How do people move cities

Posted by Warmasssoup19

I live in LA currently and theres a job in OC that seems perfect that I’ve passed the first interview. I’ve looked at places and the one that fits the best the Landlord wants 3 months shown of stable income, and the job requirement for the one I’m looking at wants me to live in OC to work in person. I really want to move out of LA and I built up the savings living with my parents and my current job pays far too low to afford a place where I’m at currently. But basically I can’t find a place because I don’t have a high paying job and I don’t have a high paying job because I don’t have a place where the high paying job is located

When I moved from London to Los Angeles, I just came to rent a room from somebody with a house or apartment so I had room mates for quite a long time. Some of them were great ! I moved different homes and stayed in different places until I knew which place I really liked and then I bought a place later on after that.

Roommates to get you there is probably your best option. A family member and I moved from east coast to Nashville. My family member was able to transfer their employment to a Nashville branch. I had to quit and get a new job but my offer letter in addition to 3 months of pay stubs showing regular income from my previous job was accepted by the rental company we initially rented from.

You could stay in an extended stay hotel while you find a permanent home. Or speak to the company you will be working for and ask them if they know of any short term rentals or have any suggestions for you.

I’m not hired by them yet, I dont want to say I don’t live in the area because I still need to pass the 2nd interview and they might not hire me lol. I think my plan is secure the job and figure out the rest after and I’ll probably just sleep in my car some nights idk

Short stay hotel or Airbnb or room for rent monthly until you have enough check stubs showing proof of income. A letter from your parents that you paid xxx rent consistently for xx months / years would help as well. Also offering to prepay 3 or 6 months rent might work.

Hah! Just from the post title alone, my mind immediately raced to ...evacuating a whole city full of people, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and what the city of Pripyat had to go through. But otherwise, yeah, you're in a pickle. Good luck.

First off, you don’t have the job yet so looking to get a place is a bit too early of a step.  Second, idk where in LA you are, but if you get this job you could possibly still live there for a bit instead of jumping right to moving. You’d be doing a reverse commute generally. But this isn’t worth it if you’re like in Ktown trying to get to Irvine or something wild. But a consideration nonetheless.  Third, once you are ready to move, consider roommates if you want to save. OC can be pricey too.  Fourth, this move is easy if you were to get the job. You just kinda like… move? I literally just did the opposite, moved from Santa Ana to Atwater for a job. You find a job, pack your stuff in a U-Haul or a car, and just move. Or you buy more things once you get to your place you’ll move to. If you think this OC move is long term and you’ll be at the spot you move to for a bit, don’t forget to update the postal service and all the other legal documents, but if it’s a shorter term move or you think you won’t be at the OC spot more than a year, keep you families LA address, makes it easier than each time changing things.  Fifth, there are other subs you can ask questions on. Relocating, OC sub or some OC cities have pages, movingtolosangeles can maybe help with logistics or something.  And sixth, good luck with the job process and the move. Hope you get it! OC is pretty different than LA in many ways. Pretty quiet in most places, more spread out, things close earlier, harder to connect with new friends imo, generally family focused, basically… suburbia.

Oh and I would just add traffic in OC is bad but not LA bad so you can once you move there pick a more fun place to live instead of moving as close as possible to your job. Use google map estimates is helpful but yeah traffic ain’t as wild as LA but still has a rush hour

A really decent job will give you some money to cover relocation expenses. Otherwise you need to fund the move yourself either with debt or savings. And as you say if you move out from your parents place your cost of living will rise. And on net you may not make more. OC I assume is orange country? So you will still be in California under a lot of the same rules and taxes.  People move for more favorable economic conditions, often out of state where there are different taxes, cost of housing, etc. You might find you have more left at the end of the month in another state entirely. But you gotta go where you can get a job I suppose

Will the landlord take a co-signer and will your parents co-sign?

if you want the secure adult way you'd have to make sure the new job in the new city pays enough. if it doesn't you don't accept it. but you're doing the wise thing by looking at costs of living and requirements to life there. Tbh tho that 3 months of income isn't all the rentals. keep hunting.

Usually an offer letter will do for the income proof

Room mates, hotel or Airbnb as a temporary fix whilst you're building up the savings and proof to get your ideal place. You could try negotiating with landlords to provide a bigger deposit or something but this depending on what is typical in the area you're moving to.

Every place I’ve moved to was okay with taking my offer letter at proof of employment. So wait until you get the job and just give them that.
