I don’t know how to explain it but this looks like a live action version of a live action movie.

CARBSnKILOS Mar 26, 2026 +203
You explained it perfectly

Ihateporn2020 Mar 26, 2026 +209
The editing is too busy and modern. The props and costume look derivative of the original series, though the scenery looks good. The original just lives rent free is the problem. Also it just feels cynical at some level.

The music doesn't have that magical feeling.
44
SmooK_LV Mar 26, 2026 +14
Oh they absolutely butchered music for trailer. First episodes should feel magical..or so I feel because movie felt that way. In any case, I hope it turns out magical.
14
softsnowfall Mar 26, 2026 +52
The magic is missing. It feels like it was filmed in a mall in the 90’s… Just ordinary. Like the soul of the books and the characters and the settings has been drained away by dementors… Also, Hagrid shouldn’t sound posh… It’s almost like in trying to reinvent the characters, it’s gone so far in another direction that they’re the opposite of the characters. Maybe I just can’t make the jump. Idk why. I love LOTR and The Hobbit movies and still loved Rings of Power…

This feels like I woke up in an alternate reality where the series all looks and sounds the same but the characters have different faces

Didn't one of the movie directors comment on this? He was disappointed after first look photos released. They had basically re-used or re-created all the old sets and costumes. He was looking forward to their interpretation of the wizarding world and then realized it was actually his, again, with new people.

LupinThe8th Mar 25, 2026 +957
It was always going to look like that, for depressing reasons. There's a whole Harry Potter theme park, based on the look of the movies. They aren't going to redesign the whole place to match a show, which would be expensive and alienate people who prefer the movies, and they don't want the park to NOT resemble the show so as to attract new fans, so the solution is to just make the show look the same. It's so cynical and mercenary. "Oh, you've got some original ideas for how Hogwarts might look? New designs for wands, robes, etc? Well too damn bad, gift shop already sells all that c*** so yours had better match."
957
morganvelvetxo Mar 25, 2026 +354
So the creative direction is essentially being outsourced to a gift shop in Orlando

I feel like this comment is going to get reused for a long time
84
Sabretooth1100 Mar 25, 2026 +412
Those reasons are why there shouldn’t have been a new show yet in the first place. The movies are still a massive cultural touchstone
412
Toby_O_Notoby Mar 25, 2026 +368
Way back when it was initially announced, critic Dan Feinberg made an interesting point: the three people on stage were Casey Bloys, David Zaslav, and JK Rowling. As he put it, "So that's the guy who's channel it's going to be on, the guy in charge of the theme parks, and the original author. You know who wasn't on stage? Any creative person to say why this was a good idea. Like, if Guillermo del Toro was there to talk about how he had a unique vision to retell this story, that would be one thing. But this is just three people saying, 'We'd like to make some more money off this IP, please.'"
368
SketchySoda Mar 26, 2026 +70
A Guillermo del Toro version of Harry Potter would be sick as hell tho. Someone sell him the IP instead.
70
hhhisthegame Mar 25, 2026 +133
honestly the look and feel of hogwarts is one thing the movies did right. Theres a whole lot else they did wrong. So I don’t mind them keeping that because that was never the issue.
133
daniel-sousa-me Mar 25, 2026 +77

68
Canvaverbalist Mar 25, 2026 +104
Call that a failure of imagination on my part but I genuinely fail to picture anything that would be distinct enough while remaining in tone. Like there's not really that many ways to depict "modern witchy vibes with capes and cauldrons and quills and parchments in an old whimsical gothic castle" other than what we've seen already, without going so far out that it just becomes dissonant and weird. I feel like people are asking the art department of this show to look at 1+1 and come up with a different answer than 2.
104
SpaceNigiri Mar 25, 2026 +270
Yeah hahaha that's exactly how I felt watching this. It felt so weird, but only because it already exists, but different. It actually felt a bit like how some AI videos feel, but not because it looks AI but because some of them despict similar "impossible" situations that feel like a fever dream, like I don't know Albert Enstein talking with Trump.

