Hegseth Says U.S. Will 'Negotiate With Bombs' Until Iran Cease-Fire Deal Is Reached

What does the ceasefire achieve? Return to what was going on before the war?

Kradget Mar 31, 2026 +903
He has no idea. The administration didn't expect them to resist (which was stupid), and didn't think the strategic threats Iran has access to would be used.  They need *something* to wave around and claim was their objective the whole time, and they need it fast because it's *very obvious* to nearly everyone that this is a massive, dangerous blunder and the longer it goes the more it hurts them. It also really hurts the US, but they only really care about that in the context of its effect on them, personally and politically.

It is so hard for me to adjust to how dumb they are. They really do start with the assumption that their priors are correct, unquestionable. Life then just consists of them doing what they want over and over until they achieve success. “I want to bomb Iran because I hate them so very much. Therefore, this will produce the outcome I desire.”

We're finally seeing the results of Trump surrounding himself with people who only tell him what he wants to hear. There are literal generations of Pentagon assessments about war with Iran and they all conclude that this exact scenario was likely. It is very clear that Hegseth and the people who pushed for the war never actually bothered to consult with the rest of the pentagon.

Joe Kent (the Head of Counter Terrorism, resigned last week) said in an interview that the situation room was prepared with this info, but all decision making was done at Mar-a-Lago instead of the situation room.

The Venetian Republic used to confine its Doge (no laughing, it's from the same route as "Duke") to his Palace for the duration of his rule, with exceptions having to be legislatively approved. Just a thought.

"Bibi said that wouldn't happen!" -Trump or Hegseth, probably Or "That won't stop the crusades!" - Hegseth, probably

>"Bibi said that wouldn't happen!" -Trump or Hegseth, probably Some pentagon sources have said that's not a probably said... that's *almost exactly* what was said.

Israel could care less if the US gets dragged into another 20 year occupation with Iran. As long as they get to knock a regional rival off the board. The fact Trump put tons of trust in Bibi is insane. It just shows how much influence world leaders have over him during private one on one calls.

> never actually bothered to consult with the rest of the pentagon. They did though. General Caine went to the media weeks before the decap strike for exactly this, saying that the US would lose a war with Iran if one started (as he was probably being told to plan one and begin it by the admin), and the media didnt care and it was barely news.
21
Nyaos Mar 31, 2026 +7
You're not wrong, I should have said "never bothered to listen" instead.

The modern USA superpower is so powerful, wealthy and advanced that it is almost impossible to bring it to it's knees. It has taken an almost impossible confluence of incompetence, ignorance, malignant narcissism, naked corruption, lies and arrogance, while supported by power hungry amoral sycophants and a rabid hateful selfish cult to bring it this low. Whether it can correct course or continue to sink into the abyss is still to be seen.
3
Halgy Mar 31, 2026 +48
They are so many different levels of dumb stacked on each other. It was dumb to think Iran needed to be attacked. It was dumb to think Iran's regime would fall from bombing. It was dumb to think Iran wouldn't retaliate with drones. It was dumb to think the strait of Hormuz would stay open. ...but to think all of these dumb things and the same time? Now that is special.
48
BoldestKobold Mar 31, 2026 +20
Mind you I was watching a youtube video earlier on from a pop-sci economics creator, who was pointing out that in many respects increased oil costs help some very specific sets of companies in the US as overall oil prices increase. The creator was speculating that there are some people behind the scenes who have the ear of the Trump administration that are totally happy to see the mid east face production/delivery challenges. Doesn't mean Trump and co aren't dumb. They most certainly are. But they could be being intentionally manipulated by a number of groups who benefit from this war (including Russia and certain US oil interests).
20
Thisisntalderaan Mar 31, 2026 +12
There is a much greater than zero chance that he is propping up the USA oil companies with these actions. With the exception of the post-covid bounce in 2022, oil has been performing "poorly" since 2015. Oil at 100+ means more projects can generate profit when some of them would lose money at 60.

