i had started liking someone else so i knew it was time to go. i waited a little while (too long it was about a month) while i mulled it over and kept trying to get over it/work thru it. but no matter what i just didn’t want to be with my ex anymore and i felt horrible but i broke up with him in my car one day after driving him home from school

Just told him we were through. It was surprisingly anticlimactic considering all the prior trauma between us.

Had a similar thing happen when I was 25. kept thinking we'd invested too much time to just walk away, you know? But my buddy pointed out that staying in something broken just because you've already put years into it is like continuing to drive a car with no brakes - the longer you stay, the worse the crash is gonna be.
Took me another 6 months to actually pull the trigger but looking back, those 6 months were just delaying the inevitable. Sometimes there gut knows before your brain catches up, and once I stopped overthinking every little detail it became pretty clear what needed to happen.

I realized the opposite of love was indifference and I was indifferent AF.

I stopped giving a f*** and let her walk out. Life got much better afterwards
