How a Turkish Period Drama Conquered 70+ Countries: The Global Phenomenon of "Magnificent Century"

Posted by psikotrexion

Hi everyone! Most people talk about *Squid Game* or *Money Heist* when it comes to non-English hits, but before them, there was **Magnificent Century** (Muhteşem Yüzyıl). It’s officially the second most exported TV series in the world after US productions. I’ve put together a deep-dive "Pillar Guide" for anyone curious about why this show became such a massive cultural earthquake. It covers the complex plot, the high production values, the iconic cast, and the real historical locations in Istanbul. If you're looking for a "Game of Thrones" style political intrigue set in the 16th-century Ottoman Empire, this is the definitive starting point. **Full Guide & Analysis here:** [https://www.turkishvibe.com/series/magnificent-century/](https://www.turkishvibe.com/series/magnificent-century/) Have you encountered this show in your country? I’m curious about its impact outside of Turkey!

It's a good show if you look at it as more loosely inspired by history, because it heavily romanticizes the harem system, and ensures not to mention certain topics surrounding the sultans and their various allies and enemies. Of course, this is due to Turkish censorship regarding these topics. That being said, Hürrem Sultan is a pretty interesting figure to see brought to life on screen. I remember the show being stupidly popular on tumblr for a while.

My wife loves this show. She’s watched it probably 20+ times. I’ve been in Istanbul to where the main castle area scenes were filmed off. Some of the rooms were kept the same and your not allowed to go into certain rooms or areas but you can look and take a photo, it was really neat

What’s the chronological order of all these Turkish dramas? Ertugul first?

Never heard of it but now I'm curious 🔥 the ottoman empire setting sounds way more interesting than another generic medieval european thing I work on cars all day so when I get home I need something that'll actually grab my attention and keep me awake. might give this a shot since you compared it to GoT before it went to hell 💀

Bro, no. This is a Brazilian soap opera in Turkish clothes, not game of thrones lol

Just watch the new PBS Masterpiece Count of Monte Cristo with Sam Claflin instead of this Turkish soap opera fluff.
