Hopefully England follow suit now wales and Scotland are banning it. It’s such a cruel practice, they’re very gentle delicate dogs but they’re kept in horrible conditions, often drugged and treated very poorly when racing, and when they’re as young as *two* they’re often either abandoned or killed because they’re too old. It’s monstrous.
It’s shameful that England is dragging its feet when it’s fairly well known that these dogs lead horrible lives at the hands of people who exploit them. They’re beautiful animals and they deserve to be treated appropriately

Shame we cannot do the same to horse racing, considering how many die on the track every year.

Yeah there’s far too much money involved for them to outlaw horse racing.

Of all things, The Simpsons hit on some of that in its *very first* full episode. Homer and Bart adopt Santa's Little Helper because he was abandoned by his owner for losing a race.
Of course, as a kid, I thought that was just cartoon contrivance. Sigh.

How many dog tracks are currently in operation in England and Wales?
This feels like banning something that’s already dead in the water.

Not sure but there’s enough to keep the greyhound rescue centres busy and short of funds, so it’s definitely still an issue

It’s 1 in Wales and 18 in England, I decided to look it up myself.
There are no tracks in Scotland though so my point stands about banning something that’s actually not even there

TIL *Florida*, the state run exclusively by corrupt real estate executives and fundies, banned dog racing before most of the Anglosphere
(it was a citizen initiative)

The FL legislature haaaaaaaaates citizen led amendments and tries to make them harder all the time, but if you can get 60% of voting Floridians to approve a referendum, we can circumvent the good ol' boys club

Liscensing wouldn't change the fate of racing dogs. To even try to bring that up as an alternative to banning it is disgusting. Besides the injuries that can lead to death, after race dogs are retired their lives are considered useless and if charities don't step in, they're usually put down.
Anyone who still supports racing dogs in 2026 has questionable morals.

Lots of adoption groups in the US are actively traveling to other countries to bring their ex-racing hounds in for adoption. Wonder if that could happen as it’s phased out in Scotland, assuming there aren’t enough people in the UK looking to give them homes. I would love to have another one.

US Greyhound Organizations are doing this because there are only 2 active tracks in the US now. There isn't really a local supply of racing greyhounds anymore. The Las Vegas Chapter of GPA has basically shutdown because they couldn't get dogs anymore. The last few years they were going to Mexico to get dogs, since the 2 remaining US tracks are in West Virginia.
I'm not against banning greyhound racing, but it will eventually mean the end of the racing greyhound breed, which is decently distinct from the AKC show greyhound breed. That does make me a bit sad, having had a wonderful retired racing greyhound, and interacted with probably 100s over the years.
When we were looking to get another greyhound, we ended up getting a borzoi instead. Very similar temperament, but better suited for the Minnesota climate.

Aussie here- have adopted 2 ex racing greyhounds and our first came to us in particularly bad shape. It was heartbreaking and he eventually passed away (coincidentally 1 year today!!) after prolonged back issues from his years on the track. The minimum care requirements in Australia for racing animals is so poor and the sooner this death sport can be stopped the better. After seeing my own greyhounds struggle I find it very hard not to have a strong disdain for anyone involved in the racing industry.

i_smell_like_beefMar 19, 2026

Speaking as someone who lives here and sees it first hand, methadone does not get people off of drugs. Methadone is essentially just a legal variant of the drugs these people are already doing. These clinics do not taper people off of it either. They up their doses to keep them on it. It's a really messed up system. The internet will lie to you and tell you i'm wrong. That's part of the hold the pharmaceutical companies have on this.

Lets hope Spain will some day also stop the running bulls, matador shit and maybe that’ll get those redneck hillbillies to stop rodeos, too.
And after that, mankind should close down all zoos.

Zoos actually play a part in keeping spieces alive that would been and have been wiped out in in the wild. I'm not saying captivity is a good thing whatsoever but there's some truth in that.

This is a compelling and necessary debate. While it is true that some zoos contribute to conservation efforts, this reality should not serve as a justification for maintaining the current model unchanged.
On the contrary, it highlights the need for a rigorous reassessment. If conservation is genuinely the objective, then the structure, priorities, and ethical foundations of modern zoos must be fundamentally rethought and, where necessary, profoundly transformed.
Because right now, we’re putting animals in zoos for conservation purposes, but we continue to destroy their natural habitats.
5
murderedbyanameMar 18, 2026

Zoos that contribute to conservation do it because habitat is being lost. They aren't ones destroying habitat.

It will be a long struggle that will take time and involve many setbacks along the way, but the world will inevitably move in that direction as our circle of moral concern expands.
Ethology and neurobiology are teaching us more every day about the complexity of non-human animals and their daily lives. All that remains is for us to overcome our many cognitive biases.

And the Epstein/trump class will do anything it enjoys, while our planet and our children suffer.

I don’t think change will arise from human will alone. It will also be driven by technology.
Cell-based agriculture is a clear example: it has the potential to produce animal-derived foods without the need to exploit animals or degrade ecosystems, as current systems do.
It is not a silver bullet, but it illustrates the direction we could take. The transition, however, will be gradual rather than immediate, sadly.
