Hi /r/movies, I'm Salomão Abdala, director of 2DIE4, a film shot during the 24 hours of Le Mans. Studio heads deemed it "too risky", and we're now debuting in the biggest IMAX Theaters of the US!

Posted by salomaoabdala

We had this crazy idea, no studio would ever approve, they deemed too risky: *To create a racing film, shot in an actual race, with a real driver* A test to try to make the most authentic racing film ever made, by writing only the intro of the script, and letting the story unfold with the real life events that will happen during the race. One studio heads told me “you have one in a million chance of this working, if he crashes out in the first 10 minutes of the race you have no film”. But there was something inside, driving us in an unsettling pursuit, to make our first film, and somehow, we weren’t scared of this enormous risk, we felt it was time to put everything on the line, to test ourselves. With no studio or streaming to fund the project, we decided to self-fund the project, and go all-in, made some calls and secured Panavision support to the project, who allowed us to have large format cinema cameras and the same lenses Chris Nolan used on Oppenheimer and Tenet (the Panavision Sphero 65 and System 65). Contacted IMAX in the beginning of the project, to introduce the idea to them, they liked it but there was no way to guarantee that this was going to be the first Brazilian movie to be an IMAX Release, but if the film was good enough, there was a tiny chance - this was our green light. Took the next flight to France, on the way to the biggest race in the world, the 24H of LeMans, to film a movie about a Porsche Driver putting his life on the line to achieve the overall victory. \-timejump to 2026-  “**2DIE4**” [trailer](https://youtu.be/wpRyRB0e1VA?si=H-77VoB3T6FXY_p0) has hit over a million views on IMAX YT channel, beating many Hollywood blockbusters, And we’re now releasing it, in April 16th, in the biggest IMAX theaters in North America, including *AMC Lincoln Square, Universal Citywalk, Metreon* and others. A very experimental film that we even tested a new proprietary technique for shooting anamorphic on 1.43:1 IMAX aspect ratio, which has never been done on an IMAX release, now becomes the first Brazilian film to be released in IMAX. I cannot put into words how thankful I’m feeling now, this is just the beginning of a journey. We had some preview screenings and some members of this sub and [r/imax](https://www.listnook.com/r/imax/) already made their reviews [here](https://www.listnook.com/r/movies/comments/1qogwjs/felipe_nasrs_quest_for_le_mans_my_review_of_2die4/) and [here](https://www.listnook.com/r/imax/comments/1ri73tr/2die4_i_attended_the_nyc_premiere_and_it_was/). Hope you guys can catch 2DIE4 in IMAX and would love to hear here what you think of this racing/indie/imax film we’ve created. If you’re interested in watching in theaters, thank you very very much, you’re supporting independent cinema, tickets link is here: [https://www.imax.com/en/us/movie/2die4](https://www.imax.com/en/us/movie/2die4)

YES WE ARE!! We will be making an introduction and Q&A on those sessions: April 16th - (LA) Universal Citywalk | April 17th - tbd | April 18th - (SF) Metreon 16 | April 19th - (NY) Lincoln Square | April 20th - (NY) Lincoln Square |

sukhoi_584th Mar 28, 2026 +3
The only SF Metreon screening I'm seeing is April 16th. Are there supposed to be more? Nothing on the 18th
3
salomaoabdala Mar 28, 2026 +2
This just happened today, due to the enormous (and very well deserved) success of PHM, they’re coming back on IMAX screens in april. Until yesterday, we used to have one session a day 5PM from april 16 til 20th. It seems that some of these sessions were pulled out to give way to one of the 4 sessions Hail Mary will have a day. It is possible to program 4 sessions of PHM and 1 of 2DIE4 a day, (check lincoln square april 18th), just hope enough ppl have interest and get tickets so we can keep our (small) space. I’ve recieved some DMs from several users that have bought tickets to the 17th-20th sessions in Metreon and Universal Citywalk and it seems AMC pulled our sessions and refunded them the money. (They even listed this pulled our sessions in the universal citywalk as “sold out” but they were not)
2
sukhoi_584th Mar 28, 2026 +2
Ah, that's too bad. I just bought seats for the 16th at the Metreon, so hopefully they don't cancel those and send all of us to Dublin!
2
salomaoabdala Mar 28, 2026 +1
Yes, that’s what I’m hoping for, if we get those sessions full, they won’t cancel it. It’s all about demand, we can’t compete with PHM; They’re having their victory lap, and congrats to them, they deserve it. It seems PHM is only coming back in 70mm, so it’s good that we have backup theaters in LA/SF/NY