Yeah but when you deal with an I.P that is already in Hd and has a story that doesn't involve technology of the day, it doesn't really age. There wasn't really a need for a new harry potter other than more merch and money
385
ZemGuse Mar 25, 2026 +184
I read a report in the WSJ a good while ago that the WB team has tried to make new stories in the universe but JK Rowling is really precious and recalcitrant about everything and they need her permission. They don’t need her permission to re-adapt the books because they have those rights which is why I’m guessing this is what the decision was. I’ll see if I can find the article. Edit: Here is the article: https://www.wsj.com/business/media/jk-rowling-harry-potter-warner-bros-tv-ba66a767?st=B8xTjZ&reflink=article_copyURL_share It’s an interesting read but here is a relevant quote: “A Potter series would be costly, but could prove a major subscriber draw. Zaslav soon concluded, however, that the only Potter show Warner could legally pursue without Rowling’s permission was one that stuck to the stories of the original seven books, since those were firmly in the studio’s control and not the kind of prequel or spinoff she’d clawed back the rights to years earlier.”
184
TiberiusCornelius Mar 25, 2026 +116
> JK Rowling is really precious and recalcitrant about everything and they need her permission. Not that I have any love for JKR or confidence that she would handle other stories set in the same world better (see: Fantastic Beasts 2 & 3) but like in a general sense I get it. I would have zero faith in studio executives to make something that isn't just memberberry glup shitto slop looking to make a quick buck. I think it's generally better to protect your original vision than let them make a JJ Abrams movie with your iconography.
116
manachar Mar 25, 2026 +67
There’s a lot in the books that is condensed that could use the pacing a series could provide.

111
richardawkings Mar 26, 2026 +156
Nick Frost is too delicate with the character. In the films you really felt loke Hagrid was a giant in a world made for ordinary people. Always too loud and forceful but never intentionally so. Like he was a bull that worked in a china shop. Always a little out of place but cursed for having such love and fascination for these little creatures.
156
Unhappy-Poetry-7867 Mar 26, 2026 +31
I think that's the problem, original movies did such a good job with choosing actors that it's difficult to see someone else play it...
31
bfsfan101 Mar 25, 2026 +833
It just feels so weird. There have been tons of remakes and reboots in my lifetime but I can’t think of one that looks quite so… uncanny. Like, the Harry Potter world is so distinct and iconic that it feels weird just redoing the story with what looks like even the same shots as the originals. It’s like they’ve literally just plastered new actors over the original. I’m not even a Harry Potter fan, but we’ve been so saturated with Harry Potter for 25+ years that seeing a straight remake feels really strange.
833
pr0jesse Mar 25, 2026 +125
Agree. I would be feeling weird if they’d reboot Star Wars or lotr from the first movie

I can deal with the reboot, the recasting and probably all the alternative interpretations. But I have a nagging feeling it will all still feel wrong without John Williams' music.

833
BallClamps Mar 25, 2026 +585
I think my biggest problem will be how damn perfect the casting was in the films. Everyone looks good in the show so far but I feel like I wont be able to help myself by comparing them to the movie cast.
585
Hippocalypse44 Mar 25, 2026 +349
It always made me laugh though that Harry's having his mother's green eyes is always such a big deal in the books, and it's mentioned that he has his mother's eyes in the movies, but Daniel Radcliffe has absurdly blue eyes. And then they didn't even have an actress with blue eyes play his mother
349
AdventuresOfKrisTin Mar 25, 2026 +263
"YOU HAVE YOUR MOTHERS EYES" No he really didn't 😭

Hrvatiks Mar 25, 2026 +14
Postman Pat’s eyes
14
CuddleWings Mar 25, 2026 +142
The last part is the kicker for me. Assuming Daniel Radcliffe is required: Green contact lenses? No. CGI his eyes green? No. Make less of a big deal about having his mother eyes? No. Get an actress for like, 2 scenes with eyes that match Daniel’s? No. The only possible explanation is that they actively chose to not care.
142
EuphoricPhoto2048 Mar 25, 2026 +100
Actually, Daniel Radcliffe couldn't tolerate the contacts. Why they couldn't just change Lily's eyes to match his... Idk.
100
trivia_guy Mar 25, 2026 +84
They tried to have him wear green contacts when they first started filming, and they bothered Radcliffe too much. And I assume changing the color of his eyes in every scene would’ve been too expensive to CGI in 2001. So they asked and got Rowling’s permission to make his eyes blue in the movies. Still doesn’t excuse not making Lily’s eyes blue.
84
Arctaedus Mar 25, 2026 +34
It must've been that contacts bothered Lily's actress too much as well. It's bothersome contacts all the way down.
34
delpieric Mar 26, 2026 +28
"You have your mother's contacts-intolerant eyes"
28
TulipSamurai Mar 25, 2026 +15
A lot of people don’t react well to contact lenses. And doing CGI for literally every single scene with Harry would be annoying. But it is absolutely indefensible that they didn’t cast actresses who had the same eye color as Daniel Radcliffe for the cumulative 2 minutes that Lily appears in the entire series.
15

