>And Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., warned that if Republicans move ahead with Johnson’s plan, “in the end,” the House GOP would “end up owning this shutdown” Trump already owns the shutdown, and the GOP is complicit by enabling him.

irishnugget Mar 27, 2026 +463
Seriously, they have control of all branches of the government. How could they *not* own this shutdown?!?

Newscast_Now Mar 27, 2026 +151
Probably the same people who will not blame Republicans for the Republican shut down under the Republican government are the ones who got mad at Barack Obama for avoiding a shut down by giving up a few things.
151
throwneverywhichway Mar 27, 2026 +84
They haven't even moved past Obama letting 9/11 happen.

stjohns_jester Mar 27, 2026 +32
When he was told about it, he continued reading a book to kids... *because he knew it was going to happen!!*

That was Bush.

(That's the joke)
67
DevilFixer Mar 28, 2026 +1
It's a seriously dumb joke. Bush had many flaws as a president, but that occurrence wasn't one. He was reading a book to children and was informed of a tragedy that those children couldn't comprehend; he received the information and chose to continue to read to the children instead of causing a panic. Bush was flawed and caused a whole lot of harm globally, but don't you dare say he handled that scenario wrong. That was a level a grace most, certainly not you, will ever attain. Be better.
1
sentripetal Mar 28, 2026 +1
Again. You missed the joke. The joke is that Republicans mistakenly think Obama was the president at the time instead of the Republican W.
1
AnohtosAmerikanos Mar 28, 2026 +1
Hell, they’re blaming Obama for *this* shutdown
1
sinsaint Mar 28, 2026 +1
Well, someone's got to blame for it, damnit!
1
JakeConhale Mar 28, 2026 +1
I mean... if you buy into the idea Trump only ran the first time because of Obama's joke at that Correspondant's Dinner...

Well, he should have been in the White House rather than off whatever he was doing.

Conservative media has entered the chat.

IamnotaCST Mar 28, 2026 +7
Because they can still blame Democrats for not just letting them do whatever they want. Never mind that Republicans refuse to enter negotiations without large consessions when not in power. If Democrats do anything remotely like that they are evil, anti-American demons who hate you and your way of life! If they just give in they are weak, provide no leadership and have nothing to do with the "wins" Republicans get.
7
CNC-Whisperer Mar 27, 2026 +18
I suspect the logic here isnt about who is 'at fault'. Its about understanding when these fights happen and how each coaltion reacts. Realistically, GOP could just ram whatever they want through on a reconciliation bill (like the BBB). But they know doing so would 1) be unpopular among dems and moderates, and 2) not really motivate their base. So instead, GOP is content to work this angle because: 1) GOP can fire their base up claiming dems are the ones stalling. 2) Independents are likely to blame both parties equally instead of looking at the issue on its merits. 3) Reps know Dems eventually cave 100% f****** percent of the time. 4) When (I'm not even saying if) Dems finally capitulate... the dem base gets demoralized and pissed at democratic leadership.
18
BEWMarth Mar 28, 2026 +9
Have you seen Fox News? 100 million Americans have very *creative* ways to assign blame to anyone other than republicans.
9
irishnugget Mar 28, 2026 +3
Yup. My question was rhetorical but I agree.
3
CBheretime Mar 27, 2026 +42
It's all in how you shift the blame. Repubs could be trying pass the 'Blend all puppies into goo' bill beside the budget; and Dems will say, 'Hey now, that's psychotic and insane, so NO." followed by repubs saying "Look how the democrats are holding everything up!" Every damn time.
42
DoomOne Mar 27, 2026 +20
Well, yes, but in this case it's the "Imprison and Kill US Citizens" bill.
20
DebentureThyme Mar 28, 2026 +1
They're going to pass a CR, which will also fund ICE, for 8 weeks. The House doesn't need Dems to pass that. When it gets to the Senate, two things can happen: Dems can hold the line as a block, and the headlines will suddenly decry the Dems refusing to pay TSA and "end" this. Or Dems like Fetterman can cross the aisle to give the GOP the few votes they need for 60, and headlines will proclaim Dems "caved on ICE." This is the spin, and they own most of the mainstream media, they're going to find a way to blame Dems despite them having a majority in neither chamber nor the White House.
1
Pherllerp Mar 27, 2026 +17
They’re full of shit. Any one of them could make a stink and get the Senate bill voted on as is. They’re all in for this shit now.
17
recentgrooves Mar 27, 2026 +6
They’re so deluded, they have each branch of the government in their control, it’s all their fault
6
SumoSoup Mar 28, 2026 +2
Not according to my maga family, its still the f'ing liberals fault.