Farkerisme Mar 28, 2026 +9
Can you share any stories from the race that ended up playing out on screen? I'm curious as to the difficulties the actual racers and team experienced from participating in this absolute gauntlet of a race. How did you get the team that you worked with for the race? Did they have any issues with qualifying? This is a fascinating take on filmmaking, I've got to say. Kudos.
9
salomaoabdala Mar 28, 2026 +15
That’s a great question! One of my favorite stories that ended up on the film is the “tire drama”. Felipe was setting fastest times all around the week on free practices, so qualifying was very much expected for him to be on pole position. During qualy, his car had a malfunction in the hybrid system making him lose more than 1s per lap. So he ended up qualifying in last. On his first stint he is a generational drive, overtaking everyone in front of him, then the rain comes and there’sa big discussion on the radio between pilot and engineer weather to pit for rain tires or not. This decision highly influenced felipe’s position and could or could not put him in the lead of the race in the first 3 hours of the race. To watch this as an audience member, and see driver and team arguing on and off car, is something I never seen in real life and it was pretty cool to document all of this. We as fans of the sport, never get to know what they talk in a closed room, and it was really cool to get this peek at Porsche Motorsport
15
Farkerisme Mar 28, 2026 +3
Thank you so much for this reply!
3
salomaoabdala Mar 28, 2026 +10
The team we were recording is the team with the highest wins in LeMans, Porsche Motorsport. We wanted to get a driver and team that were the “underdogs” at that time but could upset Ferrari to conquer victory, and that team surely was Porsche
10
Farkerisme Mar 28, 2026 +1
Fantastic. Appreciate this. Thank you.
1
Rocknroller658 Mar 28, 2026 +24
Hope this does well, studio heads deeming something too risky is usually a sign it’s a great film
24
salomaoabdala Mar 28, 2026 +11
When we heard that from multiple execs, we knew we got to go do it, as it was the best sign this could be something great haha

navis-svetica Mar 28, 2026 +5
As a motorsport fan and film enthusiast, this is exactly my kind of jam. Felipe Nasr is my favorite underrated F1 driver, such a shame how he ended up getting screwed out of a seat. I’m glad he’s been treated a lot better in IMSA at least
5
salomaoabdala Mar 28, 2026 +1
Yes, Felipe is perfect for this, because he’s super underrated and unknown to many as most of the ppl only keep track of F1. For the storyline and plot of the film, Felipe was the perfect protagonist
1
Platti_J Mar 28, 2026 +3
If the movie does well at the box office, have you thought of a potential sequel? And if so what would it be called? 2DIE42?
3
salomaoabdala Mar 28, 2026 +3
we’re already working on a second project, using the new technique we’ve developed in conjunction with Panavision for 2DIE4 for shooting 1.43:1 IMAX with anamorphic lenses, but his will be the evolution of that technique and it’s going to look out of this world. It’s not a sequel, but if it was, I would call it “2DIE5” cause why not?
3
salomaoabdala Mar 28, 2026 +4
Or maybe “2 DIE 2 FURIOUS” idk at this point

2
This-is_CMGRI Mar 28, 2026 +1
2LIVE4, a story of how a car went from desperatelly needs a fix to starting from pitlane to a harrowing night stint to winning in a final-lap pass, told through the eyes of Robert Kubica

