So when Sherlock ended, a lot of fans speculated that there was a secret fourth episode the BBC was hiding, and that it was a bad finale on purpose with the TRUE secret finale fixing all the issues and ending on a high note. That didn't happen.
Last year, Stranger Things ended, and a lot of fans speculated there was a secret ninth episode that Netflix was hiding, and that it was a bad finale on purpose with the TRUE secret finale fixing all of its issues. That didn't happen.
My question is has this ever actually happened? They market an episode as the big series finale and its bad or underwhelming on purpose because, secretly, an actual finale was going to air/be released the next week that would fix everything and be a big surprise finale?
To clarify, I do not mean something like a show getting a follow up or epilogue episode years later, I mean that a finale was made at the same time as the final season, and they lied about it, secretly releasing a TRUE final episode at the same time/a little bit later. Like a situation where Stranger Things had its mixed finale, and then Netflix DID "Hey, Secret episode dropping now, we lied about that being the finale to trick you!"
When *Archer* was cancelled after fourteen seasons, they initially did not let on that they had managed to get three more episodes greenlit to serve as a makeshift series finale, which aired a few months after the main season’s cliffhanger ending. I believe this would count.

It wasn’t incredibly widely-known: they didn’t admit that *Archer* had been cancelled for a little while, just having said that it was ending with fourteen seasons, so fans were surprised (and annoyed) when the season ended on a cliffhanger. Then a few months later three more episodes were announced to wrap the series up, to serve as an actual series finale.

I remember a long time ago the Joss Whedon show Dollhouse ran for two seasons. Each season had 13 episodes, but in both cases the final episode didn't air on tv. They were called Epitaph 1 (season 1 finale) and Epitaph 2 (season 2). Both of these episodes took place after the main events of the series, in a post apocalyptic future. These episodes were only released on DVD, and never aired on television.
Also, while it doesn't technically count, Lost did have a mini episode (about fifteen minutes) that was a DVD exclusive. It took place after the final episode. But it was more like an epilogue than a secret finale.

I remember that both Dollhouse and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles were "on the bubble" (as they say) and at risk of cancellation. FOX canceled TSSC, and renewed Dollhouse for season 2 – but basically with the knowledge that it'd be the last season. (I assume they knew how upset fans would get about another Whedon show getting canceled after 1 season... especially when the show's rough start was once again partly due to studio interference.)
Also: token plug for /r/dollhouse :)

Epitaph 2 did air on tv, which would have been a wild swerve for anyone who missed Epitaph 1 originally. But yeah Epitaph 1's whole existence and effect on the show is a wild story from what I remember. Season 1 was contracted for 13 episodes, but Fox hated the pilot and made Joss make a different one, bringing the show down to 12 actual episodes. Then near the end of production, Fox sprung on him that they still expected 13 episodes because some DVD contract they already signed promised 13 episodes, but there would be no extra budget to make one. So they conceived of Epitaph 1 as something that could be filmed as part of the production of the final episodes they were already working on, which is why it is all on one set and uses almost an entirely different cast than the rest of the show. And then supposedly their ability to get that episode together on such little budget is what got the show renewed for a second season at all.
Though really the notable thing here in relation to OP's question is that even Epitaph 1 isn't "secret finale that fixes all the issues of the previous episode" because the the inherent problem with that idea is that it requires the writers to intentionally sabotage their own show in the second to last episode just so they can save it from their own (in this theoretical scenario) intentional bad writing in the finale. What a big waste of time that would be when you could have instead just written two good episodes. Even if one of them was secret. You wouldn't want your second to last episode to be a waste of time so egregious that your finale now needs to be spend undoing it.
we probably will get a show someday with a "true" secret finale in the style these theories always said. If only because the longer the idea exists out there, the more likely someone who finds the idea compelling will end up in a position to actually make something.