Oh good. That was the biggest hit for me on this trailer. So ultra generic I can't stand it.
60
NachoNutritious Mar 25, 2026 +38
I was weary about Hans Zimmer doing the score until I heard his score for No Time to Die. It was WAY more reverential to the James Bond themes/motifs than either of Thomas Newman's scores and he's now easily the best modern Bond composer behind David Arnold. Too many composers have an arrogance where they feel they need to put their own spin on something and discard the prior work, Zimmer has surprised me in that he appears to have none of that arrogance.
38
Kyuubee Mar 25, 2026 +194
It likely won't even be him handling most of the music. Zimmer is a brand at this point. At best, he'll compose the main theme. The rest will be produced by younger composers at his production company. The announcement already basically confirms this: > Hans Zimmer **and his music company, Bleeding Fingers Music,** are set to compose the score for HBO‘s upcoming "Harry Potter" series. https://variety.com/2026/tv/news/harry-potter-series-hans-zimmer-original-score-1236631551/

42
thismeatsucks Mar 25, 2026 +103
The music is like half the magic of the original movies. I wonder why they didn’t use the original theme and just bring new life to it.
103
chaamp33 Mar 25, 2026 +39
That was one of my favorite things about last years Superman movie. We already know we have the perfect theme song just work off that
39
geek180 Mar 25, 2026 +9
I'm really hope Zimmer still incorporates some of the iconic motifs from the original series, even if it's done sparingly. That would be the perfect way to tug on the nostalgia feels if timed correctly.
9
TheJoshider10 Mar 25, 2026 +63
I don't mind the overall scores being different considering the movies had multiple composers. That said, the one consistent thing they had was the Williams theme, and I hope that remains. It's just far too iconic.
63
ThaddeusJP Mar 25, 2026 +335
My take on this is it feels colder. The movies had a 'warmth' to them
335
HI-McDunnough Mar 26, 2026 +227
this is going to sound incredibly stupid, but it looks like an HBO version of Harry Potter. You know what I mean.
227
Legendver2 Mar 26, 2026 +86
Yea. It's got a sorta adult gritty look to it with all the greys. The movies had a warm filter to them. This one has a cooler filter it seems.
86
No-Juggernaut8847 Mar 25, 2026 +45
Indeed, I was thinking this looks like Game of Thrones. Lots of contrast with focus on the dark tones. Barely could see McGonagall and Snape.
45
theplasmasnake Mar 25, 2026 +4528
It looks well made… but it also just looks like the movies. Uncannily so, with some imagery and shots looking pretty near identical. Which then makes me wonder… what’s the point?
4528
DrSpacemanSpliff Mar 25, 2026 +872
Fortunately/Unfortunately for the producers, the “british boarding school uniforms in old british buildings” has a fairly consistent look. It gives an excuse for the sameyness, but also gets to cash in on the audience familiar with the visuals of the movies.
872
LostAbbott Mar 25, 2026 +360
Well we also can't have Universal Studios having to rebuild all of their theme park IP, now can we?

pepcorn Mar 25, 2026 +119
Yeah but they've deviated from the books in exactly the same way the movie did. Hagrid looks like the movie version, not the book version. Same for the Gryffindor house flag. Same for the sorting hat. And so on.
119

The shot of Ron and Hermione clapping in the stands is quite literally identical to a shot in one of the movies. I noticed it right away
64
Iswaterreallywet Mar 25, 2026 +12
I feel like it’s a tough sell for the same audience though. We/they have grown up on 20 years of it and most people are very resistant to change
12
AgentOfSPYRAL Mar 25, 2026 +323
Movies 1-2 adapted the books pretty faithfully, and since they were shorter not a lot was cut, but that’s not the case for 3-7. Early on it is gonna overlap a lot just from an “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” angle.
323
GaryTheCabalGuy Mar 25, 2026 +114
I just listened to the full cast audiobooks and yah....progressively more content gets cut as the films go on. OOTP is especially super egregious with cutting content, the movie feels like it is a speed run. It turns several chapters of content into quick musical montages, and completely cut out other parts
114

Also the point is to capture a new generation. Sure millennials will show their kids the movies but that is nowhere close to the impact a new show will have on the zeitgeist.

