I mean yeah it makes perfect sense that anyone ICE hurt or victimized should be paid back for it. Same goes for any policing really. Don't think this is particularly controversial. If the government beats you or kidnaps your family you should be compensated.

Unless they did the kidnapping a few centuries ago, then held your ancestors in tortuous bondage for subsequent centuries, followed by Jim Crow laws and systemic racism with all it entails.
Then the government sternly scolds you and tells you to forget that, it's the past, while also demanding that you never forget the holocaust that happened side by side with the Jim Crow laws.
No reparations, no apology, no accountability for black people, but ANYONE else...
It's a real mushroom trip.

Your tax dollars go a lot of places you're not a part of. This is a systemic issue that was never addressed in this country. Not our fault that the government didn't do when it was supposed to. Maybe if the government had honored the Special Field Order #15, and then followed up by NOT creating Jim Crow laws designed to oppress black people, we wouldnt be here today, yet here we are.
This is an old debt. If you're gonna blame someone, blame your forefathers for leaving this debt for your tax dollars to pay.

Nobody living in the US today (that I am aware of) owned slaves. They are the only ones who could reasonably be held financially liable.

This is an entirely reasonable series of positions to hold (for-profit detention centers should be destroyed; ICE should be prosecuted for their crimes; those hurt unjustly by ICE deserve compensation).
It's just a terrible way to articulate it. "Trauma" is overused to the point of being practically meaningless. "Reparations" is so heavily associated in the general public's minds with "black folks/slavery" that it is difficult to separate and apply to a new context.

If we can't get reparations after slavery, no shot we manage to get this.
And honestly I think stuff like this does more harm than good to the party. Not because I disagree but because the struggle of democratic politicians is convincing the general public that they aren't pro-illegal immigrant. Despite them pretty much never being so. Its about perception.
20
ScarlettailMar 29, 2026
+2
We can't get compensation for people kidnapped by ICE? Then what's even the point in all this? We're talking about progressives who are pushing to Abolish ICE, as they rightfully should at this stage. Everyone wants Trump and his cronies held accountable, right? Especially those perpetuating these human rights abuses. Naturally part of that will be paying back victims. We all deserve to be paid back if the government abuses us, because this includes not just illegal immigrants but citizens too.
2
zenbowmanMar 29, 2026
+8
The point is to stop ICE from terrorizing people. As CoachDT said, even slavery reparations, which are the most cut and dry justice issue of all, are off the table because of how unpopular they are. So why are we proposing even more unpopular ideas which will hand the GOP victory?
We should focus on undoing the damage Trump has done, which is likely going to take decades. And on reducing our military spending, which is the only thing which will stop the next GOP President from throwing the world into chaos again.
8
ScarlettailMar 29, 2026
+3
This is less controversial than slavery reparations because it's recent and affects people of the present. It's completely the norm for police already to pay out when they are found liable for some incident, as rare as that is. This is just more of that. Law enforcement and government should absolutely be expected to compensate people for violations of their rights or else they're not actually being held accountable.
Yes, we should focus on undoing the damage he's done by paying back those he's harmed.
3
zenbowmanMar 29, 2026
+3
What makes you confident that it is less controversial?
FWIW I think neither of those issues **should be** controversial, but as it stands, they both are.
3
ScarlettailMar 29, 2026
What reason is there that it would be more controversial? My reason is, again, we would all expect to be paid back if the government violated our rights already. And ICE has affected quite a lot of people, including citizens. Slavery reparations deal with past, contentious racial issues which make people uncomfortable for one reason or another, but most Americans dislike ICE, which has targeted people of all races, and I doubt would be bothered if some of its budget went to compensating victims.
0
CoachDTMar 29, 2026
+3
Most American's dislike slavery too. I think its just a non-starter for many people. You'd have a VERY hard time to pair "affordability" as a blanket issue for the democratic platform with reparations.
Especially when you now have to convince the median voter that this isn't the Dems trying to pay off illegal immigrants. We should figure out how to handle immigration, but i'm unsure of how reparations for ICE would even work.
Do the people who were illegal immigrants that legally should be deported get reparations? What about the family members of those people that were left behind here? What about people like myself who got roughed up during protests by ICE agents? I do think we'll see a lot of lawsuits for people who were wrongfully imprisoned by them, but the r-word is a well that's been poisoned. Giving away reparations there will open that door for other groups that America isn't quite ready to handle.
And i'm telling you now, not that i'm king of all black people, but if the democratic party can swing reparations for this black people are going to turn their back on the party. We've pushed for decades for this and have always been told no, so this would be interpreted as a huge slap in the face.
3
ScarlettailMar 29, 2026
+2
The government should pay all of us, at any point, if they kidnap us, kill our family members, or physically abuse us. There's not going to be any way of avoiding lawsuits and payouts for that no matter what. People who lost family members or suffered in ICE camps are going to sue, as they should. It's not acceptable for the government to attack us and then never have to pay for it.
I think you're overthinking this and overstating how much Americans would even notice this. It's perfectly logical that, say, Renee Good's family should be compensated, and I bet the vast majority of Americans would agree. Wrongful deportations should also be amended. It's not really any different than when the Biden admin worked on reuniting families Trump had separated. Grayer situations shouldn't mean we don't deal with the obvious ones.
If we want to call it just compensation instead of reparations, that's fine. It sounds like it's just the word that's the issue here. Just use a different one if that's the case.
2
CoachDTMar 29, 2026
+2
I think if we used a different word for it and just said "hey the people that ICE wrongfully detained will be paid" it'll be call good. Its why I said the r-word is toxic and should be avoided.

