How scary is Midnight Mass?

Posted by laxusdreyarligh

Hey guys, I found this show and it looks interesting, but I don't really like jumpscares, Is this show really scary with a lot of jumpscares, or is it more like Supernatural or Evil, where jumpscares aren't that prevalent and it feels more like a thriller than a horror show?

It's the most philosophical of his series. Less scares and more slowburn dread and existential horrors. I think you might like it since you don't enjoy jumpscares.

Yeah the horror is in realizing what’s happening, not a monster popping out and going “blaaargh!”

ProfionWiz 5 days ago +28
Its the most personal of his series (because of his catholic background)
28
cap_crunch121 5 days ago +13
I know his Catholic background influenced the show, but that lead to my one nitpick. There is no way anyone who grew up Catholic would think a huge parish potluck picnic would take place on Ash Wednesday

lmao you're right it would be fat Tuesday if anything

100% this. I hate 99% of horror due to its reliance on jumpscares. This has basically no jumpscares.
36
clabog 5 days ago +8
There’s definitely one good jump scare in this that got me good. But yeah overall, more of a slow burn horror
8
Direct-Astronaut8080 4 days ago
Suggesting 99% of horror "relies on jumpscares" is wildly insulting and deeply wrong.

> more slowburn dread and existential horrors. I believe I got to the second to last episode where the church service started, and the second I realized what was about to happen I had to turn the show off for like a week. I can’t think of another show or movie that had that kind of effect on me. Damn good show and honestly brilliant writing.

It's been a while since I've watched it but I don't remember there being any jump scares. Mike Flanagan in general seems to shy away from them and rely more on the storytelling and ambience to sell the spookiness. Definitely recommend it based on what you wrote here.

I remember at least ONE jumpscare.

itsthe_implication_ 5 days ago -17
If you're talking about Haunting of Hill House then yes I know the one. It's a great jumpscare though! And I honestly think it's the only one in the whole show and it's so deserved in the storyline at the time that I would still recommend that show to OP if they like Mike Flanagan stuff. Edit: yooo my bad guys it's been awhile since I watched the shows I clearly forgot some jumpscares D:

There's one at the church as well, right before the big twist of the show. But it doesn't compare to the Hill House car one lol

I think it works so well because the show spends like 8 epsidoes NOT using jump scares. Lulls you into a false sense of security then finally hits you.
3
Kaldricus 5 days ago +3
I jumped so high off the couch, paused the episode, and just started laughing afterwards. It's so out of left field, and should be cheesy, but it's so well executed.
3
Fadedcamo 2 days ago +1
I think becasue the jump scare serves the characters in the show the same as the audience who feels it. The scare is a huge shift in conversation and breaking through the argument between the sisters and denial of what's happening. It snaps the characters out of their argument with a shock the same as we, the audience feel that shock.

I saw someone with a bumper sticker the other day that said “I’d rather be watching the jump scare from episode 8 of Mike Flanagan’s iconic horror series Haunting of Hill House” 😂

That is a hilariously wordy and specific bumper sticker and I would have gotten a huge kick out of that.

Doesn’t he have the jumpscare record in midnight club?
13
LordXenu45 5 days ago +41
Yes. Netflix told him he needed more jump scares so his response was do a scene that's just one jump scare after another to show how dumb they can be. Its actually quite comical lol
41
Bardmedicine 5 days ago +12
Agree\^2. He doesn't lean into jumpscares and MM is his masterpiece. Hamish Linklater is the best performance of small-town preacher I have ever seen.

House of usher had some big horror set pieces with gore but yeah he’s more spooky human stories mostly

There were definitely some jump scares in the haunting of hill house.
3

Yeah there are a couple of massive jump scares in Hill House. One in particular that I won't spoil but it's possibly the most a jump scare has ever made me jump.
4

Yeah, that one almost gave me a heart attack.
5
FlyUnder_TheRadar 5 days ago +3
There a decent number of jump scares in Hill House if I remember correctly. But, yeah, not many in Midnight Mass. Weirdly enough, my wife isnt a big horror person. Jump scares used to really freak her out. But, we watched Hill House together and I kind of used it to teach her what kind of cues usually signal when a jump scare is coming. Now she does much better with them lmao.
3
itsthe_implication_ 5 days ago +1
Haha nice. Yeah I haven't watched those shows since they came out so I'm sure I'm forgetting something but I don't associate Mike Flanagan with jump scares usually. Certainly not like Insidious or the Conjuring.
1
Taurnil91 5 days ago +2
There are at least two pretty big jump scares in MM. He doesn't rely on them, but they're still there.
2
stilichouw 5 days ago +1
There’s for sure at least two. A window scene and the community center
1
crimson_teacup 5 days ago +74
It’s more slow-burn, existential dread than constant jumpscares. A few well-placed ones, but nothing like a c**** haunted house. Try episode 1 with the lights on and see if the vibe clicks.