The show Game Changer is about people playing games hosted by the Company CEO Sam Reich who can best be described as "what if Jigsaw became a game show host instead of a serial killer". Most of them are super elaborate, have rules and twists that f*** with the players head and are occasionally designed just to spite one specific person involved (example: they play a game of Bingo but the three players involved don't know they're secretly being observed by three other players who are also playing Bingo and trying to manipulate the test players into doing specific things and then THOSE PEOPLE are also being manipulated by a third set of people).
In the Season 7 finale, the cast collectively banded together to trick Sam into his own game hosted by Brennan Lee Mulligan, Sam's favorite victim (Sam once had a game with a secret rule that no matter what or how well Brennan did, he could not win)

3
KnightOfRevanApr 15, 2026

Because it wasn’t an officially scheduled episode. Like I said, the host is also the CEO and he didn’t approve it or fund it or anything. It was a bunch of people going behind his back to create it.
5
chillychiliApr 15, 2026
+3
It was both. In pre-production/production, the production team of the company did lots of secret work and questionable financial things to delightfully surprise the CEO.
For the general audience, an entire ARG was designed for them to discover the existence of the final episode. The ARG was at first not noticed for a long time, but then a hint from social media led the community to solve it in like 48 hours.

You could argue that this also applies to Perfect Hair Forever, twice
* Cancelled after airing its 6th episode on Christmas Day 2005 because the creators were bored with it, without a resolution to the ongoing storyline
* A surprise episode airs on April Fools 2007, with the announcement of a full 16-episode season 2 to follow. This, unsurprisingly, seems to have been a joke as they never made so much as another minute of the show for nearly a decade and the surprise episode wraps up the storyline in comically rushed fashion, with Gerald getting his hair and talking about all the adventures they just went through off-screen.
* 7 years later, *another* surprise episode airs April Fools 2014. This one seems to retcon the 2007 episode and instead wraps up the ongoing storyline of episodes 1-6 in *much* darker fashion.

Eh, I have very mixed feelings about it.
It definitely reframes Terry’s hero journey from purely chosen (“anyone can become Batman”) to some sort of inherited destiny. But the decision didn't strip away Terry's agency. The writers still emphasized his personal effort, training, and growth (and in fact explicitly noted he's not a clone and didn't inherit many of Bruce's qualities).
The main benefit of the change is that it heightens the narrative stakes in the relationship between Bruce and Terry, and allows Bruce to have more satisfying emotional closure in his story arc.
I think it would have been fun if "Project Batman Beyond" was a misdirect, making Terry and Bruce *think* they were related, but in the end we find out it was never actually implemented or the tech didn't work.

I can appreciate why you feel that way, but I don’t think Batman is a good model for the “anyone can be a hero trope” lol. Batman is an incredibly neurotic, obsessed maniac who risks everything for his obsession borne from his trauma - no one should WANT to be Batman like they may want to be say Superman.
For me, that rationale makes it a lot more compelling that someone could be forced onto the path Bruce was on but chose to not let it consume him, to hold the mantle AND live a normal, healthy life in a way Batman (Bruce) never allowed himself to in this canon.
I will say that I’m also sad Bruce ended up the way he did in this timeline, but I don’t find it jarring or out of character.

> I will say that I’m also sad Bruce ended up the way he did in this timeline, but I don’t find it jarring or out of character.
That's why I like to see Batman Beyond as a different timeline from the main DCAU. It's one possible future that Bruce could go down (maybe the weird Bruce Timm one where Bruce gets Barbara pregnant...) but the one from TAS and JL ultimately goes a different path, potentially after seeing his future self in that crossover.

What a fantastic episode. I wasn’t a big fan of the twist reveal, but this episode is a great epilogue to the DCAU, and a love letter to DCAU Batman.
That flashback scene where Batman sits with Ace, an extremely traumatised metahuman child who at that point was essentially a weapon of mass destruction, so she wont die alone is one of the best Batman scenes in any media.
A perfect showcase of his bravery, how his trauma shaped him, and most of all his compassion. Everyone else saw a weapon. Potentially the single most dangerous metahuman on the planet. But all Batman saw was a traumatised child who was scared and needed help.

According to Andy Daly, almost every executive at Viacom wanted to can Review after season 2 because nobody was watching it or even knew it existed, but Kent Alterman (president of Comedy Central at the time, who also started developing Review as an Andy Daly vehicle immediately after being named president) fought back out of pure adoration for the show until an agreement was reached: they could get one 90-minute movie, 2 hour-long episodes, or 3 regular episodes as a finale season.

