Purple Heart, well-educated, and with a decorated career spanning decades of military service. He wasn't a good fit for this admin.

Cheshire_Khajiit Apr 2, 2026 +461
Competence is dangerous when you demand blind loyalty.

SgtSniffles Apr 2, 2026 +113
Gotta be really careful with military purges. Don't want to piss thrm off before you're locked in for life. Otherwise, all the "career" enlisted hoping to keep their heads down and ride this admin out just saw you shit on someone who did everything they thought was right. The intrusive thoughts will get louder when they hear the admin isn't changing.

Iamtheonewhobawks Apr 3, 2026 +28
Purging command of anyone popular or competent enough to influence the military against you is dictator 101. Remember that this administration pulled this shit on day one, a whole year ago, and the army fell in line immediately. Blow up some fishing boats because "drugs" and deliberately follow up with immediate execution of survivors, in total violation of both US and international law? Check. Kidnap the leader of a nation, murdering bystanders and blowing up a bunch of stuff along the way also in full violation of US and international law? Check. Full-on invasion of another nation without provocation or even a goal? Check. You don't have to be a genius or even sane to do an authoritarian coup, you just have to check the same exact boxes all the other ones did. Republicans have been doing so with DT as a battering ram since 2016. If the military was gonna refuse compliance they'd have done it last time Donald ordered something illegal, or the time before that, or the time before that.

ThePrinceofRabbits Apr 2, 2026 +58
If history has taught us anything, the people in our military won’t do shit about any of it.

Yup, just a bunch of jar heads following orders like they're programmed to

Absolute obedience, I think. Loyalty implies the presence of some ethics and virtue; [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loyalty](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loyalty)
21
Adultery Apr 2, 2026 +9
Good point. Trump’s goons are obedient to him, not loyal.
9
TWVer Apr 2, 2026 +44
Something tells me this has to do with the investigation into those AH-64s overflying No Kings Day protesters at very low level and showing up at Kid Rock’s mansion. The US Army initiated an investigation when this came to light, temporarily suspending the involved crews from flight status, which is the regular procedure. Hegseth personally stepped in to overrule it.
44
showhorrorshow Apr 2, 2026 +35
And any commander worth a damn would be quite pissed when discipline is undermined this way. Severely disrespectful.
35
TWVer Apr 2, 2026 +13
That’s exactly why I expect this to be the main point of contention between the now fired general and Hegseth. Pete crossed several red lines there in terms of due diligence, just to highlight fealty is more important than truth to him and the wider administration.
13
TheRuneMeister Apr 2, 2026 +43
Purple Heart, well there is your answer. Only weak pathetic soldiers get hurt in combat. We all know this. Donald Trump made that very clear. (For whomever is reading this in the future, you don’t get to take the above out of context. It is clearly sarcasm despite not having the /s tag)
43
itsaconspiraci Apr 2, 2026 +16
Donald Trump was injured "BEFORE" combat. That is how you do it. You just need to get a pre-service bone spur injury!

Pete Hegseth can't have anyone competent leading the army; Hegseth wants the U.S. to suffer maximum casualties and someone competent would prevent that. Also, Pete probably feels intimidated by people who are better than him in every single way.

I had a similar thought. Having recently rewatched Horrible Bosses, I thought of the Kevin Spacey-boss giving himself the promotion to his own assistant, that Jason Bateman’s character had been working towards. And, seriously, it wouldn’t shock me if it happened in this instance.

It’s so odd an appointed civilian can terminate a career military officer
267
Homunculus_Mindset Apr 2, 2026 +202
Typically, having a civilian in the chain of command is a useful check on militaristic impulses. I guess most admins don't appoint histronic day drunks to positions of immense influence, though.

Obligatory f*** Pete Hegseth, but that's actually pretty normal and is intentionally designed this way. What isn't normal is firing competent officers for bogus reasons.
44
Fugglymuffin Apr 2, 2026 +7
It's extremely important that elected officials can have this much power over members of the military, but like with most things in our government, it's a system which can be abused by bad faith actors.
7
imaginary_num6er Apr 2, 2026 +7
The view should be all these military officers dedicated their service for a country that can fire them just like that. None of it was worth it.

There was a common saying about changing generals in the middle of a war - once had someone refuse to let me off/replace me on a difficult job after a second very significant set back on the basis of that saying and ultimately obtained one of the biggest achievements of my career and the objective that they’d made very significant sacrifices for because of their resolve.  I don’t see the same happening for Kegbreath opting for the alternative strategy.

I am ashamed to see my country being hijacked by a malignant narcissist and an alcoholic Christian Nationalist as the heads of our military. Sadly it's going to require those in the military to stand down and refuse orders. Against all enemies, foreign AND domestic, remember? Folks in uniform, do your duty. You took an oath. Walk your talk. STAND DOWN and REFUSE. The US govt are the bad guys if you haven't noticed yet.