>“I want to bomb Iran because I hate them so very much. Therefore, this will produce the outcome I desire.” "And we will keep bombing them even though we are projected to be critically low on THAAD interceptors, ATACMS ground-attack missiles, and Precision Strike Missiles, and approximately 4500 Tomahawk systems left, which have a 1.5-2 year build time."
29
Flatus_Diabolic Apr 1, 2026 +18
It’s dumber than that. Trump went into this saying his goal was regime change, meaning that his enemy knows this war is existential. If I pull a gun on you and say “I want your money,” then you’ll probably hand over your wallet because you don’t want to die. If I pull a gun on you and say “all I want is for you to die,” then I’m signalling there’s nothing you can do to appease me or avoid conflict, so you need to resist me with everything you’ve got because you’re a dead man if you don’t. So now Trump shooting his big fat mouth off has locked Iran into a war they believe that there’s no way they can stop fighting. What’s even worse, the US started this latest war less than 24 hours after a diplomatic breakthrough that signalled that the Iranians might have been willing to return to a nuclear deal like the one negotiated under the Obama administration. The fact that the US did this as soon as it looked like they might *get exactly what they SAID they wanted* means that they (or more likely Israel) were never interested in a negotiated peace agreement. So now that they’re pushing for negotiations again is totally untrustworthy. Back to my “gun” metaphor, what’s happened here is Trump pointed a gun at Iran and demanded money, Iran said “ok, sure, here’s my wallet, just be chill” and then Trump went “damn. You weren’t meant to agree to that” and so he just started shooting anyway, but he’s so wildly inept that the only thing he managed to shoot was his own feet. Now he’s screaming like a toddler and demanding a ceasefire so he can go to the hospital and get patched up then come back and try again with a bigger gun. Mister “art of the deal” has so thoroughly destroyed his own credibility as a person that Iran can negotiate with that I just can’t of any way for this war to be resolved through diplomacy not unless China starts making threats big enough for Trumps cowardice to overrule his wounded ego. That possibility aside, I’m guessing this will pan out like every other war the US has fought in the last 3/4 of a century: their military will kick a shit-ton of ass, but they’ll totally fail to achieve any of the war’s strategic or political objectives. In this particular case, I don’t think it even had any.   ^(.. well, besides perhaps helping an obese octogenarian who can’t get it up anymore to feel virile and manly because of how many people he can kill)
18
totalwarwiser Mar 31, 2026 +36
It looks like US atacked Iran so that Israel could do a huge land grab uncontested by the regional major power. So the whole world gets majorly fucked because Israel is playing Grabby Empire.

I think the idea that they do more than hate people who are in their way is giving them too much credit
12
AOChalky Mar 31, 2026 +11
>I want to bomb Iran because I hate them so very much. Not sure If they really hate Iran, but I guess they just want to pick a "weak" enemy, start a fight, and declare a quick win. Iran probably looked weak to them so they thought they could do it in one shot, just like Venezuela. Unfortunately, the last step did not quite go as they were expecting. The same thing as their threats to Cuba. They need to start a conflict to declare victories larer on. The more war you start, the more peace you make yikes.
11
tatofarms Mar 31, 2026 +53
I think it's even dumber than that. They expected locals to install a Western-friendly government while we were bombing them.
53
Kradget Mar 31, 2026 +26
I don't give them credit for even thinking that far ahead
26
SenselessNoise Mar 31, 2026 +6
https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/22/us/politics/iran-israel-trump-netanyahu-mossad.html Bibi probably sold Trump on this idea (and Qatar and KSA encouraged it), only to have it catastrophically (and predictably) blow up in their faces. Now this snafu is more -fu'd than it was before with Hormuz f****** with oil/gas prices in a midterm election year, and Trump is ratcheting the propaganda to eleven while he tries to figure out an exit strategy that won't make him look weak or stupid (hint: there really is none). And now because of that oil/gas f******, he can relax sanctions on countries buying Russian oil because of the kompromat they (and now apparently China) have. Hence why his position on China has become as soft as his position on Russia compared to last year and Trump 1. All that to say Trump tanked oil prices to manipulate the market and as a distraction from the Epstein files.

Venezuela was too successful. The those stooges thought they would just wander into every hornets nest quagmire and replace a few leaders and be done with it.
55
Mazon_Del Mar 31, 2026 +23
Venezuela wasn't even actually that successful, all they did was take out the guy at the top. But governments like that aren't JUST one person, the next person in line stepped in and it was basically business as usual with a few half-assed overtures made.
23
Iron0ne Mar 31, 2026 +15
It was enough for a perp walk photo op and Venezuela was never going to fight back so it was a win in their book.

Plus that dumb broad gifted her Nobel peace price to trump. That's what he wanted.

They were expecting it to go like Venezuela. But this regime is much more ideological and defiant. And they have more leverage.
22
rd1970 Mar 31, 2026 +11
Even if they find an objective, claim victory, and leave - Iran isn't going to let this go. America and Israel killed some of the most prominent people in the country. It would be the equivalent of Al Qaeda killing D*** Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld during 9/11. American oil companies and allies in the region have already lost billions, and will continue to do so until Iran decides otherwise - which might not even happen this year. During that time Iran can dictate any terms they want from their neighbors - which probably includes American military bases and oil companies being kicked out of the Middle East.

Depends on when you ask really. It's all bluster, bullshit and billionaire backhanders
96
LeftToaster Mar 31, 2026 +32
No - declare victory, but return to much worse than before. No deal to prevent Iran from producing or acquiring nuclear weapons, Strait of Hormuz closed off to shipping, oil price above $100/bbl, Israel Gazafying Lebanon, a worse Ayatollah Khamenei in control of Iran, dozens of dead American servicemen, thousands of dead Iranian civilians, millions or billions of dollars of infrastructure damage in the region, billions of dollars per day wasted on a stupid war of choice, most of the world laughing at the US.

