Has anyone seen a movie called "The Long Good Friday"

Posted by Retrofusion11

This might be the greatest British gangster/crime film ever. The ending was incredible with Bob Hoskins going through the 5 stages of grief in 2 minutes with the music. Incredible film For those that seen it, what are your overall thoughts on it. Do you guys think it compares with the best of American gangster films?

proper hidden gem that one - bob hoskins absolutely smashed it and the way they built up the tension throughout was mental. watched it years back when i was going through a phase of digging into older brit crime films and it blew me away how raw it felt compared to some of the american stuff the ending you mentioned is pure class - watching his face go through all those emotions without saying a word is proper acting. think it definitely holds its own against the likes of goodfellas or scarface but in a completely different way. american gangster films tend to be more flashy and over the top whereas this felt more gritty and real if that makes sense helen mirren was brilliant in it too - shame more people dont know about this film because its genuinely up there with the best crime films ever made

That final scene from Hoskins also features young Pierce Brosnan. Also, don't forget Helen Mirren as Hoskins's lady, who is far more than just the crime lord's mistress.

It’s fun to connect Pierce Brosnan’s character from this to his character in The Foreigner.

I liked Mona Lisa (also a 80s Bob Hoskins British crime movie) even more. Also check out The Hit with the late Terrance Stamp, a young Tim Roth, and a menacing John Hurt.

I found The Hit a little disappointing, though it really did feel very modern and ahead of its time in a lot of ways. Terrence Stamp and John Hurt are also incredible in it.

I have the 4K release from Criterion. Fantastic film with a great cast. Helen Mirren looks so young! And you can also spot Pierce Brosnan in a small role early in the film, as well as Paul Freeman, who would appear a year later as the villain in Raiders of the Lost Ark. But the best thing about the movie is Bob Hoskins. The second best thing is possibly the score.

Pierce Brosnan shows back up at the end too!

yeah that ending is insane, Bob Hoskins just slowly realizing everything is falling apart hits different. it holds up against a lot of American gangster films imo, just way more bleak and grounded

"The Scene is Set" by Francis Monkman was absolutely perfect for that film. The scene at Heathrow Airport where the theme hits as Harold arrives back from his trip was absolutely incredible.

Fantastic movie. Hoskins and Mirren are impeccable. The character that Bob Hoskins draws is this old-school gangster in denial about the food chain in the modern world. And for a moment toward the end of the film he gets a glimpse of how bullshit his own sense of moral superiority really is, only to decide he needs to double down on the delusion… Beautiful, ugly film. I absolutely do think it holds up next to American gangster films.

I blind bought the criterion 4k because I love the genre, and was slightly underwhelmed. I think I'll like it better on rewatch, but I was expecting more energy and it turned out to be much more of a character piece. Not bad, but quieter than I was hoping for.

Saw it on TV in the mid 80s.

One of the all-time great films and theme songs. The genius that is Brian Pern may have since made rewatching it a bit more interesting, however. Especially the ending. Can't not see Simon Day pulling those faces.

Great movie. Giving Bob Hoskins the shower scene over Helen Mirren is a choice, but to each their own.

Been many years since I saw it but I remember it being very good. Try Get Carter if you haven’t already seen it. Michael Caine in his prime - “You’re a big man, but you’re out of shape. For me it’s a full time job.”

Yes one of the best British gangster movies ever bob hoskins was outstanding in it and a young Charlie from the bbc show Casualty was in it too!! The end scene were he is taken by the IRA is brilliant Hoskins emotions in his face as he realises the situation he’s in first Anger then accepts it and finally how clever it was !! Love this film

It’s from a time when films relied on story and acting rather than VFX.

I really liked it, but I’m about 40 years late to the party like a lot of things. Despite how it ended, supposedly they still considered making a sequel. I would have liked to have seen a sequel with Phil Collins.

I love it. I have it ranked fifth behind Godfather 1 and 2, The Irishmen, Once Upon a Time in America, and Goodfellas for gangster and/or mob movies
