I think more research should be done on the power of well targeted ads in a strong communal setting like such. Maybe an undertaking I am willing to do. Either way, I will always keep Listnook in mind for our clients if the right fit comes along.

This is the problem with the numbers-based thinking of old school marketers. A 17 year old black kid and a 40 year old white woman can both hold the same purchasing potential for whatever your product is. Demographics-based marketing is based on vague generalizations. Why do that when you can hit your target market with much more accuracy by looking at their interests and behaviors?
Listnook has the potential to offer this goldmine of information based on what users post, comment, and upvote/downvote. I don't know if the Listnook staff actually has the models to do this, but they are missing out if they don't.
Take for example an outdoor company like REI. They can try to target 18-30 males making $40k+ a year, but they are likely going to be serving ads to a large proportion of people who have no interest. Wasted money. Now take the same company, and have them target users who frequently upvote/comment on stories regarding outdoor activities and display other behaviors that are highly correlated with the outdoors type of person (which can found through some research). Tapping into that community and speaking to them directly (make them feel as if REI is really participating with Listnook) would offer a much higher return on investment.
Smart models are still being developed (you see them with Amazon and Netflix recommendation engine or Pandora's music genome project), but I think there is huge potential in the future and Listnook could be the testing grounds of a model that can be implemented across all community-based sites.

It all depends on the cost per thousand impressions. If Listnook is offering super-reasonable rates (I assume they are) then I could sell a client with an extremely universal marketing campaign. But having no targeting information at all makes it less than desirable for the vast majority of sellers.
I have no idea what targeting capabilities Listnook offers from an administrative standpoint, but like I said, if they are failing to capitalize on the wealth of info available then it's certainly disappointing.
On a personal note: it offers the ability for someone like me (that can find good ways to create qualitative profiles on the user base within sublistnooks) to get well targeted campaigns established at very low costs since I am the one doing the research and having the "inside" knowledge so to speak.

The P*** influence on the VHS vs Beta wars is not exactly accurate. (It even has been completely removed from Wikipedia's page about the format war: [Here is the talk page](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Videotape_format_war#Porn_versus_Sony) ) We learned in my P********** as a film genre class at my university that p*** was on both formats because p*** producers saw no reason to get into a format war. Hollywood saw the advantage of selling pre-recorded tapes after P*** was successful (Before that VHS and Beta was intended for recording TV). And since VHS were 2 hour tapes, and cheaper to produce much more was produced for VHS. Beta lost because it was the weaker format even though it was higher quality. P*** was just the catalyst. eclyman's statement is true though, p*** is usually one of the first adopters of a soon to be successful technology (Though not always, see HD-DVD ).

Why were you on Digg for 3 years knowing the power user dynamic? How could you stay on the site knowing that 99.99% of the top stories were submitted by power users, who were most probably getting paid to submit that stuff?

For my sake, I don't come to either site to submit, I come to read what's posted. In digg's case the power users generally submitted good content (much of it Listnook's) so I didn't care where it came from.

9

Yes, listnook's ads are waaay nicer than what some other sites put up. Whenever a problematic ad appears (never unsafe, i've never seen that; just something bright and flashing or something with sound) the admins quickly handle it (they don't pick the ads, something like google AdSense does). It's a very rare occurrence.

We had one issue a while back, but it was completely unintentional. The ads here are, as a rule, safe. If you ever do have a problem, the admins are extremely quick to react and fix it (as long as you tell them).

I wonder how many of these are going to become permanent listnookors and how long digg is going to live after this.
I'm also glad to hear listnook could handle the extra load. Makes me really happy that my donation was spent on something spend-worthy (and not just beer as would have been the case if I had kept the money). This of course doesn't mean that the listnook-team can't have a beer for my donation money... Heck, have one, you deserve it!

Amazing that listnook handled the load so well. Looks good for the future. Also I'm feeling I'll be donating very soon as well as you did - just to be there when diggers needed it most!
My hunch is digg won't live long after this. IMHO it's way too much damage - the site really sucks now. I love all the features that listnook has.

If listnook were to make available an alternate ad purchase method which had a guaranteed instead of variable CPM (ie, the ability to buy a fixed number of views for a fixed price), might this escape the "auction" issue and let you do international sales? Might be tricky to integrate the fixed impression ad sales with the existing variable ones, but worth it if it let you sell ads to a much wider audience, no?
If the fixed impression ones had to be bought further in advance than the ones sold via the current method, it might not even be that bad to integrate...

Why isn't it possible for the contract to state that any adjudication will be under US jurisdiction? Give them time. The simple interface of listnook keeps newcomers from realizing the depth of listnook at first. I started off small only looking at links off the front page. I then discovered all the wonderful little sublistnooks at the top of the page and my time here went from an hour a week to several hours. The real timekiller was when I discovered the comments! The comments on most web sites are complete garbage. This caused me to ignore listnook's comments for way too long. listnook is one of the few gems where the comments are often better than the original link!
The journey of discovery for the noobs is only beginning. :)

Maybe related, but Kevin Rose isn't the digg CEO anymore, they hired some other guy today.

wow, I didn't believe you!
>During a critical period for Digg, the social news site has named Amazon exec Matt Williams as its new CEO. That's according to TechCrunch, which reports that Digg founder Kevin Rose -- who has served as interim CEO since the ouster of Jay Adelson in April -- will now become "chief architect" of the company. Williams was at Amazon since 1999, most recently as GM of Consumer Payments.