0
blazesquallMar 30, 2026
So.. the grand strategy is to just vote blue and then declare victory over whatever scraps eventually fall off the table? You brought up gay marriage, but you're ignoring how that happened. That legal victory didn't occur in a vacuum, and it certainly didn't happen because politicians played it safe. It happened because leftists and activists refused to shut up and relentlessly forced the issue. Plus, to your own admission, it was a legal victory won in the courts.. not a legislative victory handed down by Democrats. Progress requires pressure, not just waiting around for the optics to improve.

She continued, “They need to be brought before us and they need to be held \[to\] account for the trauma that they have created, and we are going to have to have some form of reparation for the kids and the families that have been traumatized through all of this.” -- in context its not so bad. The only reparations that anyone deserves, is seeing MAGA exorcised from all positions of state and federal power.
The other issue is that the instant that you start forking money over to people who have been hurt by the state, the state takes that as a green flag to continue hurting people. Because reparations cause no pain to the politicians doing wrong, as it's the taxpayers that foot the bill.
Strip them of power, and they'll shriek like you are sawing off their right leg with a rusty bread knife.

They can’t get access until congressional majorities change. Or republicans vote with democrats on something like this.
This is what happens when voters give the republicans the presidency and a stream by majority in congress. And it won’t change until they’re voted out.
Be sure to Vote in the midterms.

There should be criminal penalties for people who broke the law, and people who have been harmed have the right to sue. This blanket reparations talk doesn’t make any sense, and I wish my representative would be paying more attention to the real issues, stopping these morons rather than performative acting.

3
jackiefashion24Mar 30, 2026
Sorry.. what? As someone who supported Harris in 2024, what are you talking about? Is opposing genocide bad? It's literally a primary, if it was the general and she endorsed Jill Stein it would be way different. She endorsed Harris after Biden dropped out fyi
And it's crazy that you're telling her to "f*** off" when she's doing something that will greatly benefit immigrants and people impacted negatively by ICE

