Republicans seem to be dragging out the shutdown—again—just for fun.

I am not joking at all here: if I were a Republican in the House I would be working with my colleagues to orchestrate a couple abrupt resignations and immediate special elections to try to give control of the House to the Dems. It solves a *lot* of their problems. They can vote for every horrible thing Trump wants without risk of it passing so no consequences from him *or* voters and they can start more plausibly blaming government dysfunction on Dems again.

Has nothing to do with having a conscience. This would be a play for them to actually try to salvage the midterms a little and in any case to be able to do their jobs stress-free just voting on whatever stupid shit they know won't pass so it'll never blow back on them.

If he badmouths them on Truth Social that they will lose whatever votes they think they have in the midterms.
That, or he's got some heinous blackmail on them that he'll have released. As far as we know that's what happened with Noem.

They’re going to lose votes in the midterms anyways. Even possibly in deep red territory. Helping ease this airport mess and stop the partial shutdown might help them gain votes but apparently they’re too dumb to realize that.

The Trump admin wants to normalize ICE at airports and privatize TSA, funding TSA… doesn’t do that.
They need more TSA agents to quit, so that they can say “we should let private companies manage this because it causes to many issues and costs too much money…. But ICE has to stay for security”.
So they don’t intend on passing anything related it. They want all TSA to hurt so they will quit.
17
DunderMifflinPaperApr 3, 2026

I went through a major airport today.
First of all, there were douchebros fist bumping the ice agents.
But here’s what’s worse: this is working to make ICE seem favorable to Americans. After all the panic of long TSA lines, you’ve now got ICE waiving people through everywhere and things are moving quickly. I overheard tons of people saying things like “wow, smoothest security I’ve been through” and “oh these ice guys are nothing but nice!”. Then of course there was an icehole loudly proclaiming “we fixed the wait problem!” At the security checkpoint.
They’re sanewashing the organization that has murdered multiple innocent American citizens in the streets, and it’s working.

“…TSA workers still won’t be paid…”
Nor will FEMA, Coast Guard, or CISA workers.
All three of those DHS agencies are there to prevent or directly assist in the event of a disaster or attack - and we are at war against an adversary that has special talent in cyber and terrorist attacks. Let’s pay these people.

A constitutional amendment that would get all money out of politics is popular on both the left and right, but has 0 chance of passing under our current representatives who are bought and paid for by the billionaire oligarchs. We need to primary every one of their corrupt asses.

It only makes sense when you understand that all of this is for an audience of one.
All the GOP reps with half a brain in their heads are resigning, rather than facing the humiliation (and possible death threats) of running as anything other than full MAGA in the midterms. The ones left, well it's a calculation. If they stay good with Trump, maybe they lose, but if they become one of his targets they lose for sure.

They need to move on from the SAVE Act. Thune doesn’t have the balls to nuke the filibuster because he knows they’re cooked. Voter ID is a popular, bipartisan issue but Republicans and some Dems don’t actually want to solve real problems for Americans.

Common-Addendum-4349Apr 2, 2026

2
GatoLibreApr 2, 2026

It doesn’t solve any. It’s a poll tax disguised as a voter suppression bill to address “election fraud”. Election fraud is statistically insignificant and what has been found has been committed by Republicans.

It's hard to fathom that it isn't for anything other than to privatize TSA. There's going to be even more problems because the executive memorandum put TSA workers into active pay status, meaning they have to use their vacation/sick time to cover any time missed instead of utilizing furlough status. That means they have to decide to quit, work without pay and without calling off, or call off and not get paid.
We also know that ICE is in airports and doing some of the work. Not to mention that Homan didn't even commit to pulling ICE after the shutdown is over. Contracted security means you get people in for half the cost and that aren't likely to be a pawn in subsequent spending bills. They already covered funding for their projects as well as for ATC, who were the bigger factor in ending shutdowns quicker. So feasibly, ICE supplements TSA until airports begin to privatize.
Privatizing TSA is in project 2025, so would be another win for them.

Johnson has some far-right congressmen in the House that would pitch a fit if they went for unanimous consent and didn’t bring it to the floor for a vote. They want to be on record for voting against it for their base.
Plus, Trump is going to pass an EO within the next day or so to fund the rest of DHS so he can play hero like he did with TSA. That’ll buy time until they return from recess in a week and a half.

The GOP has refused to participate in good faith debates, in governing, and in putting country over party since Obama took office. They have been going scorched earth with everything ever since. With them, it’s totally zealotry. Right now they’re completely dominated by extreme religious ideology and fascism. None of this is new though, it’s been going this direction since Nixon and Reagan. They’ve had a game plan the whole time and they have been very effective at capitalizing on uncertainty. The Democrats on the other hand have been more or less completely inept at capitalizing on their successes, and as a result also fail to govern effectively. The whole system is in shambles.