Bluey
The show was a serious of 7-minute stand alone episodes with the child characters voiced by actual children, not adults pretending to be children.
Because the voice actors would grow up too fast (like all kids) but Bluey and Bingo would stay the same age, this was a problem for taping multiple seasons.
The solution was to record 3 seasons all at once, Peter Jackson style.
This meant from Day 1 the audience knew the end was predetermined. Seasons 1 & 2 had 51 episodes (7 minutes each), but Season 3’s schedule showed 48 seven minute long episodes followed by a final episode running 28 minutes.
As the season progressed, the normally episodic format started hinting at a series arc. Initially the B-plot, it became the a-plot although it wasn’t 100% clear they were related until that extra long 49th episode, “The Sign”.
Suddenly it all tied together. We learned some more about side characters, and the show ended with the family happy, together, and in a place they loved.
Fans loved it too. A quality ending to a truly great show.
The cast and crew did interviews about reaching the end, and that was that. The kids had grown up and their voices had changed. We had reached the end of the pre-recorded dialogue, series over.
Then the next week, with no press or fanfare, a new episode appeared on Disney+. Seven minutes long this bonus episode was one last stand-alone story titled “Surprise!”

In Sign, the Terriers say that their mom really likes Winton’s dad (or maybe vice versa). Later, we see Winton’s dad moving out of the house that the Sheepdogs see from the overlook.

My only example of sort of this is not within television but comics.
The last comic of The Walking Dead was a complete shock to all readers. They didn't advertise it as the last issue at all or that there was anything special about it. In fact they made cover art for the comics following it
(that didn't actually exist!) It's normal in comics for the cover arts of the next few issues to be released. The creator had also said multiple times in interviews that he saw the series as one that would go on forever, even if that was under a different writer.
I remember receiving the issue. It was a double sized issue which was weird as this is something they would normally be shouting about. As I was reading it I was thinking, huh it feels like they are really wrapping things up here... And they were, all of a sudden, The Walking Dead has ended! It was a really awesome surprise tbh. The writer later said he wanted to shock people with the ending like we might be shocked when a main character dies out of nowhere.

The first season of The Sandman dropped two secret episodes a couple of weeks after launch - the animated episode about cats, and the episode about Caliope. Two episodes that weren’t really connected to anything else that had happened that season. But that’s the closest I can think of to a secret finale.

There is reportedly a secret episode of Yellowjackets, filmed and in the can. It stars Jason Ritter, husband of Melanie Lynskey who is one of the shows primary actors. It explains the backstory of a minor, but important character to the show
Due to changes in the show and Juliette Lewis leaving the show, the episode is no longer accurate or canon, so they've never dropped it. But multiple have said it was filmed and exists. Maybe after the finale, we may get to see it, but I'm not hopeful

If you include season finales then Desperate Housewives did this with Season 7. It was marketed as a 2 hour final (episodes 22 and 23) which wrapped up a storyline that brought back characters from the first 2 seasons.
Except all the info that was released was only for episode 22. Then episode 23 happened, the true season finale. (But not the shows series finale).

Babylon 5 had two finales, since the original 5 season plan was getting compressed into 4 seasons as the studio weren't going to go ahead with the 5th season, then they got a 5th season in the end anyway.
So season 4 ends with a look ahead to events 100, 500, 1000 and one million years in the future, and season 5 ends with a 20 year jump as Sheridan comes to the end of his life.
There have also been two DVD/BD releases set after the show as more post-show world building, plus various TV movies (some as setups for spinoffs, others more of a feature length episode).

Partially correct. They released one movie in 1997 that was an alternate ending to the TV show. Then they released 4 REBUILD movies that were complete remakes of the story more in line with what the creator wanted.
“Has been releasing new episodes” makes it sound like it’s been a continual process of releasing new finales. When really it was one new finale and then an alternative story

Had to reformat and repost this because I apparently fucked up the spoiler tag.
My understanding of Rebuild is as follows (spoilers obviously): >!The Rebuild films seem to very heavily imply that the characters are all stuck in this cosmic cycle that just repeats over and over again. In doing so, it also heavily implies that the events of the previous series are still completely canon; they’re just a much earlier loop of said cycle. It ends with the characters seemingly being able to break free from the cycle and live their lives.!<
Obviously I may be completely wrong. This is just how I understood things when I watched the movies a few years ago.
4
haneybirdApr 14, 2026

The start of the Rebuild movies has much of Earth shown to be in a similar state to the end of the original show. Most notable, the oceans turn red towards the end of the show and Rebuild shows them to already be red at the beginning.
The fan theory was that the world got partially reset somehow at the end of the original and Rebuild is a second attempt at saving and/or ending the world, varying by character.

