"Heartbroken" Mike Mitchell Confirms Exit from 'Twisted Metal' Season 3 Amid Major Creative Shakeup

Posted by willdearborn-

https://youtu.be/DIH9qKhg7EI?t=535 Sourced from "Doughboys" podcast (8m50s) Mike Mitchell, known for his role as Stu on Twisted Metal, says he does not expect to return for the third season of the TV show, citing a creative and **financial decision** by Peacock and producers to move forward without him. Speaking on a recent Doughboys podcast recording, Mitchell described the development as "heartbreaking," emphasizing his attachment to the series and its cast. He confirmed that the show will continue but without his character. Mitchell pointed to broader behind-the-scenes changes as part of the shift. According to his account, the show has undergone significant turnover, including the **departure of the showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith, writing staff, and several department heads**. He expressed disappointment not only for his own exit but also for the loss of his collaborators whom he praised. Despite the setback, Mitchell avoided direct criticism of the production, instead highlighting his pride in the work completed so far and appreciation for his co-stars, including Samoa Joe, who portrays Sweet Tooth. He noted that he had hoped to continue exploring that on-screen relationship in future episodes. His podcast co-hosts reacted more sharply, questioning the decision and suggesting the move could alienate a portion of the show's audience. They argued that Mitchell's involvement had helped draw listeners of Doughboys to the series and contributed to its online engagement. Mitchell also acknowledged his own extensive efforts to promote the show, including themed content tied to the series, calling aspects of the decision "confusing" but ultimately expressing a desire to move forward without lingering sadness or resentment. As of now, no official casting or storyline details have been released regarding how Twisted Metal will address Stu's absence in its upcoming season.

\> including the **departure of the showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith, writing staff, and several department heads** Yeah this does not sound good at all. The first two seasons are brilliant and they had zero right to be as good as they were. A show based on cars with weapons attached fighting for a wish? No way could it work, but it did. And no the showrunner and some writers have left? And a much loved character is not coming back ? hmm this smells like a Witcher moment. BUUUTT only one way to find out, and thts to watch the new series and hope they dont feck it up completely.

Yeah, my thoughts too. I went in expecting it to be pretty rough and ended up liking the 2 seasons we got but this sounds bad in nearly every way if it's true. Before I went in with low expectations due to live action video game adaptations being mostly a miss, and the main plot not seeming to translate well into a show. They made it work once but now I'll be going in with low expectations for very different reasons hoping to be surprised again

FFS the second season was even better than the first, so let's destroy it. Great plan. 👍

Massive egos ruin good things like this.
6
ThePopeofHell Apr 9, 2026 +49
What’s crazy is that they some how made one of the best video game adaptations and they did it with source material that wouldn’t otherwise make sense. The people who were making that show really should have been left alone.

Prudent-Ad-5292 Apr 9, 2026 +43
Honestly, I'm not even going to give it that chance. The writers that were listed as having been removed (mentioned by name on the podcast I believe) are hilarious and have such particular senses of humor. I can't foresee their "flavor" being removed to be a positive addition. Regardless of who replaces them. Also, the show runner had been a guest on their podcast alongside Stephanie Beatriz I believe? And he said the role of Stu was written with Mike Mitchell in mind. Showrunner who brought the show to life is gone, some of the funniest writers pulled, and the person who the role of Stu was made for is no longer in it --- these are irreparable in my opinion. I'd rather not give them the views, and let them know my opinion.. the same way I did with The Witcher, as you mentioned. 😅

Hurrly90 Apr 9, 2026 +9
IM shite on names, so if i see a show i like i cant remeber the writers name, I mean the Scrubs remake has the creators name on at the start of each epidode and i cant remember it. But il take you at yer word, And yeah im worried about the next season but il give it a chance, ffs the only reason i watched this show is cos i gave it a chance.
9
Prudent-Ad-5292 Apr 9, 2026 +13
I'm usually bad on names, but the people that are being removed are quite popular on certain comedic podcasts and are names that stand out to me as people that bring me a smile while I'm stuck at work. >ffs the only reason i watched this show is cos i gave it a chance. Fair, I only gave it a chance because of Shaun Diston, Gilli Nissim, and Mike Mitchell. 😅💀

> Also, the show runner had been a guest on their podcast alongside Stephanie Beatriz I believe? And he said the role of Stu was written with Mike Mitchell in mind. Confirming this, they wrote Mike's character with him in mind.

