The US isn't a signatory to the Ottawa Mine Ban treaty & the reporting claims these are anti-tank mines rather than anti-personnel mines banned by the Ottawa Treaty. Still a horrible thing to do because civilians can and will die from disturbing the mine or being too close when its self-destruct timer runs out, but it's not technically a war crime.

The "They didn't sign XYZ treaty so it's not *technically* a war crime" thing is such a liminal point. It's like pointing out that saudis who have unconsentual sex with their wives aren't technically rapists because that isn't legally r*** there. Does it matter that it's not technically a crime if that has no bearing whatsoever on the effects or morality? Not really.