The Stranger Things example is particularly strange. The final episode was probably the strongest in the final season. It did a pretty good job of wrapping things up as they stood and even gave everyone a lengthy sendoff.
Now if the theory was that they had a whole secret \*season\* hiding out somewhere...
The show had a chance to really mix things up with a significant time jump. A gap of a few years would have been absolutely believable from the perspective of the story as well as just how old the kids had gotten. I mean, nothing says 80s films quite as well as having 30 year olds playing high schooler, I admit, but I really was hoping for the show to remind us of just how good that first season was.
The other seasons were not \*bad\*, but probably should have been condensed down to three or maybe four seasons. The first season introduces the world. The second one \*really\* should have introduced the bad guy with the mind flayer still just something hinted at. And the third one should have wrapped it all up
While I absolutely loved the idea of having the Soviets play a secondary baddy role (again, \*very\* 80s), that ultimately went nowhere and they missed out on one of the big late 80s tropes of having the Americans and Soviets at each other's throats until they realize that there is a bigger issue they really should be cooperating on. Instead they were built up and built up, and then...sort of defeated? But not really? They just faded away.
And I suppose in my own meandering way, I think I found the problem: the show had too much filler. Considering how tight the first season was and how few episodes each season had, there really was no excuse for the filler. Nothing about the show was \*bad\*, but just disappointing in the end. And maybe that is the best tribute to the 80s yet.

You could say that it was wrapped up a little too fast and neat with (almost) everyone getting their happy ending. That coupled with Vecna's powers makes it possible to entertain the notion. But crucially, if you were to pull a twist like that, it should be revealed at the end of the "finale" and set up properly. There was no reason to expect it after the fact other than cope.

HUGE SPOILERS AHEAD (I don’t know how to format on mobile)
In the climax of the game/show, the main character gets shot in the head by a traitor. In-game, you can choose to lose the game this way, but if you don’t, it turns out that you had a body double of sorts.
In the anime run, the MC gets shot, and then the credits start playing. I don’t remember how long it took, but the ACTUAL final episode didn’t release the next week. I had a roommate that didn’t know that it wasn’t the end, and she was so pissed.

The simple answer is "no" because it would be ferociously difficult to pull off. Also, it's kind of a gamble to keep your "true ending" distinct from the core product outside of markets that expect it. It's not really a Western concept -- I've only really seen it in stuff like multimedia IPs such as Fate/Stay Night or the SciAdv series (steins gate etc).
Here is the closest I can think of there but it's sort of the opposite: Southland Tales the movie is notoriously convoluted and opaque. The separate prequel graphic novels fill all the gaps and in a way turn the movie itself into a much simpler series of events. A secret ending that only makes *complete* sense if you bother to read the graphic novels.
I suppose the multiple versions of Clue that played in the cinemas way back in the 80s could also count, with three distinct endings designed to both encourage multiple trips and debate between people as to which ending made the most sense. I cannot imagine anyone doing that today without leaks.
"Fix the ending" demands or expectations are as someone else said largely parasocial and entitled. We have fanfic for a reason.
That said Sherlock was Moffat at his absolute worst -- he did everyone dirty by doing the Fall and not explaining it. Sherlock is detective fiction: the reader must be shown howdunnit at some point. Moffat failed the basic requirements of detective fiction with the show. So I don't blame people for hoping for a clearer resolution (I noped out after it was clear he wasn't going to explain the Fall so I don't know if the show got even more obtuse but I'm expecting so).
Anyway twist endings are hard enough these days, what with the hivemind and all. Hidden endings would be... logistically unprofitable.

The closest thing I can think of is that one Avatar The Last Airbender was originally airing they made it seem like The Day of Black Sun was going to be the finale, ie the invasion on the fire Nation that ends up failing. It seemed like season 3 was going to be a few episodes shorter than the previous seasons. At the end of the episode, the invasion fails and they have to retreat after all of that build up, which was a huge shock to anyone watching. But there wasn't a secret finale, it was basically a secret next eight episodes leading up to the real finale.