I seriously went in tepidly to the show on season 1. Just seemed like a no go from jump, odd premise because the game really didn’t have a storyline. Really had no idea where they were going to take it. Heard good things so I signed up for peacock and it somehow, against any odds, really made it work. It was tongue in cheek, didn’t take itself too seriously, and just a fun show that was doing something different. To axe the show runner, fire the writing staff, take out the actors who aren’t immediately recognizable… well you killed the show. I’ll wait on the reviews but I doubt anything good will come of it. Cancelling peacock because it was really the only thing I had it for. Will have to get good traction for me to re up. Just doesn’t seem like it could get back to a fun campy show if they took away the things that made it work in the first place. Odd ass choice.

Seriously, I'm out on the show. Season 2 was amazing and now they've eliminated one of the best characters in the show, gotten rid of the showrunner who lived the source material, and fired all the writers. They may as well have just canceled the whole thing.

A lot of the time they contractually need to raise the writers and actors pay with each season. I’m guessing peacock would rather have the show suck than pay people what they deserve.

Sucks for the Spoonman. Clearly wasn’t expected, because the end of Season 2 makes no sense if you weren’t planning to use Stu going forward. No reason to bring him back to just ditch him the next season
84
ToasterYetiRanch Apr 9, 2026 +410
That really sucks, he was low‑key my favorite part of the show. Losing him and the original showrunner feels like a huge vibe shift. Might be a “wait for reviews” season now.

Samoa Joe has a great voice and it's weird that they dub him.  If they really needed to save money, you'd think they'd fire Will Arnett and let Joe play the role himself.
24
repalec Apr 9, 2026 +15
IIRC Arnett is basically already getting paid since he's producing
15
Dr_Zman Apr 9, 2026 +36
Ugh this just reminded me how stupid it is they need to pay Arnett for this for no damn reason but can't pay an actual actor for a well liked role. Great priorities.

How did they mess this up? I feel like season 2 was pretty loved. The show exceeded expectations in general. Why make such big changes?
46
1000-Iced-Coffees Apr 9, 2026 +7
I loved pretty much every minute of the show until the last episode, up until Minion was revealed in the vehicle-combat tournament with nothing to drive. Other than that nitpick, the tournament wrapped up pretty well. Although IMO it gave complete tonal whiplash for Stu, who arced really well over the show into an amazing tragic ending, to come back to Earth off-screen as a deus-ex-Machina to Minion all within minutes of Minion arriving at the cabin. All also within a few minutes of Stu even being sent to space to begin with I had fun watching the ending even though I didn’t like it as much as S1 through the tournament. I felt like season 2 could have ended very nicely after Calypso’s announcement I’m curious to see how this all impacts where Season 3 was going to go. I was looking forward to seeing more Stu since he was already back
7
Ink_Smudger Apr 9, 2026 +21
Agreed. This was a show that never should've been anywhere near as good as it was, and a big part of that had to be the showrunner and writers and their respect and love for the material. I have a really difficult time seeing that the next season will be anywhere as good, and while I have no idea what led to this shakeup, it's crazy that they're wiling to take that gamble.

Executives are such idiots. Stu is a major character and tossing him aside is absurd. Especially considering the end of season 2. How you can look at a surprise hit and think "let's renew this but fire everyone who made it work" is the most Hollywood thing ever.
59
dravenonred Apr 9, 2026 +194
It shows the complete disconnect between the first two seasons. They could have just left him in space, but they brought him back to be teed up for a major role. We really are going to get Twisted Metal 3 after 1 and 2 again, aren't we.

33
1000-Iced-Coffees Apr 9, 2026 +12
Agreed, the wish should have played out through the end of the finale. It was so strange to bring him back minutes later as a last-second deus-ex-Machina (in the middle of nowhere) against minion. For the main cast which he didn’t like since episode 2 or 3

Bagelofdeath Apr 9, 2026 +50
Over two seasons, it felt like this show was punching above its own weight and it seemed a testament to the cast and crew’s collaborative energy, especially given the closeness of the writers, cast and showrunner. You got the sense they were getting away with something and having a lot of fun doing it, which feels increasingly rare in creative industries. It sucks to see it getting retooled like this and I do wonder if the human/morale cost will be felt in the final product. Anyway: No Stu, No Stream! #Stuicide
50
DVDAallday Apr 9, 2026 +11
Yes! The show's best quality was that you could tell how much fun everyone was having, both the writers and the actors. The show won't really work without that energy.