Honestly, more people are rooting for Iran than the US at this point.
52
Mr06506 Mar 31, 2026 +21
No fan of the Iranian regime, but it's hard to root for a bully. Best possible outcome would be regime change is somehow achieved in Iran, but America gets a bloody nose and taken down a peg or two in the process.
21
iamtherik Apr 1, 2026 +16
best possible outcome it would be a regime change in the u.s. and the dissolution of the "republic". Also a regime change in iran :3
16

They're a diehard theocracy , abominal record on human- and womensrights, they just shot 20-30k protesters,... I do not agree with what the USA and Israel are doing but rooting for the Iran regime is insane.
21
jellyhessman Mar 31, 2026 +13
And they got their entire leadership killed in a surprise attack in the middle of peace negotiations that by all reports were going incredibly well. Kinda makes it hard to ever trust the US after that.
13
earlandir Apr 1, 2026 +11
This is a terrible understanding of what is being said. No one is rooting for the Iranian regime. They are rooting for the Iranian people. No one wants USA to replace the Iranian regime with an equally shitty one like they've done in countless other countries. Best case scenario is USA gets put in their place and Iran gets a more progressive government.

Gaddafi and Saddam proved that already, this is just reinforcing the point, with an added bonus of showing that agreements made with the US are as worthless as the paper they are written on once a administration changes.

Typical case of americans never taking anything seriously until it hit them right in the face.

Remember those bumper stickers in the 90s that said "bombing to get peace is like f****** to get virginity"? All the gulf states have to do is say "we will spare ships for oil not sold in USD."  The US spends more on interest on the 38 trillion dollar deficit than on the military.  And thats from the country that spends more on military than the whole world minus like 4 countries. A weaker USD makes interest payments way more expensive.
3