**Camp Conditions:**
The Trump administration is also spending excessive amounts of money on building what can only be described as concentration camps around the country.
The living conditions at these detention centers are sickening and the federal agents who are tasked with running these camps and supervising inmates operate under little to no oversight.
The goal is to keep these inmates detained for indefinite periods of time, subjecting them to brutality and torture, depriving them of human rights and access to basic necessities; including immigration lawyers, so that they are forced to choose between self deportation or death.
*Dozens* of detainees have died in these wretched hell holes. And that's just what's been reported.
ICE officials can and have undercounted deaths by using what's called the "release before death loophole."
They've even admitted that if a detainee is released immediately before their death, the death is not counted as "in custody."
Whistleblowers have also sounded the alarm about systemic underreporting of deaths, injuries, and violence. They've spoken up about a lack of oversight at these facilities; about the cruelty and negligence on the part of staff, about seriously flawed investigations into these horrors, and about the disgusting, dehumanizing standard of living for detainees.
Previous reviews found that nearly all of these deaths were preventable.
The causes of these deaths can be linked to severe medical neglect, delays in emergency care, preventable infectious diseases as a result of overcrowding and foul living conditions, even suicide due to lack of prevention measures.
Some deaths are attributed to preventable accidents and injuries sustained by detainees going intentionally uncared for.
Detention centers also have severe understaffing issues while inspection records are being falsified. And of course this all comes with next to no accountability.
In some cases, American citizens have been detained at these facilities and have spoken out about the nauseating and derelict conditions that inmates are forced to endure for unknown periods of time.
**"But Trump Is Only Going After 'The Worst Of The Worst!'"**
Trump, ran on a campaign of going after the "criminals" and "the worst of the worst."
His supporters insist this is the case, but it is far from the reality of the situation.
The supreme Court ruled that Kilmar Garcia was unlawfully deported to one of the most dangerous places on earth after an immigration judge expressly forbade his deportation to El Salvador.
Multiple American citizens have been wrongly detained and violently assaulted, even slain at the hands of Trump's lawless, jack-booted ICE thugs.
Data shows that the number of immigrants with criminal records who have been captured or deported is miniscule compared to the number of immigrants who have been detained with no criminal backgrounds.
ICE agents have erroneously targeted and arrested people based on non-gang affiliated tattoos and clothing.
The Trump administration has made separating families and arresting children an *intentional* policy goal.
Homeland security has deported large numbers of migrants with legal status and/or no criminal records to mega prisons while depriving them of their right to due process.
The Trump administration has been conducting illegal mass raids on job sites, targeting laborers, taxpayers, even veterans.
Masked ICE agents were throwing political dissidents and foreign students into unmarked vehicles.
The Trump administration was withholding visas to foreign students and vetting their social media accounts while demanding that universities spy on foreigners enrolled at their schools.
A report came out revealing how Stephen Miller demanded ICE agents start indiscriminately arresting and detaining anyone vaguely perceived as a foreigner in order to meet an excessive deportation quota.
The Trump administration gave immigration agents permission to stop, question and detain people based on their "apparent ethnicity," language or place of work.
ICE continues targeting asylum seekers, green card carriers, visa holders and legal residents.
Trump is mobilizing poorly trained ICE goons to cities around the country where they are escalating violence, violating constitutional norms, suppressing civil rights, and cracking down on protestors.
There have been multiple incidents where federal agents violently arrested elected officials for speaking out during press conferences for DHS.
ICE agents even detained migrants waiting in line at their citizenship ceremony, some who had been working towards their citizenship for decades.
Trump supporters continue to insist that anyone who criticizes these clearly unlawful actions must be a criminal sympathizer.
And if you are a judge or legal authority who has the gall to challenge the unconstitutionality of Trump's actions, you will be intimidated and removed from power, but not before facing violent threats from MAGA yahoos and perhaps the president himself.
**Trump's unlawful "mass deportation agenda**
Polls consistently show that a majority of Americans disapprove of Trump's handling of immigration and ICE's tactics.
Trump's "mass deportation" efforts have done nothing to address the root causes of the "immigration crisis;" including long standing issues related to incompetent border agents, poorly trained ICE officers, a bloated bureaucracy, a dysfunctional immigration court system, judge and staffing shortages, a broken asylum seeking process, diplomatic barriers with other countries, and among other things, the economic costs associated with his policies.
The Trump administration has been reducing the number of immigration judges/attorneys while pressuring others to deny migrants their citizenship and dismiss their cases when they show up to their court hearings, only to have ICE agents waiting for them outside of court to detain and deport them.
Immigration agents are refusing to comply with court orders to release wrongly detained migrants who end up sitting in jail, sometimes for indefinite periods of time while a judge has already ordered their release.
In some cases, these detainees are transferred to other jails or remote detention centers across the country where they have no access to a lawyer, and places where they are forced to endure inhumane living conditions, not even aware that they've been granted release!
Meanwhile, these judges and DOJ/DHS lawyers are being swamped with so many cases that they cannot carry out their duties effectively.
It's gotten so out of hand that DHS attorneys are making headlines.
You might remember Julie Le, who was an ICE attorney who volunteered to work in Minnesota back in January. Records show that she was given 88 cases to work in less than a month.
During one profile hearing, she told the judge:
> "Sometimes I wish you would just hold me in contempt, Your Honor, so that I can have a full 24 hours of sleep. I work days and nights just because people are still in there... The system sucks. This job sucks. And I am trying every breath that I have so that I can get you what you need."
This was in response to the judge demanding to know why ICE agents weren't complying with court orders to release these detainees.
Le also stated:
> "It takes 10 emails to get a release condition to be corrected. It takes two escalations and a threat that I will walk out for that to be corrected."
She also admitted that she was about to resign before realizing that she was one of few attorneys working for DHS who were trying to prevent people from remaining detained even after a judge had ordered their release.
Le was abruptly fired after making her remarks in court. I guess she got the sleep she wanted.
One major problem with our immigration system has been a lack of judges, attorneys and other staff involved in court cases, interviewing migrants and guiding them through the legal system.
A problem that has only gotten worse because Trump is choosing NOT to address these systemic issues.
Instead, him and his allies who are running immigration enforcement and overseeing the immigration courts have focused almost all of their energy on Trump's "mass deportations" and meeting excessive quotas so the White House can brag about numbers rather than fix the inherent problems within our immigration system.

While I agree with her, this isn’t the time. First we need them to take off masks and get warrants. Then we gotta get them to stop killing and beating people. Then we gotta get them to stop kidnapping US citizens and people legally working the process. Then we gotta prosecute those who abused power. Then we can talk reparations. Jumping to this doesn’t help.
