>An oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in early March spread more than 600 kilometers (373 miles), including to seven nature reserves, and originated from a vessel yet to be identified and two “natural seepages,” Mexican authorities announced Thursday. >The international organization Oceana, dedicated to ocean conservation, said this week in a statement that, according to reports from communities belonging to the Gulf of Mexico Reef Corridor Network, the spill killed sea turtles, a manatee and various fish species, and damaged 17 reefs.

This is a time when I'm ok with it being the gulf of America.

I'm not, simply because of the high cost to wildlife and the marine environment. It breaks my f****** heart.

Yeah, first time I've heard of this and I read the news, probably more than I should. I really miss newspapers and somewhat reliable news sources.

The amount of damage we did to our planet in the last few days is irreversible and it's saddening when you think about it.

The absolute worst part: they don’t even seem to know what caused the spill

They state in the article the source of the spill. The main source is a new natural seepage in the Bay of Campeche. Minor contributors were an already known seepage elsewhere and a vessel. Though they haven’t identified the actual vessel source, so it’s likely either a small leak or they’re looking for a non-natural scapegoat

The gas station says there's an oil crisis and here's Mexico just giving it away.

Solution: Drive to the ocean, take pipe, place in ocean and fuel tank and top up, for you for free. /s

Oh, so when it's something bad it's Golf of Mexico.

Supposedly, it's the Gulf of America. The United States should help clean it up. Any oil spill is a tragedy for the environment. I still call it the Gulf of Mexico. Because that's it name

Well, not really. Not the Gulf of United States of America. Just called it the Gulf of America because it's in the Americas. I dont get the overreaction about that decision. We have north america, central america, and south america. and a gulf in the americas being called "The Gulf of America" instead of the "Gulf of Mexico" is logical. Not a necessary change, but it's not crazy.

Can you tell me why it was named, correctly, the Gulf of Mexico to begin with?

I dont know why, but I am saying it's not an insane change. It makes sense either way.

That's a reasonable take, but you can guarantee the man who is shouting it from the rooftops was not thinking of Central or South America, hell, not even all of North America when he said that.

idk, if he was really being self centered, he wouldve called it "The Gulf of Trump" He probably suggested it first though.

it is what it is. they can disagree, but they cant disagree with that fact that the name makes sense either way and doesnt mean anything. its just a name. the problem is people get outraged by everything Trump related, so even when its something that he does that doesnt really matter, people feel the need to be enraged about it and not even give it a second thought because Trump is behind it. Trump does so much shit stuff, its annoying when people are bitches about shit he does that literally doesnt matter

Don’t worry. As long it’s not gulf of America, we don’t need to worry.

Did you know that naturally occurring oil seeps from the seafloor are the largest source of oil entering the world ocean? In fact, they account for nearly half of the oil released into the ocean environment every year.

> Navy secretary, Admiral Raymundo Morales, said satellite image analysis and inspections of the area identified three sources of the spill: a vessel anchored off the coast of the port city of Coatzacoalcos, in the eastern state of Veracruz; a geological site where crude oil naturally seeps, known as a “chapopotera,” located 8 kilometers (5 miles) from that port; and another natural seepage located in the Bay of Campeche.