Disown them and move on. At this point your enabling your own abuse.
2
superanth Mar 28, 2026 +2
Johnson is Trump's henchmen, and Trump already killed a good deal because he doesn't want any deals made with Democrats. What did they expect would happen?
2
xeoron Mar 28, 2026 +1
If it bugs them enough they can force them to get a new speaker
1
VaelinX Mar 28, 2026 +1
They control both houses of Congress, the executive office, and have political operatives placed in the majority of the Supreme Court. They are not some poor underdog; they can *easily* negotiate a plan by simply tapping the brakes and giving a little after already taking (destroying) so much. And yet. They still cannot govern. They are the cuck party. They have everything they ever wanted. They married the rich prom queen cheerleader, and she's in bed waiting, but they have to call the Democrats in to actually f***. Because it was never about governing, it was about looting her daddy's bank account. I understand there is subtlety and nuance to policy making - I live in a small corner of that world. But this isn't about that. This is about them being unable to think and act as adult human beings until they hear what their cult leader/king has to say about it.
1
Ironlion45 Mar 28, 2026 +1
>“We are going to suffer the blame” for the DHS shutdown, Barrett said, according to the source. “We are going to be the ones to blame even if it isn’t our fault.” And yet somehow, they are unable to see it. They're so scared about getting reelected that that's *all* they care about. Not even governing. Just keeping their worthless jobs. I don't know how you fix it when it's this broken.
1
Ratermelon Mar 27, 2026 +74
F****** hilarious. I love it. The article doesn't mention whether Congress is still planning on going on their unearned vacation today.
74

You bet they are going on their vacation. Don't you know how hard they work. /s

How are they going to get back to Washington when inevitably only 20% of TSA will be staffing airports by mid April
6
Throwawayaccountdell Mar 27, 2026 +324
Republicans are starting to worry with all the disastrous decisions they are making. They have very low approval ratings across many different issues. The best way we can make change is to vote them out in the midterms later this year and in the special elections.
324
Danzarr Mar 27, 2026 +105
they don't care, they're baking on losing and then blaming it all on dems in 5-6 years
105
Throwawayaccountdell Mar 27, 2026 +78
The democrats really need to work on their messaging to make sure voters know that everything that is going bad such as the economy is because of republicans. Then when the democrats win actually make meaningful changes and polices.
78
civil_politician Mar 27, 2026 +87
Has nothing to do with dem messaging and everything to do with the 6 remaining media companies that have illegally been allowed to violate antitrust laws to combine and solely represent their billionaire corpo owners.
87
Ok-Lets-Talk-It-Out Mar 27, 2026 +22
I agree but here's the thing, the entire reason trump and the GOP have pushed calling things "fake news" is to undercut the truth. You can show all the facts you want, but the majority of Republicans will refuse to accept it and instead claim it's the media trying to hurt trump. Unfortunately most Americans not even just Republicans suck at staying informed.
22
centexgoodguy Mar 27, 2026 +17
Not nearly that simple, and therein lies the the rub. Because of the dominate conservative media, busting through with that message to the people who need to hear it is damn near impossible.
17
toddsmagicock Mar 27, 2026 +4
It’s impossible because they don’t want to hear it, you could spend six hours spelling out facts with video evidence and all they’ll do is just get angry. The issue is they are angry with themselves but they’ll never admit to being so blind and blatantly stupid. They dig their heels in because they already cast three ballots over the past eight years for the same turd. No one ever wants to admit they supported literal shit and they just will not. That’s why it’s going to be a fight every single f****** time. Sunk-cost-fallacy, the lines are in the sand and we’re all currently picking sides
4
_Phil_McCracken_ Mar 28, 2026 +3
Dem messaging never reaches conservatives. They are insulated by a right-wing disinformation/propaganda media ecosystem.

1
SMWW66 Mar 28, 2026 +5
They’re banking on blaming Democrats **FOR** 5-6 years. Johnson may lose the majority by November with all the reps retiring/dying
5
WeAlmostAlwaysAlmost Mar 28, 2026 +2
I am not too concerned about them stealing the midterms because I think for a lot of them they would be relieved to not have the power/blame anymore (especially since they aren’t actually using it), and they can go back to campaigning on getting the democrats out of power. It’s a win-win.
2
Viperlite Mar 28, 2026 +1
You notice JD Vance is kind of disappearing backwards into the bushes.
1
The_Lost_Jedi Mar 27, 2026 +5
They shouldn't worry about how bad it is now - just wait til Trump sends US troops on the ground into Iran!

Worth noting they have the ability to override the speaker. They just won't because it means sticking their head out and getting attacked by Trump for the good of the country.

You f****** love to see it. Republicans finally realizing that they suffer consequences for being obstructionists. They cannot lose enough seats this midterms. I would not mind if there were less than 100 republicans in the house.

Spineless Mike Johnson, feckless in every sense of the word. This guy will go down as one of the worst leaders of the house since Kevin McCarthy.