That’s not negotiating. That’s dropping bombs. It’s like these chucklefucks don’t even care to pretend how to use words good.
3
Firm_Print6463 Mar 31, 2026 +3
Pete Hegseth, Time Magazines War Criminal of the Year. (It was a tight race this year)
3
RunsWithPhantoms Mar 31, 2026 +3
I guess if I were drunk af 24/7 this would make sense to me too.
3
RyanEversley Mar 31, 2026 +3
This dude is SUCH a wanker.
3
njman100 Mar 31, 2026 +3
Hegseth is a F****** Moron
3
Yiplzuse Mar 31, 2026 +3
On brand. Bombs are one million each, words are free so this is on brand for people who added 2 trillion to the debt slashing government competence in one year.
3
Auerbach1991 Mar 31, 2026 +3
He’s such a low life piece of shit
3
p_2923 Apr 1, 2026 +3
How many American tax dollars per bomb dropped?
3
Mechasteel Apr 1, 2026 +3
That's how not being in a ceasefire works. Except for that aircraft carrier which spent 30 hours negotiating a ceasefire with its laundry room.
3
Lastrites Apr 1, 2026 +3
It's amazing to see a body with no brain still move around the room for pictures.
3
srnx Apr 1, 2026 +3
Kegsbreath is such a bad f****** joke. He is what MAGA thinks tough guys are and its so, so sad.
3
R3AP3R51 Apr 1, 2026 +3
NeGoTiATe WiTh BoMbs. Big boy words.
3
rohobian Mar 31, 2026 +6
History tells us this is ALWAYS successful. I'm sure this will go JUST FINE.
6
K-12Slave Mar 31, 2026 +5
Sounds expensive.
5
dethnight Mar 31, 2026 +2
So the objective to this whole thing was a cease fire? It's absolutely insane that we still don't know what the objectives are for the war, don't these people work for us?
2
arvigeus Mar 31, 2026 +2
Are they playing “good cop, bad cop”? Trump boast about how splendid negotiations are going, while Hexsex is all about bombing?
2
DriftMantis Mar 31, 2026 +2
I'm sure relentlessly bombing them will get them to want to make a cease fire deal. This is truly a genius grand strategy on display here.
2
Gentleman_Nosferatu Mar 31, 2026 +2
Ass.
2
You_are_the_Castle Mar 31, 2026 +2
So stupid
2
SuperRektT Mar 31, 2026 +2
But didn't they already win? BIG?
2
firepunchd Mar 31, 2026 +2
Sounds like Putin
2
ArchAngel621 Mar 31, 2026 +2
They think things are back with the Middle East before. Just see how things are once all the infrastructure is destroyed. It’ll be a major humanitarian crisis and prime recruiting for terrorist groups.
2
Buttermilk-Waffles Mar 31, 2026 +2
Just what I would expect a drunk that beats his wife to say
2
foolishdrunk211 Mar 31, 2026 +2
“The beatings will continue until morale improves “
2
Modest_Muse_ Mar 31, 2026 +2
What a very christian thing to say.
2
Fartenstein65 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Pete needs to be there right at the front of the line with ground troops.
2
Islandboi4life Mar 31, 2026 +2
This is the exact same situation of punching someone in the face and telling that person to stop defending themselves.
2
Ok-Crow-1515 Mar 31, 2026 +2
The guy is an embarrassment. Could anyone imagine being a senior career officer and having to take orders from and listen to this clown speak.
2
borisRoosevelt Mar 31, 2026 +2
Spoken like a true dipshit
2
SlowCrates Mar 31, 2026 +2
Every thing they do and every word they shit out of their moronic, fascist mouths is just creating more future terrorism. F*** Trump and his entire bullshit possy.
2
SUBLIMEskillz Mar 31, 2026 +2
Def not a war tho
2
4FriedChickens_Coke Mar 31, 2026 +2
The US has burned any shred of credibility/respectability to the ground in record time. Truly impressive
2
Cerraigh82 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Are there any sane people left in this administration?
2
BruteBassie Mar 31, 2026 +2
I heard his favorite song is "Bomb Iran" by the Booze Boys
2
drums_addict Mar 31, 2026 +2
What nuanced tactician...
2
To-Far-Away-Times Mar 31, 2026 +2
Was Hegseth negotiating with elementary school girls when he murdered 150 children with a tomahawk missile in an attack on a school that had no military or strategic value? He sure is tough when he is “Lethality Maxxing” on defenseless and innocent children. He should have the opportunity to show everyone what a badass he is in prison. I heard they give sickos who hurt children special treatment there.
2
filmguy36 Mar 31, 2026 +2
When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Or in his case: a girls school
2
Durzel Mar 31, 2026 +2
Hegseth is like a cartoon villain lol
2
BrofessorFarnsworth Mar 31, 2026 +2
What kind of f****** clown talks like that
2
BrownWrinkles Mar 31, 2026 +2
That's just war, you simple f***.
2
Cdcgirl2 Mar 31, 2026 +2
He’s snorting coke.
2
mfhtotheizzo Mar 31, 2026 +2
This guy is such a try-hard dork. A wannabe tough guy who thinks his morning CrossFit workout qualifies him to lead soldiers.
2
therapeutic_bonus Mar 31, 2026 +2
That’s not called negotiating…
2
in2xs Mar 31, 2026 +2
War loving Christians. Good job MAGA.
2
hornyandwettt Mar 31, 2026 +2
He meant to say he’s BOMBED
2
CMG30 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Lol, Hegseth thinks a regime that murders it's own people cares about bombs. The war has already given them relief from sanctions and a new source of revenue by tolling the strait.
2
New-Equal8039 Mar 31, 2026 +2
D-bag talk.
2
Avocadonot Mar 31, 2026 +2
Tell that to the market lol. War is over apparently
2
grodyjody Mar 31, 2026 +2
Iran said keep blowing up the useless stuff, we will let you know when we are ready to attack
2
monkeypickle8 Mar 31, 2026 +2
He's absolutely clueless, this is why you have a general run the military not a TV host that didn't break captain.
2
SnooChickens1534 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Was he not hugged as a child . He comes across a deranged moron
2
HiFiGuy197 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Oh yes, we bombed Vietnam into submission.
2
NiranS Mar 31, 2026 +2
How do you negotiate with an untrustworthy enemy? The U.S. has lied every step of the way. It started negotiating with Iran, then killed all its leaders, and then started a war. Oh, sorry, a military exercise unbeknownst to all participants except the perpetrators.
2
armhat Mar 31, 2026 +2
This dude must have the absolute smallest p****.
2
ryo3000 Mar 31, 2026 +2
????? That's not negotiating that's just... War The war will continue until the war is over isn't exactly a f****** brilliant plan
2
fartsonyourmom Mar 31, 2026 +2
Does no one on this administration know how to buy clothes that fit?
2
Fit-Significance-436 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Operation Epic Shitshow
2
howescj82 Apr 1, 2026 +2
He’s got 30 days before the law says Congress must either give their approval or else our forces must withdraw. He’s “negotiating with bombs” because he’s desperate to end this before the law forces a withdrawal.
2
CMGCookie Apr 1, 2026 +2
Hey Heggy. Make much money on those defense stocks your broker put you into before the Iran war? Did ya? Let those bombs fly. Right Heggy Baby?

This is why a low-IQ alcoholic major might not be the ideal choice for Secretary of Defense.
2
ThatIsAmorte Apr 1, 2026 +2
Didn't Hitler say something similar about Poland?
