Hacks

Posted by Ok_Homework5218

I don't know how I've only discovered this show till now but omgoodness, obsessed. I'm kind of glad I'm a little behind because I'm able to google "will they be friends again? Season 2...3...4" lol. Because while I think they are funny when they hate each other, my poor nervous system can't handle them not being in platonic love. Their chemistry is too good. The jokes are also too good. I've been cackling and screeching every episode. Christina Hendricks guest star- the bedroom scene- had me on the floor. Also the episode where the leads get lost in the woods was so sweet and intimate, it made me love these characters even more. Gosh. They need to make more TV like this. If anyone has any recommendations please share lol. (I'm already sad to hear they're ending with season 5. But low key makes me love it even more that they're not trying to drag it out. Keeping the good quality.) Love

Jimmy, particularly in his scenes with Kayla, is one of the more underrated straight man characters in a comedy series

It speaks well to Megan Stalter’s abilities that I like Kayla, because normally I can’t stand characters (or real people) who are so “extra.” She manages to take Kayla just to the point of Too Annoying, and then busts out with something really hilarious.

I think what works in her performance is that although she definitely plays a loveable doofus character & takes it to the max, she still has a sense of charm with her genuine love/loyalty for Jimmy, so the viewers also get rewarded with feel-good moments when her help for him and Ava/Deb pays off

She really went full gorilla with it

Yeah her values are really good when you get down to it, which is very charming in a nepo baby.

I liked her character in hacks so much that I tried to watch her new show but couldn’t get into it

Was that the one based in the UK? Like anything Lena Dunham is involved in, it just felt like so much sex for the sake of putting sex on tv and I eventually got tired of it

mbc106 2 days ago +3
Yes - this is why I was surprised that I like the Kayla character. "Extraness" and sex and raunchy humor and obnoxious behavior can be really funny if done well. But when it feels like it's been shoehorned into a plot or a character just for the sake of being edgy, it gets tiresome very very fast. Hacks and Statler do a good job of taking Kayla just far enough before she jumps the shark.

Yeah. We gave it a try as well but it wasn't for us.

Or heartfelt. I love her showing vulnerability and being rewarded for it.

Especially when it makes Jimmy look like the idiot even though he definitely was the more rational one.

I never thought about it but you are right. I don't normally like characters like her but she pulls it off. I think it's because she can actually be nice to people she likes. Often such characters are jerks to everyone.
5
mbc106 2 days ago +3
Right - it works because she very clearly cares about both Jimmy and their work. Her methods are very unconventional and at times unprofessional, but at the end of the day it's obvious that she wants them to be successful and that she wants their clients to be happy.

He's also co-creator & co-showrunner of the Show! I love they cast Dierdre Hall as herself as his mom.

Omgosh the scene where Jimmy quits and stops himself from hitting that man over the head with his iPad...JC I laughed so loud I scared my animals lol. I love that he has this undercurrent of annoyance and anger that pops out all the time. No other actor could do this part imo I think because he has such a sweet kind face (and talented ofc) I mean the whole show is perfectly cast.

This show does it all so well too… I usually HATE when characters are fighting because it always seems like the writers are just dragging out the same story. But both Ava and Debra actually grow and change between each fight and it feels so organic. Then when they do make up it feels earned and cathartic for the viewer too.

Ok_Homework5218 3 days ago +8
Yes!! I completely agree. I would have already given up on the show if it was the same fight each time. Like their last fight for where I am in the series, Ava was so honest about her feelings of hurt and betrayal it felt so raw. Then she came back smarter instead of going on a bender and doing something she'd regret. SUCH good TV gah! I'm currently counting down the episodes for their reunion lol.

Julianne Nicholson!! Loved her role and the actress. She was also brilliant in Mare of Easttown and she’s fantastic in Paradise.

Ok_Homework5218 3 days ago +7
I know her from Paradise, and saw something online that she's on this show too and nearly fainted. It looks like she is playing a character that is wild from a picture I saw, but I didn't look further because I'm excited for the suprise. I love her.

Their platonic love is genuinely my favorite ship on TV. If you want more “messy genius women being hilarious,” try The Other Two next, highly underrated.

Wait which women In the other two?

