Help me melt my dad’s face off

Posted by armerncat

My dad loves rock n roll. He grew up in the 60’s-70’s and was in a lot of cool places at the right time. He saw ZZ Top in a dive bar before they were big. He was neighbors with a band called The King’s Ransom and used to watch them practice in their garage. His all time favorite is probably the stones, but he also loves led zep, Foghat, The Who, Deep Purple, Cream, CSNY, CCR, Styx, etc. etc. He constantly complains that “rock is dead” etc. But his biggest gripe is that no song or guitar riff has given him “the feeling” since then. Granted, he’s in his 70’s and his search for songs is limited to the radio and maybe youtube. I’m not as into rock as I’d like to be so I could only throw GVF and this band called The Kicks his way, he likes em fine, but no “feeling” I know there’s talent out there and bands making great music, but I’m having a hard time finding some stuff that aligns with his taste and has some sick riffs or whatever to try to give him “the feeling” What do y’all think? Especially interested in hearing what you think if you have similar tastes or whatever, but any are welcome! Thanks!! 🤘🏽 ETA: Thanks everyone! Edit 2: Wow, my first award! Thanks!

Saw them in Berkley and it was one of the best concerts I've seen in a while. I go to around 25~ concerts every year.

Were they with King Buffalo? Saw both of them in Toronto this past December and it was phenomenal https://preview.redd.it/2trbvls8cprg1.jpeg?width=1512&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=da35e545522957976b8fdc310fb2816afb09b47d

My dad is 71. One night we were sipping beers and he says to me he says; "no one has an organ in their band anymore do they?" I put on Live From Brussels and I don't think he has stopped listening to them since.

Get him onto Church of the Cosmic Skull. The songs Go By the River or Mountain Heart as a starter.

If OP wants to f****** MELT his dad's face with a Queen's of the Stone Age, then he's gotta go with A Song For the Dead. Tons of great little lead guitar parts, killer drums courtesy of Dave Grohl (intro ripped off from Black Flag, but we'll call it an homage). The vocals (Mark Lanegan, he only sings on a handful of QOTSA songs) might be a bit gruff for him though. If he can handle the vocals, throw Millionaire (find the full title yourself, lol) at him. That song f****** slays. If he likes ZZ Top, you can also point him in the direction of Burn the Witch, by Queens of the Stone Age as well. The lead guitarist (Billy Gibbons) plays the solo on the song, and the whole song has a super unique vibe and stomp to it. I'll toss out one more QOTSA song, God is in the Radio. Again, Mark Lanegan singing, but not nearly as gruff. Everything about this song is a fuckin vibe.

That whole album is damn near flawless start to finish.

east_van_dan Mar 28, 2026 +17
Nick Oliveri sings millionaire, not Lanegan. He also sings six shooter, gonna leave you and another love song. All the screamer songs are Oliveri.

This one will melt his face: the riffs, the deep, dirty grooves, the sustained intros, **the heaviness.** Go for ‘Welcome to Sky Valley’ or ‘Blues for a Red Sun’. He’ll renew his faith.

