Dating back to "I'm the juggernaut b****!" I can think of a bunch of examples where a movie referencing an internet meme is cringey and terrible. "I'm a bit of a scientist myself" was another awful one. Obviously kids movies are different ie "Lava Chicken!" because kids just want to yell stuff onscreen. But were any references actually funny? Did any internet meme reference make a movie better?
Galaxy Quest. When they’re landing on the alien planet and Guy starts freaking out because he doesn’t have a name and he’s the only one wearing a red shirt.

I guess that’s an “internet meme” reference but it’s also just a direct reference to the show they’re explicitly parodying.

Yeah in hindsight it’s more of a pop culture reference than an internet meme.

"I'm a bit of a scientist myself" came from Spiderman in 2002, it wasn't a reference to a meme.

They reference it in No Way Home

So a Spiderman movie that's entirely built on nostalgia references a famous line?

They had Doc Ock literally say his "power of the sun in the palm of my hand" line TWICE.

Yeah? It's famous because it became a meme

Unless I misremember here, it's the same character saying it. That makes it not a reference, but a personality trait for him.

wait. “I’m a bit of a scientist myself” wasn’t taken from a meme, it *became* a meme. right?

Yes but he says it again in No Way Home

Not funny, exactly, but The Return of the King referenced [Figwit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Figwit) in a fun but understated way. If you don't know the meme, the moment is completely normal, but makes for a fun nod to the fans.

The Green Goblin one is hilarious, so idk what you're on about here. In general Marvel does it well. Deadpool and Wolverine referenced a few memes and it was hilarious almost every time

Not quite sure what point you're trying to articulate with that.
But I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for hurting your feelings.

I physically shrivel when I see the “what are those?!” scene in Black Panther. Some jokes are time capsules that look terrible in hindsight.

deadpool kinda nailed it with the whole meta thing but most movies just feel like your dad trying to be cool when he drops a random "that's what she said" at thanksgiving dinner

The Mitchells Vs the Machines is an animated movie that is absolutely LOADED with references to (mostly 2000s/early 2010s) internet memes. In my opinion it works because:
1. It's kind of the nature of the movie itself that it's very internet-brained, so they don't feel like out of place moments
2. The vast majority of them are blink and you miss it details rather than pausing the movie to deliver a punchline
3. When a meme reference IS part of the main joke, it's never treated as the joke itself (we said the thing, now laugh). Instead it's woven into other, much more character driven jokes and moments.

Taking advantage of the Internet buzz for what had been a minor film in their 2006 line-up, New Line Cinema ordered five days of additional shooting in early March 2006 (principal photography had wrapped in September 2005).[16] While re-shoots normally imply problems with a film, the producers opted to add new scenes to the film to change the MPAA rating from PG-13 to R and bring it in line with growing fan expectations. The most notable addition was a revision of a catchphrase from the film that was parodied on the Internet by fans of the film, capitalizing on Jackson's typically foul-mouthed and violent film persona: "Enough is enough! I have had it with these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane!".[6] Subsequently, the public responded favorably to this creative change and marketing strategy, leading some members of the press to speculate that "the movie has grown from something of a joke into a phenomenon".