Saw a comment that said Warner Bros told them to keep the looks similar so the merch was consistent. Don't know what truth there is to that claim, but it'd be mad funny if it were.

I mean a show can go into more detail and be more faithful to the source material. So there's that.

mojo-jojo-was-framed Mar 25, 2026 +217
Ya I don’t think this is some big mystery. An 8-10 hour season for book 1 can do way more than the 2 hour movie.

CollinsCouldveDucked Mar 25, 2026 +155
That's probably going to benefit later entries significantly more than philosophers stone which is pretty light.

It could be interesting since it offers the opportunity to flesh out more things from those early years with the foresight of the full world being developed. One of my main issues with the movies as adaptations was that they often felt disjointed, partly due to them being handled by changing directors, partly due to the books not being finished when they did the first few, and partly because of reduced time to cover the longer books. Stuff like characters disappearing for full movies until they had a larger role, even when they were always there in the books (Dobby as the biggest example). Depending on the team handling this season a longer more "slice of life" type of adaptation for the first two books could be an interesting take. This trailer is already focusing quite a bit on the lived part of a Hogwarts school year.

More Dobby time

PsyanideInk Mar 25, 2026 +22
I think the best part of the first book though isn't the plot, is basking in the discovery of the wizarding world and Hogwarts with Harry. Just being able to linger on moments like Christmas or quidditch practice as they were written will be great, if done correctly.

I’m sure a lot of people will complain about Snape but Frost seems terribly miscast as Hagrid. His voice and mannerisms just felt off. He didn’t give off a fearless giant that can handle any sort of magical creature. Hagrid is a gentle giant but still.

TheGreatTimmyAT Mar 25, 2026 +644
Generally speaking, it will be very difficult to compete with the top-notch cast of the original films. Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, Kenneth Branagh, Richard Harris, Robbie Coltrane, and so on. Harry Potter was a grand reunion of Britain's best actors. Those are no small shoes to fill.

Mark Addy did a better job in the audiobooks, so he'd nail the voice, at least.

machisuji Mar 25, 2026 +101
Especially in the case of Hagrid!

Pal__Pacino Mar 25, 2026 +176
It's a totally singular performance, but even setting that aside, Hagrid's an oafish bumpkin with a heart of gold. He's not supposed to talk with the cadence of a well-educated person lol.

Agreed. It doesn’t sound right at all. That was the main thing that bothered me so far.

Nick Frost was also noticeably bad in the live action How to Train Your Dragon. He’s just lacks that oomph. Generally he’s pretty underwhelming when not paired with Simon Pegg.

The_Po_Gamer Mar 25, 2026 +38
100%. I have my reservations about Snape's casting (not because of his race, more how it looks that Harry starts distrusting him on sight when Snape is seemingly the only black professor) but since he was announced I thought Nick Frost was a terrible choice has Hagrid. He doesn't feel like a good fit at all. I hope he proves me wrong, though.
38
Shaman19911 Mar 26, 2026 +10
I definitely have reservations about his race, specifically because of what you said. I hate hate hate that the only race swap we know of so far in this adaptation was reserved for a character whose story would actively be harmed by doing so. Now the marauders are gonna come off as racist bullies, and Harry’s dynamic with him will also carry racist undertones. Plus Snape is like, the biggest most evil a****** besides actual villains (until the end of the series as we all know). Pisses me off that they would throw all this baggage onto a black actor. I know it was his choice and all, and it’s not like he was forced to take the role, but I really hope that he doesn’t end up being the only race-swapped character, or that they don’t make it seem like all the little limey brats aren’t just racist.

This is f****** weird it's like uncanny valley Harry Potter because it's all the exact same as the movie except the faces are slightly morphed. What was the point of this besides money?

Rpanich Mar 25, 2026 +105
So generally the idea is like…. Robes, wands, posters with actors…. All replaceable if the show is a hit.  But if the show is a failure, you just switch everything back. But what you won’t change Is anything really fundamental, like the architectural design or general tone or vibe or anything that would actually make or original or creative.
105
No_Cauliflower_81 Mar 25, 2026 +11
Yeah you’re right, Hogwarts in Florida is probably to expensive to change though

I did get a feeling of weirdness, like stepping into a parallel universe, because of how similar it seems to the movies, and maybe how familiar I am with them. To the movies credits, they created such a vivid universe that it is now hard to step away from it completely (there have been other "readaptations" that were able to take more liberties).
97
Nanosauromo Mar 25, 2026 +62
Yeah, like, Villeneuve’s Dune looks nothing like Lynch’s Dune even though they’re the same story. This, not so much.