I am 56 and in the top .1% of Van Halen listeners worldwide. I know your dad's jam. I signed up for this service because rock. I have no idea how any of this works. [https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7alB45GhacV5Kz6K5fwxUR?si=EXfOS1q9Q4SywAjv5etfog](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7alB45GhacV5Kz6K5fwxUR?si=EXfOS1q9Q4SywAjv5etfog) Death By Rock And Roll - The Pretty Reckless ( and you get to be the person who drops the Cindy Lou Who trivia, which is always fun) Clutch - Electric Worry Them Crooked Vultures - Entire Album but for a single song go with Nobody Loves Me and Neither Do I. Bonus points because the bass player is John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin I Want You -Kenny Wayne Shepard Lucky Dutch - Radio Moscow Timebomb - Old 97s The Mercury - Turnpike Troubadours Mortgage On My Soul - JD Simo (that rythm section on this song. So f****** groovy) California Sober - Billy Strings (featuring Willie Nelson) The Devil Wears A Suit And Tie - Colter Wall Slow Burn - Kacey Musgraves If We Were Vampires - Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit These Stones Will Shout - The Raconteurs The Saint Of Lost Causes - Justin Townes Earle. Sinister Kid - The Black Keys Midnight In Harlem - Tedeschi Trucks Band Black Snake - Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears Figure It Out - Royal Blood Rolling 7s - Dirty Honey I Got Heaven - Mannequin P**** Getting Ready - Patty Griffith Won't Be Home - Old 97's Stomp And Holler - Hayes Carll Choctaw Bingo - James McMurtry (that guitar track. mmmm) Early Morning Shakes - Whiskey Myers Piece Of Me - Lady Wray Again - Girl Tones mangetout - Wet Leg Where Is Love - The Salty Suites Hear The Thunder - The Salty Suites (That album is my true hidden gem. I like every song. Exactly none of you have heard them. Ok, maybe 2. They had a thing, saw them live, fantastic. I bought the CD and it just stayed in the changer) Nada - The Refreshments (Fizzy, Fuzzy, Big and And Buzzy is my favorite album because of time and place. It was stolen by no less than 4 women I dated post-divorce 1993. No skips. All fun. I know it's 90s but it fits this list like a buttered glove) Bleach Blonde Bottle Blues - Larkin Poe (sorry I forgot this one first pass, this is the riff he needs. these ladies have the whole package) Witches Burn - The Pretty Reckless (I think is a better song, but DBR&R is pure FM rock) She's a f****** star. This is the song in Spain with the bat landing on her. Like being blessed by Ozzy. Paris (Ooh La La) - Grace Potter and The Nocturnals This version of Old Enough - [The Raconteurs feat. Ricky Skaggs and Ashley Monroe ](https://youtu.be/1qahZ-whM6o?si=pIwButWzPrCo-ydv) Arkansas - Chris Stapleton (yeah, I'm done, too, but this one hits it. I always feels like mom says we've got Bob Seger at home when I listen to him) He'll like a couple of those. The best place for him to find new music right now is the Alt-Country scene. Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, Jason Isbell are all fantastic. Not heavy, though, but if the Stones are his jam, these guys are making quality music. I'm thinking Wet Leg might be my new jam. Check them out. edit: Just because I get my moment, I think Justin Townes Earle's discography is the most slept on art in my dad rock manifesto. And Them Crooked Vultures is the best rock album this century. It's easily my favorite "supergroup" album. just adding stuff to the spotify whatever now

Isbells stuff with the drive by truckers shouldn’t be ignored as well. Live isbell rips. So does sturgill

Love Clutch. I know it’s not for everyone, but I absolutely love Spacegrass
39
Mr_Lucidity Mar 28, 2026 +10
Dude I loved clutch back in the 00s... Then just, I dunno, stopped looking for new music, streamed their old albums and didn't look for new stuff... Omg I just recently discovered all the awesome stuff they've done the Last 10ish years and they are still rocking! Psychic Warfare,Book of bad decisions, slaughter beach... Dude they still rocking it. I've been jamming bad decisions over and over at the gym this last week.
10
MHanky Mar 28, 2026 +11
Clutch is my favorite rock band of all time. Dad needs to listen to [Gravel Road](https://youtu.be/qAnDTkT3pDc?si=wc7HdEjJCAjU4Mb5) and boogie down.
11
SirReginaldPoshtwat Mar 28, 2026 +5
"First thing that I did Was buy a pack of smokes Check into a motel And consult my horoscope." Their lyrics always crack me up (in a good way). Like Hunter S. Thompson singing for Black Sabbath.
5
RufiosBrotherKev Mar 28, 2026 +32
Yea show them [Sturgill Simpson- Call To Arms on SNL](https://youtu.be/qsrsrOB0zNQ?si=H2pDQcrB9aMgXa0z). Mans known for alt country but that is one of the best Rock n Roll performances of all time
32
Never_that_bad Mar 28, 2026 +3
This is the way. Anytime I talk about Sturgill I just show them that. Little Joe will go down as an all time great. When I saw them open up for Jason isbell at the Ryman. Good ol flashy Jason came out and tried to top Joe’s guitar playing. Wasn’t even close. Jason’s still great…

RockerElvis Mar 28, 2026 +27
Sturgill Simpson SOUND & FURY is the best rock album in decades. He is more than country. I am a similar age, and I have been listening to a lot of Wet Leg recently.

