Ben (Brendan Fraser) in *Scrubs*
Prof. Sean Garrity AKA Prof. Wooley, AKA Prof. Professorson (Kevin Corrigan) in *Community*
Lon Suder (Brad Dourif) in *Star Trek: Voyager*
I would argue that Professor Professorson works so well because he isn't overused, he's just someone that pops out every now and then and you smile and go, "oh, that guy!" If he were a regular, I think they would run out of ideas for him quickly. I think that's what makes most of these extremely minor characters work - strategic deployment for maximum effect.

I used to call this the Creed Paradox back when I was active in “The Office” fan spaces. People always talk about wanting more Creed (the wacky out there guy who says off the wall things and almost has one foot out of reality) but he only works because of how sparingly he works. Same with JR and ML in P&R.

Jean-Ralphio and Mona-Lisa are for sure my favorite part of Parks and Rec; and that is because they aren't' overused. Some fun over the top antics, a couple quick one liners and done.
A solid 20+ minutes of them would be a bit much.

Brendan Fraser coming back in a recurring role as a zombie would have completely changed the series
76
Hungry-Event9451Apr 15, 2026
+21
The zombie angle would've been wild but I think Ben worked so perfect as this tragic one-off character 💀 Like his whole arc was about accepting death and finding peace - bringing him back would've cheapened that beautiful goodbye scene
Plus Fraser was doing so many movies at that time, doubt he could commit to regular TV schedule anyway. Sometimes the guest spots hit harder because they're brief and meaningful rather than getting dragged out 😂

lockheed06Apr 15, 2026

3
QyzykApr 15, 2026

I mean, you could have had him be around more often before his tragic goodbye episode. He died in the 4th season, he could have easily been a supporting character in the seasons up to that point. If anything, it would have made his death hit even harder.

lockheed06Apr 15, 2026

Eh, sometimes less is more. One of the hardest hitting moments of the show, I wouldn't change anything about his role.

RandolphoApr 16, 2026

It could have worked if Fraser continued to come back as vignettes/hallucinations Dr Cox experienced, acting as a sort of Jiminy Cricket for Cox, who had come to terms with and knew he was dead but still imagined his takes on things, especially when he was dealing with some of the more difficult emotional issues they had in the show.

Zelenka though....absolutely. His constant banter with McKay was always priceless. And his scene in Letters from Pegasus where hes explaining the rising of Atlantis in Czech and then Ford questions if what he said was classified because he couldnt understand was hilarious. Not exactly what you asked but one that was so good he became a regular was Miles O’Brien in Star Trek The Next Generation. Apparently the character was supposed to be just another one off crew member. The cast and crew enjoyed working with Colm Meaney so much that instead of making new nameless characters and casting new people they kept bringing him back until he became a series regular with his own story lines. That eventually turned into him having a leading role on Deep Space 9.

JeanRalphio Saperstein deserved a spin-off where he became a Hollywood talent agent completely by accident and despite his obvious shortcomings. Celebrity Cameos would’ve been outrageous. Like “Entourage” if it was written by Stefon from SNL.

He probably would have become a regular or even joined the main cast if he didn't get his It's Always Sunny gig. There is no direct confirmation, but reading between the lines in some interviews they most likely wanted to keep him and boot Archie at some point, but since Howerton left, they kept Archie and started to pivot him into a real character instead of comic relief.

I feel like there were a few of these throughout 15 seasons of Supernatural (how could there not be?) but I wanted more of Agent Henriksen, the FBI agent who first hunted the brothers then was briefly an ally before being offed like literally every guest star or recurring character.