Ultimately I think that's what gets at me with this. It's been a long time since the first film was released but it's not so far away from the finale it just feels like this is something no one has been really asking for. Even the last film apparently only came out 15 years ago. Are people really looking to watch the same film series spread out over many more hours ? Of course it will be a smash but the films still really hold up well and don't feel dated

While I'm currently on the "Wait and see approach" with this show till the 2026 Holiday season. The child actors for Harry, Ron, and [especially Hermonie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrsNeqANI3k) ([including the entire child cast](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv80DLlUwNQ)) better stay as faraway from the Internet and Social Media for the next decade or two. The film series was lucky enough to conclude in 2012 before social media really started to blow up! The only notably creepy thing that happened during the film's production was that somebody made a website that counted down till Emma Watson turned 18. My heart goes out to the new cast in this new era of television! I really hope the new Harry Potter series won't spawn another [Jake Lloyd (Young Anakin Skywalker) situation](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_GNgO79-Mk) with the child actors. Besides the child cast, I'm not looking forward to the amount of Ragebait and "Woke" Youtube videos will be created as more teasers and photos get released for this show up till the 2026 Holiday season. Unfortunately, The Critical Drinker and Clownfish TV are going to have a field day with this show for the foreseeable future.

I just had an existential crisis when I said to my wife it’s probably going to be 10+ years until we see the finale. Which puts me at almost 50 with teenage children, while now I’m just past mid 30s with a 3 and 1 year old. What is time

This is so weird. It's like if they remade Star Wars or Jurassic Park or Back to the Future.

DavidForADay Mar 25, 2026 +58
Genuinely, why would you watch this and not merely rewatch the originals that are only 15-25 years old? This looks too much like the original. If you are gonna do something like this so soon, you should emphasize different beats that got cut out of the original story. Not make a shot for shot remake like that one Psycho move that copied the original and added nothing of substance.
58
El_Cance_R Mar 25, 2026 +186
It's not bad, but it looks like it's missing the "magic". Maybe it's the photography or the music but it doesn't breath "magic"
186
Pal__Pacino Mar 25, 2026 +145
The first few movies are a masterclass of production design and color grading. Every frame feels so warm and lived in. This was always gonna feel smaller and dingier by comparison.
145
SouthIsland48 Mar 25, 2026 +62
It's the streaming gray shit. All these new shows and movies are optimized to be streamed over the internet and shot cheaply, so the contrast is absolute horse shit
62
Cantomic66 Mar 25, 2026 +47
The lighting very generic.

36
myman580 Mar 25, 2026 +15
Pretty sure it's the music. Hearing the Harry Potter theme instantly transported you to that "magic" place in the movies even in settings that weren't magical. Hopefully it's just placeholder (And they weave some of the old John Williams' score into it when appropriate).

GingerNingerish Mar 25, 2026 +98
This might sound like a redundant statement, but it definitely looks like a TV show. And using the same iconography of the original films just makes it feel like a more sterile version of that, more so than what david yates did to the series. It just feels c****, like generic fantasy TV, this really shows the huge achievement Chris Columbus made brining the original to life.
98
Iswaterreallywet Mar 25, 2026 +20
The first two movies, first especially, had such a magical feeling around them
20
Krirby2 Mar 25, 2026 +20
It really does look like the HBO realization of a drama series. The original movies captured the magic so well that I'm wondering if a grimmer-looking repeat production can do the same.
20
bondinferno Mar 25, 2026 +269
It feels like a well produced, well shot HBO series, but still feels hollow and overly serious. As janky as those earlier films are, they have a sincerity to them and above all are fun.
269
_BreadDenier Mar 25, 2026 +289
The first two movies aren’t janky, they were Chris Columbus movies and that’s his style. Very cozy, home alone esque.
289
philter25 Mar 25, 2026 +173
Those first two Chris Columbus films are such a vibe, hold up well, and absolutely capture the lightning in a bottle of the early books. These look like nostalgia bait.

They had a Christmas glimmer to them.

baequon Mar 25, 2026 +45
I have a feeling this will be the next thing people on Reddit are convinced will fail, and then it'll inevitably be absolutely massive. The trailer indicates it's at least competently made. There's also tons of material that couldn't fit into the films. Harry Potter is a massive property and this will likely pull in a huge audience across curious millennials/Gen Z and younger audiences who may not have engaged with the originals which are "old" movies now.