>I am 56 and in the top .1% of Van Halen listeners worldwide. If true *holy shit.* I listen to some relatively unknown bands a lot and I'm not in the top half a percent for any of them.
14
Meet_the_Meat Mar 28, 2026 +4
I think that, over time, I've just upvoted every single song in their first 6 albums except Jump and I'll Wait. So, they just are in heavy rotation, and I need music to cover up the tinnitus while I work, so I probably have 20 songs roll through a day.
4
ElDeguello66 Mar 28, 2026 +5
California Sober is a fantastic tune, but Away from the Mire would be my intro to Billy Strings recommendation. Great lyrics, strong bluegrass playing, plus some shredding. The whole Billy experience in a song.

Some bands to check out: [Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats](https://youtu.be/6zDT_uGYdVs?si=_iP-1C5mt4eubdE5) [Dinosaur Jr](https://youtu.be/oo6qFV3Mdts?si=OeeiXjaCYHNSwEeM)(still going strong after like 40 years) [Gin Lady](https://ripplemusic.bandcamp.com/album/before-the-dawn-of-time) [Wucan](https://youtu.be/jGj6XAhalOo?si=Il4Wj3D4NFle6bwN) Also want to highlight BORIS from Japan. They have an extensive discography that ranges from heavy, droning sludge to electronic dance music, but they have some records he might like: [Akuma No Uta](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kNbA5GeCWvdw7h1FqYtc6S35TrSM8Oeho&si=FX44ebN4mMdhFeZ1) is my personal favourite. Inspired by 70's hard rock like Deep Purple and Motorhead, it has a very primitive recording quality that I love. The first song on the album is a 10 minute intro, so skip to the second song, [Ibitsu](https://youtu.be/6T_mxtyPjDQ?si=oIj1VFJvKj5ajTog), if you're feeling impatient. [Heavy Rocks (2002)](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nl5b0CPtocpnrPMK-19EcUHhOnC0zPyIM&si=mzMxT5z3i5TfAAla), [Heavy Rocks (2011)](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nZQDv-R96UHN6TcP1v9I0ICpmHYglr9HM&si=1m9aslyWgfEtQPRF), and [Heavy Rocks (2022)](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nl5b0CPtocpnrPMK-19EcUHhOnC0zPyIM&si=9BwPr5dXhVD_oY87) all explore sounds of hard rock and early heavy metal.

I had never heard of them before until I saw them open for The Black Keys at the Cleveland Agora in 2007 tripping balls, and was completely blown away. They are true psychedelic rock.

I'm 61 and love these threads. Drive By Truckers - Where the Devil Won't Stay, Putting People on the Moon. Cottonseed. I love everything Truckers; these are a couple of good jams. Lucero - One Last FU, Macon if We Make It. Love everything Lucero, too. Some can be a little country sad, but I feel like Ben Nichols is the next Springsteen, lyrically. Government Mule - Anything. Seriously. Warren Haynes can do no wrong, He played with the Allman Brothers forever, Your dad will love them. Their cover of Prince's Beautifully Broken is chefs kiss. Banks of the Deep End just hits. Larkin Poe - 2 sisters just jamming the blues. Fantastic. The Record Company - Life to Fix, Off the Ground, Rita Mae Young. High energy 3 piece band with a lot of talent. Frank Turner - Recovery, Ever I Stray A couple of dark horses for him to check out: Low Cut Connie - Beverly Dexter and the Moonrocks - Sharp, Behave, Birds and the Bees. My kid turned me on to them. We went to see them in concert and it was a great show

He might like it. I'm a headbanger from way back. Zeppelin, Who, Ozzy and that song blew me away the first time I heard it.

Was just about to post about them. No Good, Mr Holden is also great. I saw them open for CKY back in the '00s and they kicked my ass.

dirt_shitters Mar 28, 2026 +5
The whole hisingen blues album fuckin rips. Too much is not enough is a killer song as well. Graveyard was the band I was going to suggest. Witchcraft is great and maybe red fang as well.

The Mara Volta - Deloused in the commatorium
12
hardboiledhank Mar 28, 2026 +5
I had to scroll way tooo far to find the mars volta recommendation. Some of their songs are whack, sometimes the vocals need to be toned down a notch, but their good songs are amazing and hard to top. They also require some patience but it always pays off

bloomsday289 Mar 28, 2026 +7
The only 2 bands I've seen in the last decade that I thought were worth a shit live AND have a rock feeling were Nada Surf and The Shins (live they sound nothing like the albums and are much heavier and rockier than you'd think). But yeah, my dad grew up poorly supervised in LA in the 70s. It's not even fair to try to talk music with him.

