Unfortunately, they often beach themselves when they are ill and going to die.

Maybe it wants to die? Whales are a mystery.

He freed himself already. But chances are high he will die eventually because he is in bad shape.😔

Someone nearby potentially using sonar driving the whale to shore.

Possible indication of a submarine in the area

GrouchyMary9132 Mar 29, 2026 +1
There are probably always submarines in that area. But this part of the Baltic sea is not made for whales to live. It has to much sweet water and is to shallow. The skin of the whale is already full of nasty bumps and some of them are bleeding because he really needs to find his way back into the more salty atlantic. Although he has freed himself again his chances to survive are pretty grim. It really is hard to watch.

i wouldnt be surprised if this was as a result of increased submarine activity in the area.

Maybe he is hurt and confused by human noise or sonar.

dudes just trying to evolve into a dinosaur but we keep throwing it back into the water

vreemdevince Mar 29, 2026 +5
Last time they left the water they regretted it and went back. Definitely not going to be better this time around.

Whales do be whaling. Let's not think of ecology.

TonyTheTerrible Mar 28, 2026 +2
Something something ... Natural selection Nah but don't they sometimes do this when ill anyway?
2
Probable_Bot1236 Mar 28, 2026 +13
Yeah, plus according to the article the Baltic doesn't have proper nutrition nor a high enough salinity for it to survive long. That said, I don't really mind some whale rescue efforts since we screw with them so much with ship traffic and sonar; maybe he got spooked into the shallows by a vessel. But it's not looking so great for this particular individual. At least humpbacks aren't endangered (as a whole species) anymore. I certainly like watching them when I'm on the water.

It would be artificial selection given the anthropogenic conditions that have been imposed upon the whale. There is nothing “natural” about the world we have created.

Can they use tug boats and tow it by the tail back out to sea ? Tug boats are immensely powerful for their size

Natural selection here. It would be selected if we didnt help it.
-11
soulstormfire Mar 29, 2026 +9
Only if you consider sonar and human pollution "natural".
9
thehermit14 Mar 29, 2026 -4
By whom? I guess it's natural for people to recognise stuff we did as "natural '.
