i know everybody is being negative but im still excited. this story is just so good. I just wish the author wasnt so closeminded.

I’m currently re-reading and there is just so much from books 4-7 they won’t need to cut. Can’t wait to actually get to see scenes from the quidditch world cup final and the other contestants in the tournament tasks for example.

I'm confused you've just explained exactly how Rowling thinks and then said it's close minded, exactly like the original comment states.

While it is an unnecessary project, it is undeniable that it is going to be a huge commercial success for HBO.

Only if they respect the source material and stick to the books. GoT was the biggest show in the world and failed to stick the landing when they ran out of source material. They shouldn’t have that problem here but there’s no shortage of writers with the hubris to change a story to “make it their own”

We already got a more or less "perfect" adaptation of the books. Sure you can hem and haw about how they cut f****** Norbert the Norwegian Ridgeback or whatever but I don't think anybody has any big complaints about those adaptations (except my one sticking point about him not fixing his wand at the end of 8 what the actual f***.) Dude show me, idk, Quirrel resurrecting Merlin who was actually a dark wizard that Voldemort was trying to stop or something. Get fuckin weird. Harry ends up with Draco in the end f*** it who cares. Harry becomes trans, turns to the camera and says "F*** JK Rowling."

They have the opposite problem here. Yeah, you gotta stick close to the books especially with *this* fandom. Which I think the author's kinda obscured for a while but uh...the old ones remember. Problem is you gotta slog through two seasons where the movie actually did cover the bulk of what was there yet the structure means you gotta act like they only covered about a quarter or third of it. Long hype + a reality like that? You'll have an audience sure, see if you can keep it.

More than a year between seasons is also going to be a big factor. What's stopping the more casual folks from going back to the movies on the same platform?

Why an unnecessary project? The movies hold nostalgic value but really aren’t incredible dialogue pieces. HBO usually makes incredible shows and Hans Zimmer to boot

Because the movies already do a good enough job. And HBO is almost certainly going to cancel this before it can get through all seven books, especially with HBO length seasons.

Informal_West_6864 Mar 28, 2026 +8
Then simply don’t watch it lol

Didn’t plan to.

sugarsnappeah Mar 28, 2026 +9
Why do you think HBO will cancel it? Because of the multi-year seasons and length to air it all?

dballing Mar 28, 2026 -6
Because it's going to take an absolutely insane number of seasons (at HBO-season-length) to get through all seven books. If they're going to do "abridged" versions, the movies already do that well enough (one season per book). If they're going to do "complete" versions, it's going to take probably 14 seasons to do it right (2 seasons per book). No way they're going to stick around for 14 seasons. With standard HBO production delays that's like 20 years of programming, and these kids will be in their late 20s by the time they're "seventh year" students.

14 seasons wtf are you smoking? One season per book will be fine. The movies were alright at 2.5 hours you think they can’t make it work with 7-8 hours?

HBO doesn’t cancel shows that make money. If they had their way, GOT would still be airing new seasons. That’s why they greenlit a million spin offs. Even outside of GOT, all of their successful tentpoles only ended when the showrunners didn’t want to do anymore seasons. The show will continue for as long as the streaming numbers justify the cost.

They really don’t do a ‘good enough’ job. They miss out a huge amount and poorly characterise a number of the characters. I’m looking forward to seeing how this interpretation handles the source material, and think it is highly unlikely HBO will cancel this given how much money it is going to make them.

I'm curious - what are all of the necessary tv shows?
3
Mojave_RK Mar 27, 2026 +3
Like it or not, this is probably going to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, streaming shows ever.

Everything is unnecessary. In terms of rebooting a movie as a show, this makes a lot of sense. Lots was cut in the movies.

The truth of the matter is that casual, international audience is barely aware of JK Rowling’s existence, much less anything she’s said or done. A significant portion also don’t care what the characters look like. They will watch anything HP-related. Even the hate watching numbers alone would likely be enough to make this the most successful HBO since Game of Thrones. Heck, it might surpass those numbers. I’ve long given up being surprised by the enduring & passionate fandom around the franchise.

As someone who didn’t read the books but enjoyed the movies, I am interested in this series. Not excited, but I’m interested.

wild that they're going back to the original title instead of sorcerers stone for the hbo version

Americans might understand what a Philosopher's Stone is now.

civil_politician Mar 27, 2026 +7
We did back then too, or at least anyone that would have read these books did

WB have very little faith you guys did.

The trailer looks great but Snape being race swapped made me cringe as a black guy. But then so did the comments calling him “professor snoop” and just stereotypical jokes calling him untrustworthy, his dreads, comparing snape on the tree to lynching. That only happened to African Americans, not every black person in the world like what??? The generalisation baffles me. ANYWAY, they need to stop the race swaps and create original black characters instead. The industry must be doing these provocative stuff to incite racial tension or something . They did it with Annabeth in Percy Jackson, Helen of Troy In the odyssey, cleopatra the list goes on. Stop it please