Ghost

TeddyBear666 Mar 28, 2026 +17
Honestly this is a really solid pick. Ghost take a huge part of that old school rock vibe and give it a breath of fresh air. I'd pitch either Spillways, Square Hammer or Peacefield as a first listen.
17
frankyseven Mar 28, 2026 +5
Big Wreck is very much in this same vein with a different sound. Not so much inspired deeply by classic rock, not copying classic rock, but sounding like a classic rock that never stopped evolving through everything since.
5
buddytattoo Mar 28, 2026 +6
Absolutely! I’m in my 50’s, my daughter has taken me to two Ghost concerts and they are fantastic!

The Lateralus album from start to finish goes hard, and imo isn’t too out there for someone new to the genre to easily explore.
14
ssort Mar 28, 2026 +5
This is the first band I thought of for this prompt, the music is good, the guitar rifs are pretty iconic, the base work is excellent and you won't find a better drummer who can simply amaze even non rock or even non music people with his elite polyrythem skills. Plus the music has a message and makes you think. So as a guy in his late 50's I can't recommend a better band for a guy in his early 70s that loves rock. If he loves rock, he should love Tool. Suggestions: Pneuma - Drum video to see Danny Carey in action, Right in Two, AEmia (spelling?), Stinkfist, Sober, Invincible etc, almost every song they put out is decent at least with tons of bangers over their 30 year run.

Try some Big Wreck. I've often said that they can sound like a modern Led Zeppelin, especially with a song like [Hey Mama](https://youtu.be/l7YXx2ztZa8?si=J29xGXizxiVIMDPx). If you want killer riffs, you'll love [I Digress](https://youtu.be/Sr1Bwr_XkgM?si=OnXes-S_-SX81Nzi) and [Ladylike](https://youtu.be/lcttmiWL9xo?si=0TL9_tvGRbIVbXgg). If you want a power ballod [Blown Wide Open.](https://youtu.be/JwjHPtRFeqs?si=FdQ3uylBbIFiF4MY) If you want a SVR mixed with David Gilmore [Ghosts](https://youtu.be/3uYzg6dgoDU?si=PTwIOwzbwAGQXH6z) Finally, if you want some slide guitar [Albatross](https://youtu.be/XXY8PrlTgjY?si=V8kzofj3ZnDSxVoz) and [Overemphasizing](https://youtu.be/ci7wow8xaHs?si=DbtId3ZzfoUC2Vsf) Enjoy

Uncle Tupelo and/or Son Volt. Or solo Jay Farrar. Very much Stones adjacent

gary clark jr is one of the best blues guitarists of the modern generation. insane riffs / songs. also… black pistol fire, royal blood, tame impala, not my favorite but greta van fleet or jesse welles will scratch that itch.

Thoracic_Snark Mar 28, 2026 +4
The new Black Crowes album (Ive listened to most of it) had elements that sounded a lot like Stones deep cuts to me. I'd be interested in what he'd think of Devin Townsend. His catalog is deep and extremely varied, and admittedly a lot of his music doesn't speak to me. But maybe Deadhead from Royal Albert Hall (youtube), or Kingdom from EMG TV (YouTube - vocals and guitar is live), or his Casualties of Cool side project (link below). I played the Casualties of Cool for my dad who was a Stones/Beatles/Pink Floyd/Bowie guy and he loved it. Chill but haunting. https://youtu.be/FTW0Uf-34BA

Take Des Rocs for a spin. Power trio outta NY with some killer riffs. I've seen them live 4 times now and every time has been exceptional. They're young-ish but they've got that old school rock and roll spirit and swagger and can REALLY play. I'm "only" 57, but they even make me feel young again!

My Dad grew up listening to Zeppelin, Doors, Stones, Hendrix, Zappa, Clapton. He bonded with my sister and I over bands as we grew up. Grunge bands, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains. He also loves Tool, and took me to Metallica. He has more recently bonded with my daughter and I again listening to Great Van Fleet and we saw them in concert a couple years back. If your dad ever Listened to Rush, check out Crown Lands (White Buffalo and Fearless are good albums). Coheed and Cambria are an excellent choice as well, I saw someone mention it.