BOO!!!!!!! Mitch and his relationship to Sweet Tooth and the rest of the cast was arguably the most successful part of the show. Wouldn’t haven’t watched the show without Mike’s character but ended up enjoying it for a ton of different reasons s1 and s2. With overturn of show runner and writing staff I’m not sure s3 will be the same show.

when Stu is too expensive you know this shows next season is in bad shape. let alone the creative team being gutted

I mean in that case he should have just been left in space, as a good tragic ending for him.

TheHamsBurlgar Apr 9, 2026 +5
I too, am heartbroken. What a terrible decision to pull arguably the best character from the show. Shame on you Peacock.

arilau2006 Apr 9, 2026 +6
This seems like a dumb move. Why would they replace the showrunner and writers?

Iamnotabotiswearonit Apr 9, 2026 +5
Horrible choice, stu was the best character. Truly goofball hilarious, his bro connection with sweet tooth was great. Not watching season 3

Razielwolf88 Apr 9, 2026 +6
The show was so good and now I'm concerned the quality is going to dive hard next season and it will get immediately cancelled. Also I really loved stu as a character and am really disappointed he won't be returning, he was such a good counterpoint to sweetooth and really brought alot of the funniest moments to the show. Im getting the feeling that peacock is where quality shows go to die.

So, like every actor who has been a part of a successful show, it was time to renegotiate for a pay raise (that he and the rest of the actors deserve!) and Peacock decided it wasn’t worth it. Shame

Well this sucks.

Mike Mitchell was the only reason i watched two seasons of this show.

art_is_dumb Apr 10, 2026 +6
Are there significant pay bumps at season 3 or something? I do not understand at all why they cut everyone cool loose, I thought having a show people liked was a good thing for a network, but what do I know

Honestly I thought his prize was the perfect ending for the character anyway. Shame it was undone for nothing now

Well. I’m out. Could handle no Stu, but the other changes as well? Nah, I’ll just enjoy the first two seasons and move on with my life

Just have Samoa Joe voice Sweet Tooth instead of paying Will Arnett. That would surely pay for Stu. Stupid, stupid decision by them.

God DAMMIT. My favorite niche genre right now is apocalypse comedy. After watching all of Last Man on Earth, I was so happy that this show and Fallout is still on air. Now I guess I only have Fallout. Time to pitch my "reboot that awful TV show no one has heard about but make it a surrealist comedy" to SyFy. The show is Aftermath, btw. It's terrible. Don't watch it, but read the synopsis and tell me the premise itself isnt absolutely hilarious. Spin the wheel of apocalypse. 10/10 idea. 0/10 execution.

I never dreamed you could make a great show out of the car demolition game I used to play on my PS1 but they did. RIP

MSochist Apr 9, 2026 +3
Man this seriously sucks. This was one of my favorite shows. Season 2 was amazing. Raven was everything I wanted in a character and the last episode with her was glorious, though on my second watch I really liked Mayhem. Sucks too cause they were building up a found family at the end with John, Quiet, and Mayhem. Who even knows if the new writers will keep that going (or if these actors will even return).

This has been such a fun show, season 1 & 2 were actually super entertaining (which I can’t say for many mackie productions). Bummer

DromedaryGold Apr 10, 2026 +2
wtf this was my go to show after long days of work, perfect run time when your tired and don’t have to rewatch the next day cause you fell asleep. It’s funny it has gore, it’s action pack come on man.!!!

mister42 Apr 10, 2026 +2
He was legitimately probably the best actor and the best character on this show. I understand who his costars were, and I still believe this. His character had the only interesting development.
2
Embarrassed_Log1382 Apr 10, 2026 +2
I'm glad Nick (Mitch's cohost on Doughboys) was there to chime in on behalf of his friend and say what was really on our minds. The execs are greedy clueless fools and they can go f*** themselves, sooner rather than later.
2
Financial-Craft-1282 Apr 10, 2026 +2
Man, I just lost all interest in one of the shows I really enjoyed a lot. Losing Mike Mitchell is insane--he was built to be the heart of the show, and some interesting things were gearing up for him. But, also, losing the showrunner and a bunch of writers? The writing was really good. Well, I guess good luck to it. I think these studios literally (not sarcastic at all) underestimate the "Doughboys bump."
2
Greedy_Key_630 Apr 11, 2026 +2
Seems like shaking up the creative team on a show that should've by all metrics and expectations been a massive failure is a bad idea
2
mattpeloquin Apr 11, 2026 +2
Bummer. He’s such a great character.