Before you know it, Hegseth will be the only one left to personally give the order for the military to invade Iran, sending service members to get pummeled by explosive drones and ballistic missiles. Gonna be a worse D Day. He should bear that responsibility.
7
TranquilSeaOtter Apr 2, 2026 +3
D Day was at least carefully planned. The invasion of Iran will be a shit show.
3

Is it too far-fetched to think this General may have been the only remaining person that could stop Trump from using nukes in Iran?
5
12_B Apr 2, 2026 +4
My thoughts exactly. Especially the timing of it: after market close (Stock market closed tomorrow for Good Friday). And within a couple hours of Bondi being fired the same day? I have no basis, other than the last few weeks of lived experience, but I think it's within the realm of possibility that someone floated a ultra dangerous idea about increasing the velocity of the war with Iran. And Gen. George flat out said no, not doing it. They are planning something massive for this weekend. And of course it's Easter... It would be the chef's kiss in terms of contrast between Love and War.
4
TheWokenessInjector Apr 2, 2026 +2
Yup. Just like with July 4 and the "Big Beautiful Bill" being signed last year. It's so very twisted.
2

Doubt we are at nuke territory but I am betting he was very much against a ground war and communicated staggering losses if it happened.   Disobedience will not be tolerated with this admin though

5

It isn't going to happen. They already know that the lockstep Republican candidates will be deeply unpopular. MAGA will have to sit back and take it, and hopefully returns to being a minority of noisy, ignorant, bigoted white folks nobody not even the GOP will pay attention to. They had their chance and they showed just how badly they screwed up this nation with their cartoon-like 'culture war'.

How many heads of the Military has he replaced? Gen. C.Q. Brown Jr. (Chairman of the Joint Chiefs), Adm. Lisa Franchetti (Chief of Naval Operations), Gen. James Slife (Air Force vice chief) and now Gen. Randy George (Army Chief of Staff), Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Kruse (head of Defense Intelligence), and Air Force Gen. Tim Haugh (Head of Cyber Command) have all been fired or replaced. The senior JAGs (legal counsel) of Army, Navy and Air Force along with the Marine Corps Staff Judge Advocate to the Commandant were also replaced.

Our seasoned warrior monks are getting cast aside by this imbecile just so he can plant a sycophant in their former position. It's funny. Just when I think our times couldn't get any darker...

starliteburnsbrite Apr 2, 2026 +3
Had to have been the Kid Rock stunt going unpunished that pushed him over the edge. Obviously the war crimes didn't.

birdie_Sea Apr 2, 2026 +3
Oh snap we’re going in on Good Friday. The general warned against it

Too competent?

Republicans could end the insanity any time. They choose not to. All Republicans are fascist domestic terrorists.

mlorusso4 Apr 2, 2026 +2
So is this because that kid rock flyby happened under his watch? Or is it because he investigated and suspended the pilots for doing it (which hegseth quickly reversed)

60% of vetetans voted for this. Maybe the military has a stupidity problem, but who am I to get in the way of someone's dreams?

Another highly qualified person being let go. I bet the replacement will not be a person of color.

Let me guess…he’s competent, has integrity, & and is “woke”!

Gen. Christopher LaNeve, is the Vice Chairman. What's the scoop on him? Seems to have experience. Commanded 82 Airborne.

BRD73 Apr 2, 2026 +2
Hegseth wants to lose more wars. He’s on the right path.
2
Ok-disaster2022 Apr 2, 2026 +2
I really hope he opposed any orders to boots on the ground in Iran. The US does not have the resources for an Iran war unless we started taxing billionaires at WW2 rates.
2
OJs_knife Apr 2, 2026 +2
Guess he wasn’t on board with the invasion of Iran….

gerryf19 Apr 2, 2026 +2
Seemed like he was a regular suck up for the administration....what was his bridge too far?
2
esoteric_enigma Apr 2, 2026 +2
Phew, now that we finally got rid of this experienced general we can finally win this war! /s

Between this and his recent effort to allow soldiers to carry their private firearms on base - I'm really concerned he's setting up for a military coup.

Who wants to bet this has something to do with that stupid helicopter stunt with Kid Rock

Who wants to fight under Hegseth? Raise your hands

OpticalPrime35 Apr 2, 2026 +1
At this point we need competence. Our military is starting to destroy vital civilian architecture in a foreign country for literally no reason. We need people in this government and in the military who are willing to stand up to a Fox News host given a vitally important job for no other reason than he is a proper yes-man. The more people who quit, get fired or retire who are actually good people, the worse off this country is in the very near future.

HighDrive2RightField Apr 3, 2026 +1
Soon then the administration is going to do what he refused to do. Sacrifice American Service Members all to appease Trump. Hegseth is prob maxxed out on lethality and this is war soldiers know what they signed up for.

How some Fox entertainment host can ask someone with this much experience under his belt to step down is just an absolute oversight in policies of this nation. Please may some light shine.

Probably upset he can't just push him out a window like his counterparts

Why the heck did /r/worldnews moderators remove this from that sub-listnook (https://old.listnook.com/r/worldnews/comments/1sat7ml/secdef_hegseth_has_asked_army_chief_of_staff/)? There is something deeply wrong about the moderators of that sublistnook. I've seen this time and time again there and they don't even bother explaining why.

StrengthThin9043 Apr 3, 2026 +1
Purging the military. The hope is that these idiots are just too slow to implement their fascist rule so they are out of power before completion.

Dougalishere Apr 3, 2026 +1
par for the course. If you look at the wikkipedia page for the guy that Kegsbreath replaced its like pages of experience, education, experience leading men and just all round qualifications, then get kegsbreath half a page. ridiculous