I and several other people from the UK are experiencing outages. I've only just been able to get back on the site after 2 hours of downtime. It was down for most of yesterday evening (GMT) too, in the same way it was down every evening for weeks, about a month or so ago.
When it's down, I get:
"the service you request is temporarily unavailable. please try again later."
This (mostly) only happens when I'm logged in, if I use another browser which I'm not logged in on then I can view the frontpage and default sublistnooks, but clicking any comments or trying any non default sublistnook will give the same message. I get some sort of error 500 when attempting to login in this situation too.
I'm not sure if this is the right place to report this, as after hours of downtime I would've expected to see pages of complaints but see nothing, so I'm assuming it's only affecting a small number of users. Is quite frustrating though.

Yep same here (also UK), there is something else going wrong with the site that not everyone is seeing. There are two bugs open, but no apparent way to add further reports to them other than opening a new bug.
Any other page than the front page fails, this happens about 50% of the time, every day.
3
wmarcelloAug 31, 2010

Exact same situation for me. Some 500 level error plus the "temporarily unavailable" message, usually when logged in but sometimes also when I try to search or navigate past page 3 or 4. The "other browser" fix has been somewhat working for me.

I also experienced some delays and outages (response codes 404 and 502) today morning (Tue, 8/31) at approximately 5AM Eastern (1100UTC). I couldn't post any new links, or comment. And for a brief time, the front page didn't display.

It's called a [mental transaction cost](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mental_accounting). In this case, you're hitting the amusing phenomenon of a mental transaction cost that's higher than the cost of either available choice.
Or, to say it more simply, it's harder to decide whether you want an account than it is to actually get one.

what made me leave digg some four years ago was that there was an 'attitude' in the comments that wasn´t nearly *Nice*. My last time over there I wrote that Eyes Wide Shut was an incomplete work, much as Lang´s Metropolis, and it got lengthy, some four paragraphs. It was downvoted to oblivion, the only reply, and it had a lot of votes, was: "create some blog for your f****** thesis and leave us alone. f*** off."
So I left and joined Listnook.

I left digg because of the new bullshit they pulled with the new update, but I had been getting tired of the users in the comments. It's tiring having people tell you all the time that women belong in the kitchen or to make them a sammich. Yes, it may have been sorta (not really) funny the first time, but after number 1000+ it is freaking annoying and degrading.

I left because I was explaining that I had worked at yahoo writing code that loaded all their clicks and page views into the largest-at-that-time sql-searchable database in the world (it was 10 petabytes when I left) and explained that yes, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies can subpoena data from it and they can get all kinds of information about you actions based on IP and login and history. I then said that (at the time of the posting) I was working at MS as a test automation architect and I happened to be working in the same group that developed the actual internal software used for processing these requests (mostly for child p*** but probably for terrorist stuff too). I was panned by people saying "you're full of shit, you know nothing, it can't be true, too coincidental, blah blah blah". I was there offering useful information and instead of questions or silence I got mockery and stupidity. That was what did it for me.
The stupidest part was people thinking it was too coincidental. I guess 16 year-old kids don't understand that your job history builds your career future.

Digg expat here. When I first came I was turned off by the look but figured I would give it an honest shake. I am leaning towards the simplicity after using the site for day. About the only thing I would suggest is a tiny bit more space below the links of each message. For the record I liked the new look of digg but absolutely despised/hated/etc the garbage content that was being spammed from the same few sites.
What really impresses me is the quality of the discourse. That new user guide was also really helpful. Thank-you to those who worked on it.

>About the only thing I would suggest is a tiny bit more space below the links of each message.
There's a [Greasemonkey script](http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/63628) that makes the comments much more readable.
I also recommend [Live Comment Preview](http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/37566).
There are other scripts that will display downvotes and upvotes for each comment, but they tend to bog down page loads for submissions that have a lot of comments.

Another digg expat here. I really struggled with this site - damn it looked ugly. The front page articles titles can be 4 or 5 lines long and then there's no description text underneath. Why not break it into title and explanation? You could fit more text in the same space and it would look nicer.
But, Digg v4 was so bad that I install a digg firefox theme thingy for listnook, and made an effort. Now I don't even need the theme.
I do like the way I can read replies to my comments.

I'm glad that we have so many newcomers. It'll be interesting to see how the hivemind gets shaken up. I also really appreciate these write-ups. I'm still opening up digg out of habit. I never use bookmarks, but it feels so normal at this point to type in digg.com when I want to not be working. I need to break this habit fast.
The content and comments here are so much better than Digg even prior to v4. And exploring sublistnooks amuse me when the front page slows down. I believe I'll be a permanent convert.

Depends on how they're counting the time spent as well. Most tracking software will ignore the last page of a visit, as there is no easy way of accurately knowing when the user stopped reading that page.
For most non-community sites, about 5 minutes or less is the usual avg. time spent.
