We are already heavily involved in the Iran war when that patriot unit engaged and destroyed Iran drones and missiles last week.

our help to UAE is because of agreement in 2020 and later on for investments and common energy policy. Its not simply about the US what you say is false.
Cyprus help was for Cyprus not because of the US, its for cypriot safety same reason other EU countries sent as well, including Spain who is vocal against the US-Iran war.
Our naval deployment for Houthi were part of a common EU program ASPIDES....
We had declined calls of US before and now, we only sent medical staff on many occasions and not soldiers, and only after bilateral agreements mainly for training did we sent troop in ME.
We have a defense pact with UAE, that is why that patriot unit is there,it was there many years before the war.
So no we do not do whatever we are told by the USA, we do what is in our interests and try to balance.

Not to sound crude but Ukraine is irrelevant to Greece
16
AHofmann1943Apr 1, 2026
-3
It isn't crude it is a geopolitical truth. Ukraine is irrelevant to the majority of the world. Its sole purpose it to be a barrier between Europe and Russia. Iran controls the straight of Hormuz and what happens there has effects that halt and reshape the entire global economy. Ukraine could get nuked and life would go on for the rest of the world -- that is not a jab at Ukraine *most* countries aren't globally relevant in the day to day life of the rest of the world. Iran is about as geopolitically important as it gets.
-3
biscuitarseApr 1, 2026
+3
> It isn't crude it is a geopolitical truth.
So if Russia succeeds in Ukraine and they move on to Poland or another NATO country, Greece or other countries in the alliance will just 'nope' out of their obligations? This geopolitical 'truth' seems a bit shortsighted at best.

At this point, any western nation sending weapons to middle east is just delaying the inevitable. They are refusing to come to the realization that they have bit more than they can chew. Even all of them together are not enough to fly 20k kms across the world and fight a medium sized country.
UAE and Saudis need to stop throwing money to stop meddling in other countries. They have stabilised quite a few countries sitting behind American security guarantees. Yemen, Somalia, Sudan they have caused bloodshed everywhere.
USA needs to stop pretending to be a world cop and everyhone needs to mind their own business. Iran's attacks will probably stop the moment they get an assurance that Israel will stop treating entiremiddle east like a video game playground

8

Does any country when they sell weapons? You do realise that weapons serve a destructive purpose.
Iran selling drones is not much different from USA selling jets or france selling warships.
I am not going to get into false equivalences here when CIA records are probably worse than Al qaeda and yet i dont see any country taking boats to bomb new york. US is not the arbitrer of justice here
1
Azatis-Apr 1, 2026

Iran shouldn't care what is happening on other countries, its their business right ? That doesn't only apply to west countries but everybody. Hamas, Hezbolah, Houthis are all IRAN based. Iranian drones hitting Ukranish people as we speak. There are bad cops everywhere. Undercover or not, still a cop.

I think it's a very risky move on the part of the Greek government. Greece depends heavily on tourism; about 20 to 25% of its economy is based on tourism-related services, so any attack they might suffer between now and summer would literally ruin their season. Their shared bases are also at risk if they allow the US to operate from them.
-2
New_Parking9991Apr 1, 2026
+3
Iran already targeted Cyprus and if they could they would have already try to hit Greece.
The truth is we have good air defence and its hard for Iran to hit target so thats not really danger for us we have taken measures.
Also airline tickets will be up 500%+ ? And if war continue well into summer...well the season will be over anyway.
We send defensive weapons for UAE to protect themselves.