It's one of the best horror series out there. Has some disturbing scenes. I don't remember it really leaning on jump scares
30
kranitoko 5 days ago +10
So I don't think it's "scary scary". Whilst Mike is an expert at horror, I think this one was more about trying to give a sense of utter dread. You already "know" what religious horror can be like, and so the show builds up on those feelings. It's making you care about the characters first before the show decides to challenge those same characters. It's a show to make you "think" before the horror aspects.

I don’t remember any jump scares but the (I think) penultimate episode of the show has one of the most jaw droppingly haunting things I’ve ever seen and it still gives me chills when I think about it.
8
crasherdgrate 5 days ago +25
It’s one of the best things Netflix has put out. It’s a slow existential thing, with discussion/debates against religious/cult miracles. There are some handful of jumpscares, but the series does not overly rely on it solely. Recently rewatched it during Lent/easter/Ramadan. It’s amazing. A must watch.
25
epicmemetime15 5 days ago +6
I'm a huge horror wimp and have never had an issue with any of Flanagan's series. Haunting of Hill House is another must watch alongside Midnight Mass

hill house has some pretty jarring jump scares. house of usher might be better for op
1
redfm8 5 days ago +6
There definitely are multiple jumpscares in the show. I don’t think it’s particularly heavy on them, but there are enough that come to mind just off the top of my head that I’m kind of surprised there are people saying they don’t remember any and such. In fairness though that does speak to what many are echoing which is that it’s not ultimately the point of the show and not the main kind of horror, obviously the jumpscares didn’t leave much of an impression on them.

F****** incredible show, I can't recommend this more. Very story and character driven. It's a definite slow burn, in the best way, and well worth it.
3

One of my favorite shows. I found it terrifying but in a Stephen King “people are scarier than the supernatural” way
3
Ozzdo 5 days ago +3
An underlying sense of dread is scarier to me than any jumpscare, and Midnight Mass does that incredibly well.
3
D-Ursuul 5 days ago +2
There's a handful of jump scares across the whole series but I wouldn't say it relies on them
2
EnvironmentalShift25 5 days ago +2
The last 2 episodes, especially the penultimate one, are horrific for sure. A slow burn before that.
2
JaJuPhi 5 days ago +2
Not so much when you finally see the monster. But at the start, the idea that there is one made the jumpscare and fear real.
2
HardSteelRain 5 days ago +2
I don't remember any jump scares but it is a fascinating watch..one of the rare horror films where the dialogue scenes are as good as the horror
2
_SCHULTZY_ 5 days ago +2
I hate the horror genre and don't even enjoy trailers to horror movies. I've watched Midnight Mass several times. It's brilliantly well done.  I wouldn't call it a thriller. Much more of a dark drama. It's really really good though and you should watch it
2
CrispyCozy 5 days ago +2
There’s definitely a FEW jump scares.. but probably like less than five over the course of ten episodes. It’s a really beautiful allegory on grief, religion, faith, forgiveness, and redemption, and is easily one of my favorite shows. It’s creepy. I went in blind and would suggest you do the same if you watch. It’s kinda comparable to other Flanagan series in terms of scariness.
2
uniballout 5 days ago +2
Less scare. Lots and lots and lots and lots of monologues. Like a lot.
2
ExigentCalm 5 days ago +2
There are a couple jump scares, but they’re more spooky than scary. Like a character sees something in the bushes, and then a figure you couldn’t quite discern moves suddenly. I love midnight mass. It has some of the best conversations about existence and death I’ve ever seen in film. I’ve watched it a half dozen times at least and it’s permanently in my October rotation
2
jcaarow 5 days ago +2

Not super scary but also not exactly a thriller. Either way, it's definitely worth a watch.
2
Clenzor 5 days ago +2
As others have said, there aren’t many jump scares across the 8 episodes, but there will be some. The 2¢ I wanted to add was that it will be worth it. The show is art in every way possible. The acting, cinematography, writing, directing, music are all top notch and it explores a lot of profound aspects of what it means to be good, the soul, and death. Riley is one of my favorite protagonists ever. Just enjoy and open yourself up to the emotions you will feel while watching. If you enjoy it, The Haunting of Hill House is in a similar vein. If they weren’t horror shows I’d be shocked they hadn’t won Emmy’s.