lmao that’s too good hahahahaha
1
Sleep_Fartnea Mar 28, 2026 +3
With 24 hours of racing, and presumably driver backstories, why is the runtime only an hour?
3
salomaoabdala Mar 28, 2026 +12
It’s 24 hours in 1. When we set out to assemble the edit, we decided we wanted to experiment in a lot of areas, one of them was to make a movie without “fillers” and without romantic subplots or unnecessary backstories , and not to forget, using as little exposition as we thought possible, trying not to insult our audience’s intelligence. In the end, the film had 61 minutes, it goes straight to the point, doesn’t hold you longer than it should, and because we tried to make you very tense, like the drivers are, holding that tension for too long and extending the film makes it feel a little boring like it’s not getting to the point.
12
Sleep_Fartnea Mar 28, 2026 +3
Cool, looking forward to it! Definitely wasn't a slight or anything, I miss the old hour long IMAX docs I would see as a kid.
3
salomaoabdala Mar 28, 2026 +2
The ol’ IMAX docs were sick!
2
Scorp1onF1 Mar 28, 2026 +3
Any plans to bring it to Europe?
3
salomaoabdala Mar 28, 2026 +6
Yes, if our North American release is successful, we should bring it to Europe right away. (But that’s a big “if”) There has been some solicitations from Japan and Australia too. (You can solicit the film, if u want too, in our website 2die4film.com )

4
salomaoabdala Mar 28, 2026 +5
we already have some offers from the big three streamings, it’s just a matter of choosing the best home for 2DIE4 now and we’re not taking it rn, it will be at least 4 months after theatrical is done

I'll wait for the Blu-ray! I'm an old fashioned guy

You’re the man! Blu-Ray version with a special colorgrade pushing all the limits of Dolby Vision (from 0 to a 1000nits) and a kickass Dolby Atmos mix is already in the works. (You can check the grade [here](https://youtu.be/0HQqFPhQp8k?si=jk3hJrBXeFLEGYxr) )
1
nickfernandes12 Mar 28, 2026 +2
studios said it was "too risky" we said ok and did it anyway …
2
pigamey Mar 28, 2026 +2
Super great concept, all the best with the release ! Any plans for theatrical release in Europe ? Regarding the film, is it a documentary following the real events or are you adding a fictional layer on top of the race ?
2
salomaoabdala Mar 28, 2026 +3
It’s not a documentary, neither a docu drama. We really played with the concept of mixing genres, documentary and drama/action. Dan Sasaki from Panavision gave a quote after watching it saying that “we invented a new genre”. Everything that you’re seeing on the screen is real, but there are some added layers of fiction, and as the audience you’re in Felipe’s head, hearing his thoughts. Idk if I answered ur question or not
3
pigamey Mar 28, 2026 +2
Interesting, indeed it answers my question. Thanks !
2
No-Record-9998 Mar 28, 2026 +2
Will you guys be doing an IMAX 70MM print release? Or will it just for digital 1.43:1 IMAX screens?
2
salomaoabdala Mar 28, 2026 +1
Unfortunately no. This is an indie film, so we had to choose between many things like: 1.90:1 Master or 1.43:1 Master. And we could only pick one. If we got the chance, yes absolutely I would love to do it.
1
No-Record-9998 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Dang. Mine is the indiana state museum. It takes a imax 70mm print to do the 1.43:1 aspect ratio. Closet digital imax 1.43:1 theatres to me are in Tennessee.

Why does the poster read as 24 Die or Die 24
2
salomaoabdala Mar 28, 2026 +1
The name references 24 hours of LeMans, the race depicted in the movie, and also something you would “die for”

Will it release on south american theaters? Seems promising
2
asw10429 Mar 28, 2026 +2
I’m still sad I couldn’t find times/tickets on Fandango during Rolex24 weekend (I tried my best!). But I got to talk to Filipe about the film, which was neat! Have you talked to him about Sebring yet?
2
salomaoabdala Mar 28, 2026 +2
Yes, we have celebrated that win already. He can’t stop winning so we have to keep adding his victories at the end credits of the film LOL. Are u going to watch this time around? Don’t miss it, If you’re an endurance fan, this film is for you
2
asw10429 Mar 28, 2026 +2
IMSA and WEC are my favorite, plus the Porsche Penske drivers are genuinely awesome people (Kévin’s my favorite, please don’t tell Felipe…), so you don’t need to convince me. If you screen it around the Raleigh-Durham NC area, I’ll be there.
2
salomaoabdala Mar 28, 2026 +2
I won’t tell Felipe abt Kevin hahaha, specially after sebring 😂 what a race that was! (I really like Estre aswel tbc, but I’m team felipe all day) You can check this link to the closest theaters to you https://www.imax.com/en/us/movie/2die4 Or our website makes it easier with a map of theaters https://www.2die4film.com I know we have two theaters in the NC/charlotte area

