What a joke. The senate bill had much broader bipartisan support. It's as good as it gets in the short term. Johnson decided to keep airports a mess for spring break season.
Jokes on them I guess. Between TSA, the Iran war, and the crippling Trumpflation, Americans are in full-blown recession mindsets. Anecdotally, I know many who have both canceled optional trips (with refunds) and are intentionally are looking to avoid travel next summer.
Are you putting off optional expenses? That's what I'm hearing all around.

Yep. We canceled half of our spring break trip. Would have canceled the other half but our lodging was not refundable.

Absolutely putting off unnecessary purchases. Including non urgent home and car repairs. Just hunkering down and making do. Couple of family members have canceled travel plans. It's like being under siege.

We are doing summer family vacation at a friend’s lake house nearby instead of traveling further and staying at an expensive resort.
I also normally take my own “workation” to spend a few days working on budgeting, bookkeeping, tax prep etc, but instead of getting an Airbnb I’m dogsitting for a neighbor and having my “workation” there (so I make a little money instead of spending money).
We might go camping this summer but will keep it as nearby as possible.
One thing I am doing is spending money to get a new fancy laptop (for my work - I am freelance) before prices get more insane because my 7 year old computer is about to bite the dust. But other than that I’m clamping down on other expenditures, especially since my daughter has a lot of medical bills this year.

Lots of little indicators. I took a motorcycle to a major Ducati dealership for service yesterday. It was… pricey. Nearly 50% more than I expected. That’s not the telling thing though, just Trumpflation. The woman working the desk thanked me for showing up for the appointment! She told me their no shows and cancellations were WAY up, unlike anything she’s seen, but comparable to 2008-2009. People with money for Ducatis are skipping service during their busiest, pre-summer season. In fact… I was there for 2 hours and I can’t remember another customer…

I realize this is all anecdotal, but yes, I put off all optional expenses. I don’t have a single trip by plane scheduled right now. No vacations, no jaunt to Florida in the cold months, nothing. Most of my friends are doing the same. Costs have gone crazy, and will probably get a lot higher.

anecdotal evidence but they are doing heavy trash pickup in my neighborhood this week. It used to be that you couldn't walk down the sidewalk when this goes on because of all the couches, TV sets and other household items stacked up.

So the shutdown smashes the record set in October 2025. TSA officers are supposedly going to get their three missed paychecks by March 30 but there’s been zero talk of pay beyond that. So another missed check is guaranteed at a minimum. and no pay for all of the other DHS employees that are not receiving paychecks. People working for FEMA, CISA, unarmed workers at CBP, BP, civilians at the Coast Guard. But the news doesn’t talk about them.

How many ice agents do you think would be needed to arrest dissidents? Feel free to refer to the Nazis, the Soviet’s, pol pot’s regime and, more recently, China v. Uyghur.
Especially as, like it happened in France during the occupation, local authorities had the power to arrest people who are against the system, other citizens are encouraged to give up their neighbors and a large majority of the country doesn’t give a shit about others (because that won’t happen to them).

There's a difference between killing one and killing hundreds of thousands...if not millions. They don't have the resources for that kind of action. You'd need the army and even our army couldn't occupy this country for long. This is going to end exactly like it did last time.

ICE gets police departments to do their work for them in some states. Here in Florida most departments and highway patrol have signed 287(g) agreements that authorize them to make immigration arrests on behalf of ICE. So while there are 20K official ICE agents. There are many more that fulfill the same role.

Florida's governor SWAT'ed a whistleblower in the morning.
The current president of the United States incited a riot and insurrection as part of an attempted coup.
The current Secretary of Defense published a book where he calls liberals the greatest threat to America and called for using National Guard units from red states to occupy blue states.
Locally, state reps in my area make Holocaust jokes to their Jewish co-reps, and have scared or intimidated some out of politics.
Locally, The Proud Boys have marched here locally against school boards. They are classified as a terrorist organization by Canada and New Zealand, and promote the use of violence.
When people with a history of violence threaten you with violence, don't ignore them. I would love it if everything said, threatened, feared, or proposed was hyperbole. But I also imagine that if the moderates of the Weimar Republic or the Kingdom of Italy could give any pointers, they'd say they wish they took the threat of fascism more seriously.

I have never voted for a Republican in my life, been voting since Obamas first campaign. With that said I keep telling my wife democrats are in a lot of ways worse than Republicans. Republicans are worse for the country full stop no debate, but at least you can say they are doing things that their voting base likes. Democrats do nothing for their voter base they just position themselves in a way that if you have a brain you have no other option but to vote for them.
There is no one on earth happier about how shitty the republicans are than the DNC, they don’t need to run against their donors interests at all they just need to point at trump and say clearly we are the better option.

Senate passed the bill that GOP and Dems compromised on that funded TSA, but not ICE. House refused to vote on that, and instead passed just the original GOP bill that included none of the Dem asks. Dems in the Senate are, predictably, not going to vote for that, so the bill goes nowhere.
