How do TV series rent places given that they work for months for several episodes? How do they even credit directors for each episode?

they rent places with money, like anyone else. If a studio came to me and offered to rent my house for six months for $$$$ I would probably happily move into temporary housing. they also shoot mostly on sets. each episode is shot separately and typically has a different director, so it’s easy to give credit to that episodes director

If its for months its not a regular home or place, studios can built sets that look like the real deal to be there for many weeks / months. If it's a real place, its rented and all the scenes of the season are filmed in few days/weeks to don't overspend, if you see an special place on Episode 1, then on 5 and then in the final 12 Episode, it was probably rented for about 5 days to get all the footage needed for the season, and if the action happens inside that said place, they film the exterior in few days, then they fake the interior in an studio or a cheaper location.

Production usually has a location scout that will scout out the area for places to film. Sometimes they only use the exterior of a house (they may not even film there just show the outdoor like The Brady Bunch, Friends, etc did). Often they will only film exterior scenes on site and the crew will build rooms (sometimes interconnected rooms like an actual building) on a soundstage to film everything else. If it’s a vacant house they just rent it out and decorate it how they want for filming. If it’s a house someone lives in occupants are usually put up in a hotel or temp rental while filming occurs (I believe they ask you to remove any personal photos and they will just move your furniture to an unused room while filming on their chosen furniture). For businesses they will typically rent a vacant building. (The original Scrubs series was filmed in a closed down hospital). For active businesses they will sometimes film after hours or ask the business to close temporarily if possible.

Often they will only film exterior scenes on site A great example of this is the mansion from The Prince of Bel Air which was only filmed for external shots. In fact, you can tell when Jazz is about to get thrown out of the house because he'll always be seen wearing the same outfit since they only filmed the external shot once.

They basically sign short-term leases, often paying above normal rent, and block-schedule scenes. Directors are hired per episode, so each one gets their own on-screen credit under guild rules.

>How do they even credit directors for each episode? By giving them credit for the episode they directed?!

Depends on the TV Series but many of them build sets for production. In early seasons of Breaking Bad, Jessie’s house was an on location shoot but they later built a identical set in later seasons so they didn’t have to shoot on location. Generally a TV series has a smaller footprint than a big Hollywood movie. Most TV sets have writers & producers around to make sure nothing is changed that affects continuity in other episodes. Many TV seasons will have directors work on multiple episodes so they are working in blocks

Watch ‘The House From’ on Tubi. It features a lot of houses used on tv and movies and their owners, including Jessie’s house on Breaking Bad. Interesting!

Some do, some buy the property, and some build sets. It can be all three. A lot of insides are on sets, especially if reoccurring. They have more control on a built set because they can control lighting even more meticulously, and place the camera almost anywhere. Imagine your room, but they they can move a wall out of the way to put the camera and dolly track.