Yeah Brooke is certainly a messy woman being hilarious but I’m not so sure about genius 😂

Molly Shannon, I suppose. She is great in it.

I really don't want them to put any obstacles between Deborah and Ava during this final stretch. I just want to watch the team overcome obstacles together.

talldrseuss 3 days ago +10
Honestly this was my issue with Silicon Valley. Found the show hilarious, loved the jokes, but man I was getting fatigued with every season being: the guys have a huge obstacle to overcome, by the end of the season they finally make it big, but then something happens at the very end of that final episode of the season or the first episode of the next season to cause them to collapse and start all over again. It's like a weird Sisyphus struggle. I'm afraid the same formula might happen with Hacks. They hate each other, the struggle together, they become friends, then something happens and they hate each other again.
10
flamingdonkey 3 days ago +4
Well that was definitely supposed to be the point in Silicon Valley. It took me a while to realize and I didn't like the ending the first time I watched it because of it. But I really appreciate it on rewatches. It's not some great tech company that's going to do things differently and fairly *this time* and grow big and get rewarded for it. They bend rules, fake users, stab each other in the back, and sabotage other companies for their own selfish interests or just out of spite. The ending is actually them finally learning their lesson.

Well, except Monica.

I always find it hilarious how Entourage does the inverse of Silicon Valley. Vinny will have lost everything and then in the last five minutes it's "Scorsese saw your flop of a movie and loved it so he wants to cast you as the lead of his next movie without even an audition!"
1
Windowmaker95 2 days ago +1
It has happened. Except it's worse than Silicon Valley because the reason is always the same, Deborah and Ava's personalities.

mbc106 3 days ago +6
Agreed. It’ll be way too much if they have yet another falling out.

The creators of Hacks worked on Broad City previously, and that is one of the funniest shows of all time. I'd definitely recommend it if you haven't seen it.

dobrodude 3 days ago +2
I enjoyed that one, too. I found out yesterday that Ava's mother in real life is Laraine Newman.
2
MelanieHaber1701 2 days ago +2
Yes! Isn't that the coolest?

I just got done watching the whole thing in about a week. I really liked it. The scene on the bus where the ashes get thrown away? "You should get a smart phone, they're a game changer!" "OMG, I know about smart phones, I'm trying to be a good person, YOU STUPID B****!!!" That was the funniest line in the whole show.

I jumped on this show last year right before season 4, and have already binged it through like 3 times. One of the best in the past few years

I “learnt” a lesson with Breaking Bad. Pay attention to the Emmys and Golden Globe noms and winners.

Oh no! I don't know what this means. I don't normally follow awards, I'm scared lol
2
Own_Citron6260 2 days ago +3
It’s because hacks does well on the awards especially Jean Smart so if someone wins multiple times you check em out early on I guess is what he’s saying lol
3
Impressive_Play_2599 2 days ago +2
My intent wasn’t to offend you. These award shows can sometimes highlight tv shows that one (like myself) may overlook. The synopsis of Hacks felt like a show my wife & I wouldn’t enjoy, similarly we felt the same about BB.  After Hacks started winning more we decided to give it a go, we have caught up and are watching weekly now as the series season finale nears the end. I apologize if you found it insulting or disparaging.
2
Ok_Homework5218 1 day ago +2
Oh gosh no, 100% not offended ever. No worries :)

I keep hearing such good things about this show! I seem to enjoy other shows that get cross recommended with it, but I've tried to watch the first episode a couple of times and I just can't get through it . Is there a better point to jump in ? If I like it, I'll definitely go back to the beginning ....I'm just having a hard time connecting with any characters in the pilot .

Hacks is so good. I second the people recommending The Other Two, Broad City, Pen15. For other shows with great female friendships I’d say Derry Girls (so funny), Dead to Me, and Bad Sisters (both dark comedies, different vibes)

I just started watching it and it's one of my current favorite shows.

They're my characters in Tomodachi Life. In my game Jimmy and Kayla have moved in together, so their house is now called LuSaque and Schaeffer.

I think I may be a few seasons behind, I enjoyed it, but got a bit bored of   Ava is struggling and broke = funny Deborah is struggling (while still rich)and facing consequences = sad. Do they get beyond the misery p*** in later seasons?
