I be seeing these concepts float around but I am not sure what they mean. ideas like " alignment, enlightenment, authenticity, true self, higher self ", I can't really understand. I mean, to know there is a true self you can become, is to have experienced it or to already be it. Otherwise you are choosing to become something,/ someone, just like everyone else. How do you choose to become something which you aren't and you don't know what it is ?
When I use the word " know" I mean it. I don't mean know as in " I read it from a book... " I mean now as in " I have experienced / embraced / felt it "
honestly, it's a journey, not a destination. just try different things and see what feels right, trust your gut and reflect on what resonates with you the most.

Well, the end goal as I see it towards being your "true self" is having a lack of cognitive dissonance. Aka being completely cognitively consonant in everything you do; actions align with thoughts, and even _more_ so, actions and thoughts align with subconscious thoughts.
Because how much more true can you get, than not lying to yourself, and being exactly the person your brain is primed for?
I feel like stuff like enlightenment focuses way too much on the spiritually existential side of things. Breathing in and slowing down... You realise your thoughts are like rooms. And then you know, by extension, that what you think (and how you think) innately shapes your very consciousness. And your subconscious reacts to that in very subtle signs.
Getting to know them signs is one of the very first, and very crucial, steps imo.

You can reason who you are based on your own actions, decisions and how that made you feel in hindsight, coupled with contemplating many of life's aspects from all angles until you firmly understand what your take is. This includes not just dismissing something because you *think* you already know the answer, but rather deeply understanding not only what makes you uncomfortable, but also why they make you uncomfortable.
Like, I've done this for most of my life, I'm soon 50. I've also taken all the big personality tests several times over and discussed a myriad of decisions and thoughts I've had in relation to life events etc. with AI, where it's been shown that I've been remarkably consisten and in line with my personality type. When things align and there is a red line stretching through your life for these aspects, you can be fairly certain of who you are.