2

where are u going to watch it?
1
Zassolluto711 Mar 28, 2026 +2
The process and premise reminds me a bit of Steve McQueen’s Le Mans? Have you seen it and if so did it inspire you in any way?
2
salomaoabdala Mar 29, 2026 +2
Yes absolutely. McQueen is a genius and it definitely inspired us a lot. Tbh my favorite one from these times and surely the one that inspired us specifically for the intro of 2DIE4 was “Grand Prix”
2
anonymouswesternguy Mar 29, 2026 +2
Bring it to Velocity Invitational in May get the word out!
2
RMRdesign Mar 29, 2026 +2
Why did the studios think it was too risky? Do people actually die in this movie? Do the cars randomly explode?
2
salomaoabdala Mar 29, 2026 +1
It’s not cause of random deaths no. We have talked to every major studio and streaming about the project, they loved the idea of the “realism” in the film, the aesthetics of following a real life race car driver, the big no-no for them, was the cost and time involved in making this project a reality, versus the high risk of anything happening outside their control. The protagonist could crash out on the first turn of the race, or his car could break down in the first hour, then you have nothing, you have no film. All thrown away in a second. The reality was: our concept of finding the perfect protagonist, and showing his journey was def too risky, you are basically going into production with only the intro of the script being written, and the rest of the script will happen in front of your camera lens, even if the story is great, there’s no guarantee you’re going to capture it, as there are no second takes. And to add it all up, Porsche (the racing team) had given us unprecedented access to everywhere inside their garage where there are many confidential strategies and decisions being taken (which is great), but they had limited our film crew to 8 people only, and this is kind of bonkers, as how could we shoot a racing film, inside a track 8 miles long, with only 8 in the crew. So yeah, basically everyone told us we wouldn’t be able to do it.
1
Funny_Baseball_2431 Mar 28, 2026 +5
How does this compare to F1
5
salomaoabdala Mar 28, 2026 +14
Long answer: Both 2DIE4 & F1 try to achieve the same goal “to create the most authentic racing film ever made”, but the way that we did is 100% different. While F1 took a hollywood actor and taught him how to do laps around the track, set many cameras around the cars, and used a lot of VFX to insert brad pitt’s car in the race, we in the other hand, decided to go to a real race, find a driver who fits our protagonist personality, and taught him some basics about what we wanted from him, basically, Felipe Nasr is playing a “version” of himself, and we’re inside his head listening to his thoughts. So it is a real race, and the script is written as the story happens, in real life. So completely different ways to try to achieve the same goal. F1 is a great film, and I love it, but it’s more hollywood with a standard storyline, 2DIE4 is something more real, were you are going to experience a real team, real drama, real arguments happening in front of you. (Blue pill & red pill lol)

What a weird take. Who said F1 wasn’t a movie? And the plot was super, super basic. I doubt anyone involved in F1 is going to come out and say it reinvented the genre in terms of storyline. Now, I have no skin in this game, and 2DIE4 is such a terrible name for a movie that it initially puts me right off, but good grief, have a drink and chill, my dude/dudette.
2
Goosojuice Mar 28, 2026
Im suoer chill. Sorry if you took it personally, you work on the picture? OP asked how it compares to F1 so i explained,, F1 is and feels like a movie where 2d4 doesn't. It feels like a weak commercial or like im trying to be sold something, it meanders and panders and just isnt shot well at all. The lead is a real racer and this takes place during a real event. The way this is told though doesn't feel exactly like it's a work of fiction/biopic or exactly like its a doc. To your point though, F1 is pretty much a rip off of Days of Thunder. But the movie still knows what it's trying to accomplish and how the story is being told.

1. How big an influence was Truth in 24 to you? 2. If you ever got a call from the likes of Jason Cammisa, Chris Harris or Richard Hammond and said they want a joint docu project, what ideas would you pitch? 3. Definitely rooting for you guys to succeed because this is the kind of movie that's gonna inspire other people to try this. To that end, what do you think about the state of motorsports documentaries and films, and what aspects can use improvement?