Midnight Mass was great, I believe you’re probably referring to the trailer, still the best for a TV show I’ve ever seen. The actual show deals more with philosophical ideals, though there is a twist. I also love the premise of the show taking place on a small island. AppleTV is releasing a show this week with that same premise named Widow’s Bay and it has Matthew Rhys, who is great.

May I recommend WheresTheJump ? If you search there you can get an idea of how many, size and time codes of the jumpscares.
2
Rocktopops 5 days ago +2
One of my all time favourite shows. Very few Juno scares and more of a slow burn horror, but honestly it's less scary than his other shows and not too bad overall. It's phenomenal as an examination of religion and religious trauma. Was really blown away by it
2
R0B0138 5 days ago +2
I would describe it as creepy rather than scary.
2
AffectionateKey7126 5 days ago +2

2
Abridged6251 5 days ago +2
Hope you like monologues seemingly every 10 minutes
2
charlie_ferrous 5 days ago +2
It’s a horror story, so it does horror things, but definitely it isn’t as much about that, even relative to other Mike Flanagan projects. It’s much more creepy and atmospheric than full of jump scares. And its point is more to explore themes of belief and religious fervor than to be specifically scary. Way more of a commentary on Christian fundamentalism than anything else. It’s also great. One of the best things he’s made.
2
MostlyPotStickers 5 days ago +2
If you fear long winded monologues and being beat over the head with overt symbolism, I’d definitely avoid it.
2

I really liked it. The performance by Hamish Linklater is worth watching, at the very least. It’s my favorite of Flanagan.

It’s more of a Hereditary vibe . Slow burn with some horror elements . If you’ve watched Mike Flanagans previous work it’s like Haunting of Hill House.

I don’t think it was mentioned, but Flanagan loves to use dead cats. Not scary, but can be very upsetting.

From what I recall the dead cats in Midnight Mass looked pretty fake, so that softens the blow somewhat. Could still be conceptually upsetting though.

It's more moody scary than jump scares. I think there's maybe one late on but by then you kind of know to expect the plot element that provides them.
1

It's more psychological horror - the supernatural stuff only exists to affirm and highlight the existing human problems.
1
apple_kicks 5 days ago +1
Its more horror stage drama. Expect it to get creepy, small town community drama, monster dilemma, catholic guilt, and philosophical monologues Directors does do few visuals for horror and i think some junoscares but doesn’t lean heavily on them but i remember more hating that one mean woman more

Midnight Mass has one really bad Jumpscare I think early on in the first episode involving police siren/lights if I remember correctly. Otherwise I remember it being atmosphere, unsettling imagery and stuff. Really excellent show.

Not scary at all
1
Ok-Tumbleweed-5008 5 days ago +1
It's one of the best character driven features I have watched that just so happens to be rooted in slow horror. A combination that grabs you and doesn't let go. Also even if you are not religious the soundtrack is like a haunting weekly trip to the church.

1
Ch4p3l 5 days ago +1
Not really scary, I think just one reoccurring small jump scare you get used to. Very philosophical and dense in atmosphere. Not his best work and a bit of a weak ending but everything leading up to it is well worth your time it a It’s a great way to start and get into Flanagan!

I too hate jumpscares, there are from memory about 3 of them, with one of them being particularly bad, and the other two i'm including if you're very sensitive to them. You should still watch the show.

There are a few times when there's proper horror, but for the most part it's a growing sense of dread and pretty regular sadness.
1
Faithless195 5 days ago +1
There's only two big jump scares that I remember, both being at the ends of episode 4 and 5. But they are absolutely earned, and not that 'bad' on the general scale of jump scares. I genuinely can't remember if there were any more from the show, if it was just those two?

I also don’t like jump scares. Flanagan absolutely does not rely on them and it’s way more about tension. Having said that it seems instead of loading up a full show with jump scares he might do 1, mayyyybe 2 a season, and it’s so good that it’s worth it. Flanagan made me appreciate a good solid jump scare way more. It’s fun because he doesn’t abuse it

Midnight Mass is EXCELLENT!!! there are maybe a couple of jump-ish scares here and there but overall it's NOT jump scare heavy. the series has tremendous atmosphere/dread/etc. rather than rely on c**** jump scares (thankfully!). it's my favorite Mike Flanigan project and is just a great series in it's own right! this is a perfect companion/un-related show to watch after watching >!SALEM'S LOT!< (original version) and the prequel (unofficial? official?) >!CHAPELWAITE!< (starring Adrien Brody) which was fantastic as well! there's a death sequence/scene in Midnight Mass >!involving 2 characters on a small boat/row boat!< that is brilliant imo in the way the it unfolds and the way we are watching the character die...it's both horrific and HEARTBREAKING times 100.
