I hope season 5 doesn't pit Ava against Deborah for most of the season because I did not enjoy season 4 for that reason.

I have a feeling they'd only want to do that once.

FX114 Apr 7, 2026 +72
But season 4 was not the first time... It's practically the core premise of the show.

Current--Anything Apr 7, 2026 +23
Yes and no. They took it to an unenjoyable extreme

Syl_Vicious Apr 10, 2026 +1
Well, old habits die hard and also, people like Deborah get worse with time and the fact that she's genuinely trying to be better is beautiful to witness.

I feel like the core premise has been more mentor/mentee/frenemies, but Season 4 took it to a darker place than that

Uh. They have done that EVERY SEASON. Some less so than others, but the whole formula of the show is “1-They need each other. 2- they fight over the way they need each other. 3- something big happens to put them on the same page. 4- they come out on top! 5- instead of staying on top together one stabs the other in the back (to some extent) 6- Season Ends! Next season rinse and repeat”. But they ALWAYS are combative for the majority of the season only to come back together at the end to reach greater heights only to throw it away at the end to setup up the next season. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the show, but it’s been “by the numbers” almost every season (again to a greater or lesser extent each time).

They have done it every season...

Not to the extent of S4. And I never interpreted their relationship as a rivalry before that, more of a mentorship

"endings" is where hacks has shined all along. We've somehow gotten to the point where cliffhanger cancellations is the typical way shows end. Writers apparently just don't know how to end a season without a cliffhanger. Hacks has consistently ended every season on a note that would have been a satisfying series finale if it wasn't picked up for continuation... But also without closing out the overall story to the point where continuation felt forced. The show deserves all of its praise not just for being a really great show, but for providing an example to literally the entire TV industry of what a show that respects the viewer looks like.

I’d agree with you for Season 1 and 2, but I don’t think it would have been fully satisfying to end on the Season 3 or 4 endings (if only because each finale is so clearly setting up the next season).

FX114 Apr 7, 2026 +4
I really would have been fine if it ended after the second season. It was such a satisfying place to leave things.

TheEndingWasFine Apr 7, 2026 +1
Cliffhangers have always been the way because an audience that wants more is better for the show than an audience that feels they got closure.

I‘ve been saying this since season 1 and sounds like it’ll still be the case with season 5, but I truly think Hacks will go down as one of the best comedies in tv history. So pumped for S5!

I do think that Ava and Deborah is one of the more underrated friendships in any comedy (or recent TV show) with how it develops, so I'm excited to see how it culminates

panix199 Apr 7, 2026 +5
yes, same. Really praying it will go out with a bang. The Mr Robot of Comedy. But uff, has anyone any recommendations for new shows that are also amazing and in those genres? I'm missing shows like Barry etc

Helpful-Lobster7696 Apr 11, 2026 +1
Watch The Rooster on HBO Max.

Hacks is alright but you're dreaming. No one will be talking about this show in 5 years. I like the show but acting like it's some kind of prestige TV is crazy.

It’s good. Very good in fact. One of the best EVER? Pump the brakes kid. It’s not THAT good.

TheInfinityGauntlet Apr 7, 2026 +14
You know a guy knows comedy when he says pump the brakes kid earnestly 😭😭😭

Warm-Oil9228 Apr 9, 2026
What the hell does that have to do with comedy?

Awkward_Face_3761 Apr 7, 2026 +15
I mean, it kinda low key is one of the best ever. At least for the format. It's a serial dramedy on par with Veep or ted lasso or shrinking. I can't think of many others in that company.
15
ben345 Apr 7, 2026 +14
Veep isn’t a dramedy, and with all due respect to Hacks it pales in comparison to Veep
14
Wrong_Coast Apr 7, 2026
Veep is great, but like The Office and Parks and Rec it took a season or two before it found its legs and really got good. I don’t think there’s a single skippable episode of Hacks.

Warm-Oil9228 Apr 9, 2026 -1
Shrinking isn't on par with the other 3.

I love Hacks but if it doesn’t start off with the iconic HBO static fanfare, then it’s not HBO.

PlusSizeRussianModel Apr 7, 2026 +7
Yup. The exact thing that HBO was worried would happen when WB stole its name for its streaming service has now happened. I also see people say that The Pitt is one of the best shows on HBO, even though it’s never aired on HBO.

marklovesbb Apr 7, 2026 +11
So, any chance we can get a Jimmy and Kayla spin off?

aw-un Apr 7, 2026 +41
Hacks isn't an HBO Show, it's HBOMax. I know that can be a bit confusing, but I'd expect professional reviewers to get it right

Old-Meringue3590 Apr 7, 2026 +21
Internationally, its distributed by NBCUniversal. So I guess Warner Bros (HBO Max) didn’t even produce it.
21
FX114 Apr 7, 2026 +4
Yeah, it's a Universal Television production for HBO Max.
4
parles Apr 7, 2026 +5
It's produced by the same guy who made the Office and Parks and Rec so that makes sense

I thought it was called "Max the one to watch for HBO" 😏

wreckingcrewe Apr 7, 2026 +6
Glad to see this. Wasn’t a fan of the season finale because I thought the Deb death fakeout was c****, but I think they’ll stick the landing.

benoxxxx Apr 7, 2026 +3
No surprise. Show has been consistently great, honestly difficult to even nitpick, since day 1. Writers that good don't suddenly drop the ball. Definitely one of the best comedies of my lifetime.

I was at Ceasers in Vegas last fall and watched some Scenes being filmed. I haven’t watched the show since season 1 and I think I know some major spoilers. (For anyone interested in the behind the scenes- they keep a very closed set. They had the one main pool area closed off for a few days and also curtains on all the windows in the hallways that looked out to that pool area. I was managing a corporate event that was using a private space that had a balcony that overlooked this area. We kept waiting to be told to leave, but it never happened. We watched for hours. It was very cool, and wow- does it take a looooonngggg time to get a shot)

I love all the characters around Debra with the exception of Kayla. I don't think she's funny, just annoying. She has had some great ideas and saved the day at times, but her personality and quirky dressing is overdone I think. Thoughts?

I cannot wait, I LOVED the ending of Season 4....setting the stage for something huge and I hope Lipka gets his. I really love when Goldwyn is the bad guy because I already despise his f****** nepo rich ass for having everything handed to him in his life. That's luck not skill.
-2
OuterSpaceBootyHole Apr 7, 2026 +15
Tony Goldwyn probably isn't the best example of a nepo baby failing upwards...
15
Worried-Tea5316 Apr 7, 2026 +8
Are you under the impression that anything bad that happens to his character also happens to him? Because even by listnook nepo baby discourse this is dumb.

nimbuscloud9 Apr 7, 2026 +4
Lmao he’s not exactly in the super A list Brad Pitt George Clooney stratosphere. Did he hurt you?

"Best comedy of the last 5 years" hacks is cool but on what planet is hacks funnier than the rehearsal, succession, the white lotus, the righteous gemstones or Barry? Gtfo

Im not ready for this. God please give us a spinoff series 😭

What’s this akin to? I’ve seen shows like Silicon Valley, Curb, Veep — similar in quality to those?

Opposite-Fan8777 Apr 11, 2026 +1
Nothing compares to Curb..

Jealous-Try-2554 Apr 8, 2026 -3
DTF St Louis is their best comedy of the last five years and it isn't even close.
-3
Dapaaads Apr 8, 2026 +2
Not much of comedy. And it’s ok. Hacks is definitely the better comedy
2
Warm-Oil9228 Apr 9, 2026
Interesting. I try to stick to comedy dominant stuff so I'll keep that in mind as that show was on my list but really not very high.
